2. INTRODUCTION TO THE INTEGRATION OF SCIENCE, LIBERAL ARTS, AND HUMANITIES
- Integration can happen on an individual lesson basis or as an entire thematic unit
- Integration and thematic instruction are both based on the idea that people acquire knowledge best when learning in the context of a coherent whole.
- Language Arts, Art, Social Studies, and Music are the specific subjects that we will talk about integrating
- A lot of the time we dont even realize that we are already integrating these subjects into our lesson plans
- Any time we write a paper, read a book, give oral presentations, or define vocabulary we are already integrating language arts
3. INTRODUCTION TO INTEGRATION
- Any time we learn about important past inventions, inventors, or how science effects our society we are integrating social studies
- Any time we create a model, draw a picture, or make displays for science fairs we are integrating art
- Throughout this powerpoint we will be going more in depth into how to further this integration for each subject and will be providing some ideas for everyone to use
- We will also be attempting to enlighten everyone to more reasons why integration into each subject can be very beneficial for both teachers and students
4. INTEGRATION OF LANGUAGE ARTS
- Language Arts is probably the easiest and most overlooked of all combinable subjects
- Any time we have the class read their textbooks to themselves or read out loud we are integrating
- Any time we have them write us a paper we are integrating
5. LANGUAGE ARTS INTEGRATION
- The obvious next step that must be taken is for us to integrate language arts goals and objectives into our lesson plans
- One way we can do this by just adjusting current lessons plans where we never noticed we already had language arts integrated
- Or we can actively seek to make integrated units through activities like reading books for further knowledge, writing papers on pretty much anything, or having oral presentations on what weve learned
- A great resource for younger students is the large variety of science oriented entertaining books available
- The Magic School Bus is one example of a book series that enables us to make science and reading fun while still learning important lessons
- Another series that is good for 4-6 thor even older students is the Scientist in the Field Study
- Each of the books is about 48 pages long and profusely illustrated with photographs
- How can it be done?
- Great Literature is Available
6. LANGUAGE ARTS INTEGRATION
- Written by Houghton Mifflin, the Scientists in the Field series provides an excellent introduction to both careers in science and to specific scientific investigations. There are presently three books in the series. "The Snake Scientist," "The Wildlife Detectives," and "Digging for Bird-Dinosaurs"
- Each book features the fascinating story of a particular scientist and/or investigation. Each book emphasizes careers in science, and each provides additional resources for children interested in learning more
- In combination with reading these books it would be quite easy to have literature circles or fishbowls about them
- Literature circles and fishbowls are fun and interesting ways for kids to further explore the books theyve been reading through group discussions
- Thus you are having kids learn about the scientific facts that were required while still encouraging reading and language arts advancement
7. LANGUAGE ARTS INTEGRATION THROUGH PROJECTS
- Another great way to integrate language arts into our science curriculum is by researching topics, writing reports, and then presenting them
- As we all know we scrapped our famous scientist presentation for this class
- Yet, here we had a perfect example of how we could have integrated language arts, science, and even some social studies into our lesson
- If we had the student research books and the internet for information on the scientist, we had him reading
- When he was preparing his report on the scientist and his speech to give in class, we had him writing
- When he presented himself as the scientist we had him giving us an oral report/presentation
- This lesson or mini-unit alone, would have covered quite a few of the language arts objectives, while still focusing on a science topic
8. ART INTEGRATION INTO SCIENCE
- Next we will talk about how to integrate art into science
- Many people would think that art integration into science could be quite difficult or even pointless
- But in a nation in a budget crisis many schools have art once or twice a week, or even not at all
- Thus, art through integration from other subjects is the only way many students will get to participate in an art program at all
- Is that bad? Why should we care about art? You will be surprised at the reasons
9. ART IN THE SCIENCE CLASSROOM-WHY?
- Students learn in a variety of ways.
- Visual Learning - Seeing
- Audio Learning - Hearing
- Psychomotor Doing
- Learning Styles are diverse-the creative process is important to many students.
10. SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT ART
- One of the most important aspects of art shows in the results of extensive studies that have proven that students who participate in the arts score higher on SAT tests regardless of socio-economic status
- The arts instill foundation skills needed for employment, but also for life,skills like reasoning, making decisions, thinking creatively, solving problems and visualizing .)
- An 11-year study examined youth in low-income neighborhoods and found that those who participated in arts programs were much more likely to be high academic achievers, elected to class office, participate in math andscience fairsand win academic awards
- Terry Semel, past chairman of Warner Bros., said,"Art is central to a civilized society. Kids who create don't destroy."
11. INTEGRATION OF ART
- Now that everyone realizes that art is actually an important aspect of our education we can move on to talking about how it can be, or is already integrated
- Just like language arts, art is already integrated into quite a few lessons where we may not have noticed
- Every time we have our students illustrating or creating models they are integrating art
- Another important aspect, which could almost be thought of as a mini-unit is the once a year science fair
- Here students create visually appealing backdrops for their projects to stimulate interest, please the eye, and attract crowds
- Yet, this is just one of the ways art is easily integrated into science
12. HOW TO USE ART
- Do not use art in every aspect of the science study.
- Choose activities where the art enhances the project.
- Utilize multiple forms of artistic representation.
- ALWAYS explain purpose for using an art project.
- Enhance learning of LD students.
- Artistic projects makes special connection with ELL students.
13. SPECIAL EFFORT IS EASILY MADE FOR ART INTEGRATION
- The average scientific textbook is full of visually stimulating ideas and images
- To integrate art into these lessons we could have the students draw pictures to go with the main terms.
- Also Physics, Biology, Earth Science, and Space Science all fit in well with drawing illustrations to proper terms
- Say you were studying cells.As you studied different types of cells, say plant and animal cells, you could have the students illustrate the entire cell and all the different parts that make it up
- This way not only do they learn definitions, but they will be apply to associate these definitions with images.
- It is always easier to remember something when you have a concrete image in your head, rather than just a memorized term.
14. ART INTEGRATION - WHY NOT TAKE IT ONE STEP FURTHER?
- While you were studying a chapter on cells why not create a cell model?
- Animal or plant cell models can easily be made from substances like jello or styrofoam.
- This way not only will your student be learning about cells, but they will have first hand experience about what the cell looks like and most likely be enjoying themselves immensely as they work.
- You could also have them describe what each part of the cell they created does, and in turn add some language arts to the lesson.
15. SOCIAL STUDIES IN THE SCIENCE CLASSROOM WHY?
- There is a direct correlation between scientific breakthrough and history.
- Science is a part of history
- There is no way to separate them.
16. HOW TO INCORPORATE THE TWO:
- 1.Use scientists as pieces in a lesson on the chronology of the world
- 2.Every piece of science has a history as well as significance culturally-explain those features.
- 3.Take the time to make connections.
- The physics of moon landing as an historically relevant event
- Galileo as a astronomer and what his discoveries mean.
- Dinosaurs-what they were and how they died.
- Pangaea-Beginning of the world
- The physics of warfare
- Atom bomb-how it works, what it has done
- Radio-radio waves
- Deep Space exploration
- Global Warming how and whys
18. MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM WHY?
- Establish a positive learning environment
- Build a sense of anticipation
- Energize learning activities
- Focus concentration
- Improve Memory
- Provide Inspiration and motivation
- Add an element of fun
- Accentuate theme orientated units
- Increase attention
- Enhance Imagination
19. HOW TO USE IT.
- Use music for a purpose.
- Utilize period music for period work.
- Use on a low level unless absolutely necessary
- Use different pieces of music
- Always listen to music before your kids do.
- There is bad science music.
- Have fun with it!
