Internet of ThingsWhere the Web and the physical world meet.

Seminar by,Nirnay M Banagar

Introduction• The term Internet of Things was first coined by Kevin Ashton

in 1999 in the context of supply chain management.• IoT is defined as- physical and virtual objects that have unique

identities and are connected to the internet to facilitate intelligent applications that make energy, logistics, industrial control, retail, agriculture and many other domains "smarter".

•Dynamic and Self-Adapting

•Self Configuring

•Interoperable Communication

•Unique Identity

•Integrated in Information Network

Characteristics of IoT

What do we use mobile for?•Call•Message•Manage Calendar•Music•Watch Videos•Play Games•Read books•Social Media (Facebook, Twitter……)

What can it be used for?

•Search things (vehicle key, house key…..)•Monitor things (heartbeat, pets movement)•Manage things•Control things (home appliances) •Find a parking spot in the market•Know your vehicle’s condition•Find your friends/family members in a Mall, crowded place

The Tile App•Attach tile to an object•Track the object using mobile•If tile is lost, notify as “lost “to the tile Community any user passing by sends the location to the user mobile.

Advantages & Disadvantages of IoTAdvantages Disadvantages

Automation leads to better monitoring of devices.

Loss of privacy and security.

Efficient and saves time. Compatibility.

Saves money. Complexity.

Better quality of life. Lesser employment of staff.

Technology takes control of life.

Case Study Goldcorp’s Éléonore: Internet of Things Enables the

Mine of the Future Today.

Business Challenge: Safeguard Workers, Maximize Efficiency.

a) Remote and rugged landscape of northern Canada, like a lonely

city

b) More than 1,000 people mining beneath the frigid soil

c) Committed to responsible mining practices and maintaining

maximum safety for its workers, at the same time improve

efficiency, life of assets and control costs.

Solution: Build the Connected Mine.

a) With Cisco, Goldcorp can manage its communications and mining operations on

one multiservice, secure IP network.

b) enables the firm to track people and equipment at all times.

c) intelligent ventilation system to conserve energy and improve airflow using

automated fans.

Business Results: A Safer, More Profitable Operation.

d) Dramatically improved efficiency of operations.

e) Cutting ventilation requirements by 50 percent translates into immediate cost

reduction.

f) Gained greater visibility enabling faster decision making and better safety.
