A soldier’s Lament

Then tell me, tell me as I see,The sights that are too much for me,

A soldier gone, his head was torn,

In brutal rhapsody.

Then tell me, tell me as I weepTo which God I might pray,

And how shall I forgive himFor the happenstance today.

What God is this who will allowGrown men to prey on men,In bloody sport and violence,

Again and yet again?

O Lord which language should I use,To then a send a prayer to you?Because I know they’ll kill again, No matter what I do.

When did we let you down (1)

When did we let you down?

Was it in the womb?

When you were but a circle

Or perhaps a square,

Not quite real, not quite there.

Was it then?

When did we let you down?

Was it when you sprang forth?

From a bee that quivered

Then broke from the hive,

Not quite living, not quite alive.

Was it then?

When did we let you down?

Was it with our eyes?

Glassy mute mirrors,

Of perishing sighs,

And petty seamless lies?

Was it then?

Or did we let you down,

With our silken silence

Wrought in lusty leers,

And mildewed musk poured

In wretched oily smears?

Was it then?

With the emptying, desiccating,

Unwrapping of you,

From the Sacred Feminine

Of Infinity and Wisdom

To a defiled woman -

Was it then?

The Night cried

The night leapt from its golden prison

To smudge kohl streaks on my walls,

Five hundred shades of black and gray,

Two aging whites, that’s all.

It spiralled, grew, then shrunk,

Into its flaccid yellow death,

Swathed in sounds I could not hear;

A gauze wrapped every breath.

Then day broke out, a fiery red,

And spread its blinding tine,

O’er dribbling dreams and fuzzy scenes

And mortal lives like mine.

Between me and myself

Between me and myself

There lies the shadow of the other -

Not yet quite here, not yet quite there;

Just a nebulous unformed mass

Of fluffy clouds and sandy storms;

Of weeping willows, graveyard calm;

Of expanding questions, abrupt colons,

Unfinished sentences, hasty semi -colons -

And a seething silence that inflates

A black blind night that has no periods;

And a day that burns each excavated interior

With its blazing white light and deep yellow flames;

Till all that remains between me and myself

Is the other - not quite born, not quite dead –

Just nebulous, just unexplained. - NK.

Do you mind? (8)

So tell me my dear,When the night stands between us,Like a mirror in an empty room,

Eating phantom sketches And charcoal thoughts,

Not quite in tune.Do you mind?

So tell me, my dear,When the silence bleeds between usIn pink and reddish huesRipe with swollen questionsThat rise in single file

Then quickly fall in twos.Do you mind?

So tell me, my dear,When the door that lies between us,Unkempt, ungreased and aging,Creaks in squeaks and starts,Like a squalid exclamation

And tears the night apart.Do you mind? – NK
