• Why am I interviewing this person?• It’s not to sell records• It’s not to become buddies with them• It’s not to show off my vast knowledge• It’s not about me• It’s not a joke• So why do we interview artists?

Communication- The InterviewCommunication- The InterviewWhy do we interview artists?• The songs are the most powerful communication

tool we have• The audience will listen to the songs more

closely when they have a relationship with the artist

• The closer the audience feels to the artist, the closer they will feel to the radio station

• The purpose of the interview is to build a relationship between the artist, the listener and the radio station.

sing Happy Birthday…• Is it cool partying every night?• What are you guys going to do next?

this is what you wanted to do?• On the days you look in the mirror and feel like a poser,

what do you do to get through it?• Your old friend from Tulsa is on the line, let’s ask them

what their favorite thing about you is.• Your new single is about [insert cause], why is that such

an important topic?• What’s the greatest reward in doing what you do? What is

the worst part?

When preparing your questions, you should think of the needs of your core listeners. If they could sit down and talk with the artist, what would they ask? If they met one of the new artists you’re playing, what would they want to know about them? Would they really want to know the release date of their debut or where they recorded their album? Would a teenager really ask an artist who produced their CD or what label they’re on?

How often has your opinion of an artist changed after seeing them in concert, meeting them personally or hearing their "story"? This is the purpose of the interview: To show the artist to your listeners as a real person, a friend and not just another product someone’s trying to sell them.

Great Interviewers:Great Interviewers:• Know it’s not about them• Are immaculately prepared• Ask the right questions• Let the audience ask questions• Shine the spotlight on the artist• Don’t waste the artist’s time• Know how to listen (Larry King)• Know lots of talking and laughs do not equal a great

interview. They give the artist space to open up.• Anticipates (Dead air, remember Chris farley interviews)• Takes the first exit when a an artist says something great• Doesn’t follow formulas (word association)• Makes their interviews memorable
