Dear Friends,

I am excited to share with you about an opportunity that is before us.InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is a ministry that has been on colleges anduniversity campuses since 1941. This year, we are planting InterVarsity atMurray State University. We are very excited to be back at our alma materand planting a ministry that we believe can help develop leadership and theChristian faith among students and faculty.

Every university is vibrantly different from one another and each changeswith each passing season. We took time to be on campus and talk withfaculty and students to know the current needs of the university. We havedeveloped a model of ministry that will not only meet the current needs in abrand new way, but will also compliment the current ministries that arealready established on campus.

Instead of having a building or house with a weekly large group gathering,we are planting missional small groups in various areas of campus. We arestarting with three initially and then will start a new small group eachsemester following our first year. Our first three focuses include agriculturestudents, nursing students, and students with disabilities.

On the following pages you will get an overview of our current work as wellas insight into what our future goals are in the next five years with ourstrategic plan. We are on a campus we know and love and we are tacklingboth short term and long term goals at once to ensure a fruitful ministry formany years to come that shape students to be world changers wherever theymay end up. The best way to understand a new community or culture is tovisit it and immerse yourself into it, so we invite you to come and visitanytime of the year, to walk the campus with us, get a cup of coffee with acouple of students, and pray for some faulty members with us. Join us intransforming students and faculty, renewing the campus, and developingworld changers at Murray State.

- Patrick Wallce

Why Agriculture?

As we began exploring where to beginour ministry at Murray State, one areaof campus that stood out very clearly wasthe School of Agriculture. Take a quickglance at the campus map and you willnotice there is a significant amount ofreal estate devoted solely for studentsstudying agriculture. If the universityis that interested in the field, we shouldas well. I met with the associate dean of theHutson School of Agriculture in earlyJanuary 2013. Not only was he andseveral faculty members alreadyinterested in getting a small group upand going in the Agriculture department, the faculty have tried a number of BibleStudies before. The main reason for the Bible Studiesnot being successful was not a lack ofinterest in students, but more of a timecommitment in the faculty leading thestudies. As we plant this new smallgroup, we are going to make it moreaccessible to the students' schedules. Another important piece that I learnedfrom our meeting, was that the studentsin the School of Agriculture are veryservice oriented. In the past they havehosted a rodeo for children with specialneeds and have helped with landscapingat one of the local nursing homes. Thiswas valuable information for us. Weare grateful for the enthusiasm that thefaculty and staff have shown as we beginour work among their students.

Page 7: InterVarsity at Murray State University

AgricultureThe Plan

Most students whoare studying in theSchool of Agricultureenjoy learning in avery hands-on and active environment. Therefore, we are designingthis small group to be very active. Each week may look completelydifferent each week. Two pieces that will remain constant are prayerand studying Scripture. However, how we do those will be a littledifferent than how the other small groups will be structured. Since the students in the department are service oriented, we wantto partner with local nonprofit organizations to help clean and helpspruce up the landscaping. While we all pitch in and work during theshort service project, we'll discuss some of the Scripture that will beour focus for the week. At the end of our time, we will gathertogether, debrief the significance of the service project, and digestsome of the scripture we are studying. Each week, we will devotea large portion of our time to prayer. Praying for the nonprofit thatwe are serving, and praying for community members or evenstudents who utilize the nonprofit. We believe structuring the Agriculture Small Group in this way willbe exciting for students. Agriculture plays a significant part of oursociety in a number of ways. Some of the students we work with willhelp feed the hungry, educate our children, will help care for creation, help hurting animals, and much more. We are excited for studentsto graduate after theyhave been a part ofInterVarsity to makea difference in theircommunity and knowhow they can make adifference in a verytangible way simplyby serving, praying, and continuing theirstudy of Scripture.

