A typical dayThis is not guaranteed but this is what typically happens duringthe day on the trip.

• Breakfast– 07:30• Language Class – 08:30 – 12:00• Lunch• Cultural activity/project work 14:00 – 18:00• Dinner• Evening – Tours / free time / practice rehearsals•This may change depending on a number of factors such as Chinesehost visits, some trips and activities and on the wellbeing of thegroup43

Climate / Weather

• Hot and humid – average temperatures in July – 26 – 33 C

• Hence light comfortable clothes – shorts / t shirts etc• But beware of hot sun – sun cream, clothes to cover up for

protection, mosquito repellent, hat, sunglasses etc• Could have thunderstorms• Maybe cooler by the coast?

What to bring • Cameras, memory cards, chargers• A towel as one will not be provided• A 2 pin Asian to English plug adapter to allow you to plug in electrical items• All aspects of the trip are paid for• It is recommended that approximately £100 of spending money is needed for gifts, snacks, souvenirs etc. (Pounds, Dollars for airports?)• Some photos of family and friends to show hosts • Have this money in RMB before travelling.46

Luggage Allowance

• Hold luggage – no more than 20kg • (you must be able to carry it yourself up stairs)• Cabin bag – rucksack for use on daily basis - 55 x 38 x 20cm (22 x 15 x 8 inches) - no more than 7kg

Not too much luggage – share – you don’t need three hairdryers in your room! 47

Gifts

• To give to host families / Chinese students• Something very British, small, eg fridge magnets, small ornaments,

postcards or pictures of local area, book about local area, gifts from local tourist office such as pencils, tea towels. This need not be expensive. It is the gesture that is important

• Must be light and not take up too much room in suitcase.

Health• Importance of adequate sleep - Jet lag may be an issue • Drink enough water to keep hydrated• Only drink bottled water – also for cleaning teeth.• Eat sensibly – not just chips and chocolate• Hygiene – wash hands before eating• Don’t touch any stray dogs• Cover up in the sun• Comfortable footwear• Don’t forget your inhalers if you need them.• Don’t be afraid to ask if you are worried about anything. • First aid kit will be taken but also access to medical help in China if

need be.49

Keeping Safe – basic rules• Listen to all instructions• Be on time – make sure your phone or watch has correct time• Never go anywhere by yourself – only in threes• Be alert – keep up with the group and watch out for head counts.• Look after your own belongings and check that you have everything

on a regular basis

• Medical Assistance will be provided on campus and several local hospitals are a few minutes away.

• Teachers – first aiders available – plenty of English speaking staff

Keeping safe – further points to note• Very organised visit with Hanban representatives looking after

groups at all times• Several school groups working together at all times – ie two teachers

for each school group of 9 – 10 students• All activities are ‘close supervision’, few opportunities for remote

supervision. (about 2 hours after dinner every evening)• Remote supervision in confined areas, ie airport departures lounge,

Accommodation in University. Basic rules apply.• Secure campus with security guards.• All students to be given ID cards and emergency contact cards• Rooms with keys• Transport to all visits by organised, air conditioned coaches.51

Closing Ceremony

• Students to work in groups to prepare for closing ceremony on return to Beijing.

• Rehearsals during free time in Provinces.• All props and costumes will be provided• Work collaboratively with other schools• Very important part of the study camp for Hanban• Dress – something a bit smarter than just shorts and t-shirts• Bring cameras

Behaviour• Same expectations as in school• Code of conduct to be signed• Respect for our hosts at all times• Remember manners

• Students should also be prepared to be - flexible - patient - resilient - willing to participate - go with the flow when plans change - always have a go at new experiences and keep an open mind!54

Communications

Make sure mobile phones have international roaming enabledand work in China -

• remember that China is 8 hours ahead

• Internet access may be sporadic within the two universitycampuses but will be available during certain times. Wi-Fimay be available in certain places on campus.
