1 Message from the Principal: Dear Parents, Well, it must be IASAS time again because I find myself the lone High School administrator as Mr. Brown gallivants off with the soccer teams to cheer them on in Bangkok – good luck boys and girls! I hope that our success can surpass that of Liverpool’s abysmal start to this season. Similar good wishes go out to our Volleyballers and Cross Country athletes who are currently digging, setting, spiking and running in Kuala Lumpur. You can watch the games live by surfing your way to the following sites: For the soccer, go to http://inside.isb.ac.th/athletics/iasas-soccer-live-feed/ and here’s the link for the volleyball. http://www.livestream.com/iskl In last week’s bulletin, Mr. Brown omitted a huge piece of news. The Silver Fox celebrated a biggie last Thursday and although it would be insensitive of me to divulge how many this time, I can report that during the Parent Liaison meeting with Mr. Brown in the high school office, the theme tune from Hawaii 5-0 could be clearly heard! Good wishes from parents, students and faculty flooded in throughout the day and his office is still full of balloons – Happy Birthday Mr. Brown! Last Thursday, our monthly High School Parent coffee morning culminated in a 45 minute tour of the new facilities that have recently been unveiled for our students. These included the beautiful new Tennis Center on the roof with eight Astroturf courts, sheltered from wind, rain and sun to replace the 6 forlorn courts that used to occupy that roof-space. The tour also included the Fitness Suite, Robotics and Design Technology Area, new Drama Room, new Film Editing Suite and three new Learning Support classrooms. We are already looking at what improvements can be made to the High School during the summer of 2013. Looking forward to next week – I would like to thank all those parents who have provided us with feedback on the Parent Teacher Conference booking system that continues to improve with your input and is now in its third year of use. PTCs will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, October 16 th and 17 th between 1:0pm and 6:0pm with an early student dismissal at 12:0pm. There are still spaces available for some teachers (although many now have full schedules for those two afternoons) so please navigate to PowerSchool (http://powerschool.ismanila.org/public/home.html ) and make your last minute reservations. Also next week is this year’s high school play, “The Book Thief”, which will run from Thursday to Saturday, October 18 th to 20 th in the Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are available at the cashier’s office. Come along and support our thespians – I am looking forward to another great performance. PSAT Testing on October 17

The PSAT test will be given on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Registration is now closed. Students who are registered should report to their assigned testing locations no later than 7:15 a.m. on test day. Students with last names beginning with A-P will be testing in the Lofthouse. Students with last names beginning with Q-Z will be testing in the Little Theater.

Students registered for the PSAT will need to bring #2 pencils and a calculator (with extra batteries) on the day of the test.

Please note that the test will be given on a Wednesday, so you must arrange transportation for your child to arrive earlier than the usual "late start" time. Students should be IN their testing rooms by 7:15 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. test start. Testing should conclude at approximately 11 a.m.

In January, students will receive their scores along with their test booklets so they are able to review specific questions. Students also receive feedback regarding their strengths and weaknesses in each section of the test. This information can then be used for SAT preparation. In addition, students taking the PSAT will have access to the College Board's My Road program, a career and college search resource.

If you have questions about the PSAT, please contact your child's high school counselor.

FROM THE FINE ARTS OFFICE:

A reminder that the HS Play, an adaptation of Markus

Zuzak's bestselling novel The Book Thief, is on next week.

The story centers upon Leisel Meminger, a young German

girl living in the midst of World War Two. As a book that is

part of the Grade 10 reading list and also taught in MS

Honors English, the play should prove to be both

educational and entertaining. The play will be performed

on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of October

at 6.30pm. There will also be a matinee at 2.30pm on

Saturday the 21st.

Tickets are available from the cashier now. Here is the

28 September 2012

Dear ISM Parents, Mabuhay! Every year, it has been International School Manila’s tradition to celebrate the host country’s culture through its Filipiniana program with the culmination of the prestigious Philippine Cultural Club’s (PCC) “Pista sa ISM.” Both High School and Middle School students, faculty and parents will be working hand in hand for this much-anticipated event, which will be held on October 25th Thursday, 2012. For the parents who are new to our school, “Pista sa ISM” is an annual celebration of the Philippine culture patterned towards the traditional Barrio Fiesta which also features a parade of native costumes, marching bands, cultural presentations, and a talent program that showcases the uniqueness of our students and faculty. More than a celebration of Filipino culture, however, this is also a fund-raising event for the benefit of the local communities that the school is in partnership with, such as Papaya Academy, Virlanie Foundation, PCF, SPECS-TEC, among others. Also, some of the funds go to the ISM Disaster Relief Fund. Once again, dear parents, we would like to seek your participation by asking if you could donate for this event. As in the past years, we are accepting cash or check donations for food sponsorship. To minimize excess food and wastage, each grade level is assigned with a particular Filipino cuisine. Please find below the reply slip. ALL donations, be it cash or check, should be deposited to the Cashier’s Office of the school, care of the PCC account. Kindly send your donations on or before October 24, 2012 to the Cashier’s Office. Please make your checks payable to International School Manila. Please print this letter, preferably in a long bond (8.5 in x 13 in) paper, accomplish and cut-out the reply slip below and return it to us by sending it to the ISM Cashier’s Office, together with your cash/check donation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact any of us, PCC officers, and/or any of the parent liaisons for each grade level and club advisors. Attached please find the list of parent volunteers/liaisons. PCC will once again provide a truly fun and memorable experience for the students, parents and faculty. Without your participation and support we will not be able to realize a successful event. Maraming salamat po! Sincerely yours, NOTED: Juliana Ocampo Mr. William R. S. Brown Mr. Simon Gillespie President High School Principal Middle School Principal