Nursing

The Plan

The Nursing SmallGroup will need to look abit different from the restbecause their schedulesare not nearly as flexiblegiven their responsibilitieswithin the program. We'llmeet during their lunchhour on Tuesdays for BibleStudy, prayer, and a timefor them to process some of the things they have experienced duringthe week. We believe setting aside time for them to process through and talkabout what it was like to care for a patient who just found out theyhave cancer or changing the bandages of someone who may not beable to walk again. The realities of life hit each student differently butit's important for them to have a safe place to come and wrap theirminds around what they've experienced. Another aspect to the small group will be discussing practical ideason how to find a church community when you might have to workevery other weekend or several weekends in a row. Figuring out aplan while the students are in college will prepare them for after theygraduate. A lot of what we will be studying in our Bible Study portionwill be looking at how Jesus healed others and how He cared for them. There were many times when Jesus would go off by Himself just to berefilled and renewed. Prayer will be a focal point in our time together and will help tobring everything together for us each week. We will spend time inprayer for other students, faculty members, and situations that theyhave faced during the week with patients. There is a large correlation when students pray together and their spiritual growth as both individuals and as a community. Nurses serve us in many ways that we often don't think of and we are excited to spend time serving them.

Classes for Bachelorsof Nursing include:

- Human Anatomy- Human Physiology- Nursing Assessment- Mental Health Nursing- Nursing Research-Pharmacology- Child Rearing- Nursing Care Adults- Psychiatric Nursing- Health Care Delivery- Community Health- Nursing Leadership- Nutrition

The School of Nursing hasgrown from their first BSN

class in1964 to offeringtheir first Doctorate ofNursing Practice in the

Fall of 2012.

Why Nursing?

The School of Nursing at Murray State is the only department on campus to offer a doctorate degree. It is a very reputable program that students walk away from campus with a job waiting for them as they walk the line to receive their diploma. Our personal experience withnurses has helped shape our thoughts ofwho a nurse is and the care they give eachday. There are very few professions otherthan nursing, that you care for peoplethat are at a vulnerable point in theirlives. Every day, nurses have to processhealing, life, death, and hope. The pressure nursing students face isunlike any other department on campus.Failing two classes is enough to be out ofthe program automatically. Besides classlectures and labs, there is training in anactual nursing setting such as hospitals, doctor's offices, and more. In the finalsemester, students have a practicum thatevaluates if they are ready for graduation. Beyond the university setting, thereare new pressures nurses currently face.Bullying is something that is entering theworld of nursing. The schedule of a nurseis also an adjustment that nurses mustadapt to quickly. With all of the newchallenges graduates face, their faith caneasily be an afterthought at times. Wewant to work with nursing students tohelp them find a faith community to be apart of and discuss some of the pressuresthey face.

The Plan

Students who are a part of the SDS office have a number of opportunities to be successfulacademically during their time at Murray State. We are partneringwith the SDS office to be another opportunity for these students to besuccessful and to help them grow in their faith. The SDS Small group will be very individualized to meet the needsof each student who wants to be a part of it. We will have large printversions of the Scripture passage we are studying, discussionquestions already printed out for students who have trouble hearing, and most gatherings we will act out the Scripture whenever we canso we all learn together. We want to offer a setting that students arefamiliar and comfortable with, so we will meet in one of the SDSclassrooms. After we have Bible Study, we'll offer some type of gathering wherestudents can get to know each other to build community. We maywalk to Dairy Queen or go to a Racer basketball game together.Building community and getting the students more involved sociallyon campus not only helps with retention, but helps students learnhow to develop relationships and community beyond their collegeyears. A need we are working diligently to helpmeet is to provide a network of volunteers togive these students rides to doctor'sappointments, the pharmacy, or the grocery. Some of these students drive, but there is asignificant number of students who rely onothers to help get them where they need tobe. What better way to show students wecare for them? We are thrilled to be able to start this smallgroup at Murray State. It is a population oncampus that most churches rarely reach outto and there is a lot we can learn from them.

Students withDisabilities

Page 11: InterVarsity at Murray State University

Why Students withDisabilities? Student Disability Services (SDS) is anoffice at Murray State that providesresources and accommodations tostudents who have any type of disability. As we were exploring what was neededon campus, we came face to face with thereality that students with disabilitieswere a population on campus that noother ministry was pursuing. Our son, Asher, has Down Syndromeso we naturally look for opportunitiesthat he has in the future. The studentswho are part of the SDS office are not allthat different from Asher's journey. These students are able to break througha disability that can easily hold themback. They are equipped to study, learn, and apply what is taught in the classroomto the journey after college. We want to come alongside thesestudents to encourage them, pray withthem, and to teach them that God hasgifted them and has a purpose for them. They are future leaders, doctors, teachers, artists, engineers, and even ministers. They are eager to change the world and make a difference for those who follow in their footseps.

