There are several reasons that the Sopronterminal has achieved a central hubfunction between Western Europe,Central/Eastern Europe and South-EasternEurope:• Historical reasons: Long-standing co-

operation between Hungarokombi (UIRRmember) / ICF and MÁV Zrt. / GYSEV Zrt.

• For years the Sopron transhipmentterminal is equipped with a gantry crane,a mobile loading machine and since 2000with a second gantry crane. It isconsidered as a comparably modernterminal.

• Additional services are provided such ascustoms services, organisation of roadtransport, storage, transhipment, repair ofcontainers and a container washingfacility as well as an own duty-free zone

• Due to the favourable geographicallocation and excellent staff, Sopron took

over a distributing role in rail transport.• Flexible cooperation with ÖBB due to

common Austrian-Hungarian borderstation.

• Budapest and its surroundings areprimarily important because of maritimeborne traffic Sopron is the onlyHungarian terminal that can perform thetransit function for wagons and load units.

• Sopron allows an easier passing betweenHungary and Austria (towards Western-Europe)

• GYSEV owns infrastructure / facilities.• Smooth cooperation between GYSEV

CARGO and former ICF membercompanies

• Sopron terminal can form intermodal unittrains not only by loading in terminal andby the use of shuttle suites, but also byshunting of wagons

• For almost 20 years, GYSEV / GYSEV CARGO have been forming and starting wagonload and intermodal unit trains

• Sopron provides a hub function for wagonload / intermodal transport between Western and Eastern / South-East Europe.

• Principal train services of GYSEV CARGO− Trains built by collecting volumes from dispersed traffic or unit train traffic GYSEV facilitates hub function, organises shunting of wagons and thereby fulfils an important role in the transport chain

− Transit with project trains offering the clients superior quality services− Liner trains are offered on a daily basis

Challenge/mission:Further develop GYSEV / GYSEV Cargo to an internationally acknowledged service provider for the rail freight transport and logistics market.

• High emphasis on getting to know customers and their demands

• Demands specified in agreements and contracts Adjustment of train timetables and technologies

• During train operation, a continuous customer contactis facilitated to ensure up-to-date information on− Actual train location in comparison to the timetable− Wagon detachments− En-route loading/unloading of loads− Other relevant incidents arising during train operation

Concept and components – customer relation

Concept and components – production technology

• Main container data is recorded from wagon list;

• Container data (from wagon list) is used to organise furtherforwarding of containers and its transhipment to trucks;

• Documents are checked together with theperformance sheet of the container;

• If documents are missing, the responsible railway operator is informed who in turn requests the needed documents from his customer;

• Most important data to be recorded:− Arriving train number / arrival date;

− Container length, gross weight of the goods;

− Destination station;

− Wagon numbers with container numbers;

− Other problems – recording missing documents EX / invoice if applicable.

Page 10 Good Practice Manual, 04/2013

Concept and components – production technology

• Wagons and containers are examined regarding theirtechnical condition (In case of disorder: Report todelivering railway company)

• Containers are unloaded with the gantry crane(after approximately 2 hours)

• Collection of containers with the same destination/route.

• As soon as enough containers have been collected,operator hands over a container list to Sopron term inal

• On basis of the container list, containers are allocated tosuitable wagons and eventually loading is implemented

• The ready train is processed in the IT system :container / wagon / train numbers are allocated

• Technology is recorded on a so-called “Operation Sheet”

Concept and components – transport statement

• Requirements of customers and partner railway companies are analysed for determine the most optimal route and timetable

• Information on preferred route/timetables is used as input tothe international FTE timetable conferences

• Actual timetable data is summarised in a so-called X chart , made available for employees in charge of the hauling of trains

Concept and components – IT support (”VIHAR“)

• “VIHAR” database provides current information tocustomers about the actual location of the train

• Data of commercial documents (shipping documents) andscanned pictures are recorded in this database

• As a next step, “VIHARCont” providesthe following data / features:− Container data of container trains− Container location in terminal− Tracking of transhipments− Tracking of statistics and invoicing− Container bookings− Support of recorded transit of wagons of container trains

• GYSEV and GYSEV CARGO offer optimal conditions for railway operations;

• Hub-function and sorting in Sopron enables the transport of containers within the same train to different forwarding and destination stations;

• Sopron is an appropriate location to form “land-clear” unit trainsfor the transport of containers with different destinations;

• Customers’ needs are taken up flexible as proved e.g. by intro-ducing extended terminal opening times (almost 24/7 opening);

• A growing appreciation of the Turkish market has been observed (increased volumes operated via in Sopron);

• Intermodal container traffic is expected tofurther grow in the future
