HONORARY MEMBER AWARD

Professor Jay Coakley received the 2015 Honorary Member Award at the Paris ISSA Congress.

Jay Coakley is Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, USA, and Visiting Professor at the University of Chichester, UK. He holds degrees from Regis College,

10

Denver, and the University of Notre Dame, USA. He is a long-standing member and former board member of the International Sociology of Sport Association. He is also a past president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport as well as the Sport Sociology Academy of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Professor Coakley has authored more than 150 articles, mostly focused on issues related to sport, society, and culture to promote changes that make social worlds more democratic and humane. Much of his work deals with youth sports, social inclusion, deviance, and violence. He is probably most well-known for his textbook Sports in Society: Issues and Controversies, which is in its 11th edition in the US, in addition to the editions for Southern Africa, Canada, Australia/New Zealand, and the United Kingdom which have been published in partnership with scholars who are active within ISSA (Cora Burnett, Peter Donnelly, Chris Hallinan, Steve Jackson, Brent McDonald, Elizabeth Pike). There are also Japanese and Chinese translations of this text. Jay is the founding editor of the Sociology of Sport Journal (1983-1989), and he has served on the Editorial Board of most journals in the sociology of sport field. His work has been recognised by a number of international bodies. In 2007, the Institute for International Sport selected Jay as one of the 100 Most Influential Sports Educators. Also in 2007, the University of Chichester awarded him an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding leadership in the sociology of sport. In 2009, the National Association of Sport and Physical Education inducted him into its Hall of Fame for contributing to a deeper understanding of sports in society. In addition, Professor Coakley has a long history of mentoring early career scholars, including members of ISSA and many from countries where the sociology of sport is in developmental stages. In a survey of ISSA members in 2014, approximately 20% of the membership who responded to the survey identified Jay as the person who had most influenced them as a sociologist of sport, more than any other individual identified in the survey responses.

INTERNATIONAL REVIEW FOR THE SOCIOLOGY OF SPORT

IRSS Now Publishing Eight Issues a Year with 2015 Subscription Special We are pleased to remind the sociology of sport community that the International Review for the Sociology of Sport, the most longstanding scholarly publication focused on sport and culture, is celebrating its 50th year of publication in 2015. In recognition of this milestone, the IRSS has expanded publication to eight issues a year, a change that has enabled a 33% increase to 1024 annual pages. As a special benefit to members of the International Sociology of Sport Association, there will be no membership fee increase in 2015 associated with IRSS subscriptions included with ISSA membership. While fee increases in 2016 are expected to be small, we encourage scholars who wish to defray fee increases to “lock in” their ISSA membership and IRSS subscription for multiple years at current rates by visiting the IRSS SAGE Publications site at http://www.sagepub.com/journals/Journal200937/subscribe

12

New Book and Media Reviews Editor and Call for Reviews 2015 brings a new Book and Media Reviews Editor to the IRSS. Authors wishing to review books or media (films, videos, interactive media) for the IRSS should contact Dr David Leonard, Washington State University, Comparative Ethnic Studies, PO Box 644010, Pullman, WA 99164-4010. Tel: (+1) 509 335-6854. Email: [email protected] Reviews of books or media provide a scholarly assessment of key works that may advance understanding of sport in social and cultural contexts. Reviews that provide an assessment of one work by a single reviewer are normally of 1500-2000 words in length, inclusive of references, notes, tables, and figures. Reviews that provide a comparative assessment of more than one work or an assessment of one work by multiple reviewers are more substantial integrative essays and are normally of 2000-3000 words in length, inclusive of references, notes, tables, and figures. IRSS accepts book or media review essays comparing 2 or 3 items on one topic and written by a single author as well as book or media review symposia in which the same item is reviewed by 2 or 3 different reviewers. Reviews do not require an abstract or key words. Book or Media Reviews should contain a heading which includes the Book or Media Title, Author, Publisher’s Name and Location, Date of Publication, Number of Pages, ISBN Number (and, if appropriate) eBook Number. Book or Media Review authors may refer to previous issues of IRSS for format guidance. Call for Research Articles The IRSS solicits research articles seated in the sociology of sport that shed light on social and cultural understandings of sport. Reaching its 50th year in 2015, the IRSS continues as the most longstanding scholarly publication focused on sport and culture. Interdisciplinary, inclusive, and global, the IRSS is the journal of the International Sociology of Sport Association and is published in partnership with SAGE Publications. Please visit the journal website for more information about its Aims & Scope, the Editorial Board, manuscript submission guidelines, and sample issues at http://irs.sagepub.com/.

Beginning in 2015, the IRSS publishes eight issues each year, a change that will allow for a 33% increase to 1024 annual pages. The IRSS uses the SAGE Track online manuscript submission site powered by ScholarOne Manuscripts to expedite review and publication. When combined with the SAGE OnlineFirst publication program that makes accepted manuscripts available to scholars within weeks of acceptance, the IRSS has the ability to get scholarly work promptly disseminated. Under the guidance of Editor-in-Chief Lawrence Wenner, the IRSS has seven distinguished Corresponding Editors from across the globe available for consultation and a 40 member international Editorial Board. Articles considered by the IRSS include standard-length research articles as well as shorter research reports. The IRSS aims to be an open and attractive place for the prompt publication of research aimed at the international community. The IRSS editorial team looks forward to having the opportunity to consider your work. Manuscripts may be submitted at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/irss.
