by Professor Nadia Thalmann.
The robot has been set up as a
receptionist, where it welcomes guests
by smiling, shaking their hands and
putting them at ease with a friendly
chat.
Developers used research and
technology from areas such as
engineering, computer science,
linguistics and psychology in order to
create a ‘virtual human’.

Experts believe that these lifelike
robots could soon provide
companionship and care for the lonely
and elderly.
Professor Nadia Thalmann said: “As
countries worldwide face challenges of
an aging population, social robots can
be one solution to address the
shrinking workforce, become personal
companions for children and the elderly
at home, and even serve as a platform
for healthcare services in future.”
