SSPC Trainthepainter is an internationally recognised Coating Applicator training and certification programme. Developed by industry experts SSPC Trainthepainter has been created in response to strong demand within the industrial coatings industry. Industry demands teams working on road, rail, oil and gas programmes all attain professional training and certificates. The SSPC Trainthepainter programme is approved and certified by SSPC and Lloyd’s Register.

Accredited supplementary modules in Thin Film Intumescent Coating, Thermal Metal Spraying, Marine Coating and High Pressure Waterjetting are available.

Training can only be delivered by experienced and qualified trainers who successfully complete the Train the trainer course. Assessments are conducted by independent assessors for all SSPC Certification.

High Pressure WaterjettingMarine Coating

Marine coating applicators face may challenges not encountered in other environments. The marine coating applicator course was developed to deliver key skills and knowledge required when working in this specialised and demanding sector.

High pressure water jetting is a very effective but hazardous method of surface preparation in the protective coating industry. Popularity of this process is growing due to environmental considerations. The course had been accredited by the WJA and is available to applicators who have attended the WJA mandatory 2 day health and safety course.

5. Water jetting standards (ISO and SSPC/NACE)

SSPC C6 Applicator

Day 1 (8 Hours) 10 students per 1 assessor

- C6 is designed for contractor personnel who wish to obtain certification as a coatings applicator.

- This program assesses the skills of coatings applicators who have a minimum of 1600 hours experience in proper hand and power tool surface preparation methods and brush and roller coating application.

- There is a theoretical examination and practical assessment.

SSPC C7 Abrasive Blaster


- C7 is designed for contractor personnel who wish to obtain certification as an abrasive blast cleaner.

- This program assesses the skills of abrasive blast cleaners who have a minimum of 800 hours experience in an industrial or marine environment.


SSPC C12 Spray Painter


- The C12 is designed for contractor personnel who wish to obtain certification as a spray painter.

- This program assesses the skills of sprayers who have a minimum of 800 hours applying protective coatings with airless/conventional spray in an industrial or marine environment.


CAS Level 1 Coating Applicator Specialist


- The Level I qualification is intended for entry-level Application Specialists with limited relevant work experience.

- Level I Application Specialists customarily work with and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 Application Specialists.

- The Level 1 student will have completed the SSPC Trainthepainter bronze, silver and gold training.

- There is a theoretical examination but no practical assessment. The theoretical examination will consist of questions on coatings application, abrasive blast cleaning and spray painting.

CAS Level 2 Coating Applicator Specialist


- The Level 2 full program is intended to review the individual’s ability to apply knowledge and demonstrate the ability to analyse while developing precision, resulting in minimal rework.

- The program is designed to certify personnel who have experience and training in all aspects of hands-on surface preparation and coating application of complex industrial and marine structures.

- Personnel will have 3000 Hours of a documented Apprenticeship and 450 Hours of formal training; or 6000 Hours of Painting/Blasting/Spraying Experience and no formal training.

Training and Certification Registration - Register to the SSPC Trainthepainter Programme as:

- Train a trainer by attending a scheduled Train the trainer course

- Ensure suitable facilities for both theoretical and practical training is in place

- Trainers deliver SSPC Trainthepainter training to Trainees, Applicators, Sprayers and Blasters using the advanced interactive online training programme or offline with the SSPC Trainthepainter App

- Apply for appropriate Certificates of Training Completion and ID cards from the Corrodere Support Office

- Undertake SSPC’s C6, C7, C12 and CAS Levels 1 and 2 Certification programme

Train the Trainer Pre-RequisitesThe trainer must possess the following qualifications and experience prior to attending the Train the trainer course.

- 5 years in the protective coating industry as a coating supervisor, manager or inspector and:

- NACE coating inspector level 2, Frosio level 3, SSPC PCI level 2, ICorr level 2 or equivalent

Senior management who have relevant experience but no inspection qualifications may be considered by the administration team.