Strategic Plan Balancing ongoing work with the small groups we already havegoing and developing new relationships to plant new small groups isnot an easy task at times. But, we believe that if we put the two piecestogether strategically with a plan in place, they will work together tocreate a place of growth, rather than running the well dry. By being involved on campus and knowing what events are comingup with students, faculty, and in the community, we are able to makenew connections and build relationships that we have established. We have also made it a priority to know faculty members well and toshare our work with them. There are many faculty members outsideof our current small groups who are watching our work and areinterested in getting a small group up and going in their area ofcampus as well. We have identified several new areas of campus that we arebeginning to develop new relationships with to be able to plant newsmall groups. We are excited for the years to come! There are manyareas of campus that need light in dark places. By having a strategicplan, we are able to focus on what is next. Every two to three years,we will reevaluate our strategic plan, as student life on campus is aconstant change. Three years from now will look different fromtoday. Developing these new small groups will take time, energy, andresources. It would be easier and much more comfortable to stickwith the areas of campus where we already have small groups. But,we are here to reach out to Murray State University as a whole, andnot just part of the campus.

We invite you to join us, dream with us and challenge us to reach new areas of campus we never thought about going before.

Page 13: InterVarsity at Murray State University

Areas we are working to develop new small groups:Marching BandThe Racer Band has over 300 members each year. They practice mostnights and often have things on the weekends. Most weeks, Sundaymorning is the only break they get. Many students choose to rest.Art DepartmentMany of these students stay late throughout the week finishing upprojects. It's a very isolated department where they only know otherart students since that's where they spend the majority of their time.College of EducationMurray State is well known for it's College of Education. Each year, they produce some of the best teachers in the state. We want to comealongside them, encourage them, and also to equip them with how togrow in their faith as educators.Residential CollegesEvery member of Murray State from students to faculty and staff aremembers of one of eight Residential Colleges. Most freshmen live oncampus and it is also the place where most students build community. It's also a place of great need, as students struggle with brokenrelationships, eating disorders, and loneliness just to name a few.Multicultural CenterInterVarsity is a strong multiethnic ministry and it is a natural fit forus to partner with the Multicultural Center on campus. Murray Statestill struggles with issues of race and identity, and we can bring aChristian perspective to the table.Student AthletesThere are very few other student populations that are as busy asstudent athletes. Between practicing, playing, going to class, andstudying, there isn't much time that's left in the day for them.College of BusinessTomorrow's leaders are today's innovators. We want to challengestudents to think about business differently related to the needs of theworld. There are many thriving businesses that do a lot of good andwe want them to learn from them.Regional CampusesTo our knowledge, no other campus ministry is reaching out tostudents at Murray State's Regional Campuses. This is a demographicof students that is significantly different than that of the main campusand the needs of students may look different as well.

Need for FundingWhy We Raise Financial SupportRaising financial support can seem overwhelming at times. But as God callsour family to serve college students, we trust in His provision. We havealready seen God's hand at work as we have met our budget many times inthe past. Many people have already partnered with us monthly, quarterly, and annually to help make our ministry possible.

From time to time we are asked about the significance of raising our ownfunding. There are a number of ways we could reach the funding we needsuch as writing a grant or having a part time job to cover the cost we need. These ways of generating funding is very time consuming but also competeswith our focus with college students. Instead, InterVarsity is set up for us topartner with our family and friends in ministry.

The partnerships we have with our supporters encourage us in our workand enable us to be connected with a network of people who pray for us andcare for us. In return, we update our supporters throughout the year andpray for them regularly.

10I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concernfor me. Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity toshow it. 11I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to becontent whatever the circumstances. 12I know what it is to be in need, and Iknow what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content inany and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plentyor in want. 13I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

14Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15Moreover, as youPhilippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matterof giving and receiving, except you only; 16for even when I was inThessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I was in need. 17Notthat I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to youraccount. 18I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are afragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19And my God willmeet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

20To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
