Giovanni Civardi’s Complete Guide to Drawing (Art of Drawing) Giovanni CivardiPaperback: 376 pages Publisher: Search Press; Illustrated edition Civardi has authored a number of really good books on specific elements of figure drawing. This one islarger and more complete volumes. All are great to study from.

The Figure in Motion Thomas EasleyPaperback: 176 pages Publisher: Watson-Guptill This is not an anatomy book, but rather a “figure reference” which is to say, photographs of nude modelsin dynamic positions for illustrators to use as reference. There are many figure references on the market, but this was one of the first.

Artistic AnatomyDr. Paul RicherPaperback: 256 pages Publisher: Watson-Guptill; 35 Rep Anv editionAn incredibly detailed guide to anatomy from the late 19th century. A good one to own if you’ve gottenvery serious about anatomy. Richer was a medical anatomist who actually discovered certain anatomicalfeatures of the human body (ie: Richer’s bands).

Anatomy Lessons from the Great MastersRobert Hale & Terrence CoylePaperback: 272 pages Publisher: Watson-Guptill Hale was another luminary from the creaky halls of the Art Student’s League. He taught for manydecades, and authored and edited a number of good books, particularly several that explored the techniques of the masters.

The Illustrations from the Works of Andreas Vesalius of Brussels J. B. deC. M. SaundersPaperback: 255 pages Publisher: Dover Publications An amazing book of anatomy from the 16th century. The illustrations are unbeleivably detailed and accurate for their time, principally depicting “ecorche” (flayed figures) in dynamic, life like poses. Great for the aspiring medical student and zombie movie fan alike.

Albinus on Anatomy Ed. Robert Beverly HalePaperback: 208 pages Publisher: Dover PublicationsAn 18th century update to Vesalius’ classic. Once again, flayed figures going about their daily grind. Very accurate and detailed.
