Casta Paintings

Spanish American Colonies

Casta is a 17th century term used in Spanish America, and refers to the institutionalized system of racial and social stratification and segregation based on a person's heritage.

Certain labels were used to identify classes of people with specific racial or ethnic heritage. Each of these castes was entitled to privileges or were restricted within the society because of its caste.

1450-1750

Page 23: Intro empires & encounters 1450-1750

As these empires were built:

• The rulers worked to control ethnic &

religious groups in ways that utilized

their economic contributions while

limiting their ability to challenge the

authority of the government

• Mughal treatment of Hindu subjects

• Chinese treatment of SE Asian merchants

• European promotion of the African slave trade

Page 24: Intro empires & encounters 1450-1750

• Governments of these empires used

bureaucrats and professional military

to maintain centralized control over

people & resources – (and limit the

power of the other nobles).

• Ottoman devshirme system & janissaries

• Chinese scholar officials

• European use of merchants or priests as

bureaucrats.
