CPP 3203 – Pharmacy Practice Experience I

52 hours in a simulated environment

One 4-hour day per week for 13 weeks

CPP 5203 – Pharmacy Practice Experience II

260 hours (longitudinal; begins summer/fall of 4th year and must be completed by May of 4th year)

CPP 5203 – Pharmacy Practice Experience II

What will I be doing on rotation?

• A workbook containing the course description, learning objectives, assignments, attendance form, etc. will be posted on RxPreceptor under the Support Library link.

• Your preceptor and site will determine your specific responsibilities each day.

IPPE Course Description

• Build upon Experiential Pharmacy I, transitioning and developing skills of the student to become a more active participant of the healthcare delivery system in both the institutional and community setting.

• The goals include developing professionalism and applying the knowledge and skills gained thus far to the provision of patient care

• The student, under the supervision of pharmacy preceptors from affiliated practice sites, will actively become involved in:

Preparing prescriptions for dispensing

Utilizing and evaluating the patient medication profile

Participating in quality assurance activities

Actively developing patient counseling skills

All aspects of medication therapy management

Health Clearance

• Instructions are posted on RxPreceptor

• EXPIRES 1 year from date of your last physical or TB test

• If you demonstrated immunity in past, do NOT repeat titers!

• MMR, HEP B, Varicella, PPD/Quantiferon/Chest X-Ray

• Sign and submit “Student Authorization Form”

• Hand deliver clearance papers to the Student Health Office

• Once the Student Health Office clears you, your health packet will be sent to the Office of Experiential Education. Your forms will be scanned and emailed to you. You MUST upload your scanned pdf to RxPreceptor. This completes the health clearance process.

• The Office of Experiential Education will post your health clearance expiration date

• You MUST have a pharmacy intern permit to start CPP 5203

• You must be within 6 credits of completing your 3rd year to be eligible

• Complete your application ASAP!!

• Failure to do so will delay your progression to CPP 5203

CPP 5203 – Placement and Scheduling

What site will I be going to?

You will rank your preferences

Ms. Murray will place you in one community site and in one institution site according to your preferences (as best as possible)

How will I know what site I am assigned to?

The name of the site, preceptor and dates of your rotation will be posted on RxPreceptor

You will receive an email through RxPreceptor when your schedule is posted

CPP 5203 – Placement and Scheduling

What do I have to do when I receive my site

assignment?

• Look at the start and end dates of the rotation

• You must contact your preceptor at least one week prior to the start of your rotation

• You must post a tentative 130-hr schedule as per discussion with your preceptor on RxPreceptor within 1 week of the start date. You can change these dates later if needed.

• There is flexibility in the schedule you design with your preceptor as long as the hours are completed between the START and END dates!

CPP 5203 - Attendance

• Attendance is MANDATORY

• Lateness and unexcused absences will NOT be tolerated

Preceptor and the Office of Experiential Education must be contacted before you are expected to arrive at your site on the day of the absence

You are responsible to promptly re-work a new schedule with your preceptor and ensure this is reflected on RxPreceptor.

• Attendance (every hour!) and grades must be documented on RxPreceptor

• When documenting hours on RxPreceptor, student must document the total number of hours daily, indicate exact start time and end time in the comments section

CPP 5203 – Grading

• You will receive a midpoint evaluation and a final grade for each community and institution

Midpoints are to be completed at the halfway mark (e.g.: after you complete ~60 hours)

Final grades are to be submitted, preferably on RxPreceptor at the end of the community and institution rotations

• In order to achieve a passing grade for the experience, you must “meet expectations” in all categories and in both practice settings.

Contacting Your Preceptor

• All preceptors must be contacted via email (preferred) and telephone (if applicable) at least one (1) week prior to the start of the rotation to allow time for development of schedule.

• Politely and clearly introduce yourself to your preceptor.

• Send a follow-up email one week prior to starting to remind your preceptor of your start date and confirm when and where you are expected on your first day.

• All telephone numbers, email addresses, preceptor name(s) are provided to you via RXpreceptor.

• When emailing your preceptor, your email should be professionally written.

• In the subject line, leave a brief but good description of the contents of your email or else your email will be deleted!

• Address the person you are emailing appropriately!

• Leave space between headers or paragraphs

• Write your full legal name at the bottom of your email with any other information you think they would need to be able to answer your email (i.e. telephone number, dates you will be completing your rotation)

• Do NOT use slang or text messaging abbreviations!

• All patient information (written, electronic, verbal) must be kept confidential at all times.

• Patient information cannot be discussed in public places (cafeteria, elevator, etc).

• All corporate, business, and contractual information you are exposed to must be kept confidential.

Criteria for Student Removal from Site

Any professional misconduct on behalf of the student

• Expired Health Clearance

• Presenting to the site under the influence

• Theft of the site’s goods, confidential information, and/or services.

• Unexcused absences/tardiness

• Unethical behavior and/or conducting illegal activity at the site

• Insubordination or harassment towards preceptor, staff, or other site personnel

• Misrepresentation of site placement

Student will be removed from the site resulting in a failing grade

Serious misconduct will be forwarded to the Dean for review and disciplinary

action
