Maintenance of the soils productive capacity requiresintegration of plant nutrition and soil improvement

practices. It is thus necessary to apply agroecologicalpractices and generate information about their e ects on soilproperties. e objective of this study was to evaluate thee ect of integrated management of inorganic and organicfertilizers on phosphatase and urease activity, colonizationof native mycorrhizal fungi and corn ( Zea mays L.) yield.

e experiment was conducted under rainfed conditionsin Teopisca, state of Chiapas. e experimental design wascomplete randomized blocks with a factorial arrangement (24) of treatments: inorganic fertilizer levels (60-30 and 120-60 N-P) and organic fertilizer (none or control, compost, bokashi and worm humus; rate 6 t ha - 1). In vegetativegrowth, alkaline phosphatase was 74.5 % higher with wormhumus than the control without organic fertilizer, while acid phosphatase was 41.9 % higher with compost than the control.During owering, urease activity decreased 46.2 % with thehigh dosage of fertilization. e percentage of mycorrhizalcolonization was 1.3 times higher with bokashi than without organic fertilizer. Grain yield varied from 2152 to 3616 kg ha - 1;the lowest value corresponded to the low dosage of inorganicfertilizer without organic fertilizer, while the highest values were obtained with the higher dosage of inorganic fertilizer with worm humus. With the low level of inorganic fertilizer, yield increased 3.8, 12.7 and 11.5 % with compost, bokashiand worm humus, while with the high level, the increase was17.7, 21.9 and 30.5 %. e analysis of the results showing positive e ects on enzymatic activity, mycorrhizal funguscolonization and corn yield suggest the importance of integrated management of inorganic and organic fertilizersin rainfed maize in the state of Chiapas.

Maintaining the productive capacity of thesoil requires integration of plant nutritionand soil improvement practices thatallow adequate management of nutrients to preventde cits or losses from leaching and losses of organimatter, and in this way, enhance soil biodiversityand optimize soil variables linked to its conservation(Labrador, 1996). For this reason, it is necessaryto apply agroecological practices and generateinformation on the evolution of soil characteristicsunder di erent conditions of management (Astier-Caldernet al ., 2002; Bautista-Cruzet al ., 2004).

Organic fertilizers contribute organic matter, nutrients and microorganism which favor soil fertilityand plant nutrition (Eghballet al ., 2004). However,

they have a low capacity as source of nutrientscompared with chemical fertilizers. e content of Nin composts is 1-3 %, and the nitrogen mineralizationrate is around 10 % (Sikora and Enkiri, 2001), andtherefore, only a fraction of the N and other nutrientsis available the rst year after application. To satisfthe nutritional requirements of crops such as corn, large amounts of organic fertilizers are required(Lpez-Martnezet al ., 2001), implying that largeamounts of organic residues need to be available foprocessing and adequate conditions are required forits storage and application. An alternative approachis to use small quantities of organic fertilizerssupplemented with inorganic fertilizers.

Mineralization of organic matter impliesmetabolic processes catalyzed by enzymes. Enzymatactivity is easily measured and is an indicator of earlchanges in soil quality because of its relationship with micro ora and its rapid response to agriculturalmanagement practices (De la Paz-Jimnezet al .,2002). Urease and phosphatases have receivedmore attention because of their implications in thebio-geochemical and nutrient cycles (Makoi and

Ndakidemi, 2008). Urease catalyzes the reactionof hydrolysis of the C-N bonds of some amidesand of the urea in ammonium and carbon dioxide.Phosphatases catalyze the reaction of hydrolysis othe ester and phosphate anhydride bonds. eseenzymes have a fundamental function in the P cycleby releasing the orthophosphate ion of organicand inorganic compounds, making it available forplants.

Arbuscular mycorrhiza is a type of symbiosis thaimproves the plants capacity to absorb water andnutrients, as a consequence of its greater accessibilitto resources distant from the root system (Gonzlez-Chvez and Ferrera-Cerrato, 1994). Maize is afacultative mycotrophic plant that responds to thepresence of native mycorrhizal fungi in poor tomoderately fertile soils (Gavito and Varela, 1995;Gavito and Miller, 1998). Phosphate fertilizationdecreases mycorrhizal colonization and the bene tthat it might provide to the crop; in contrast organicfertilizers tend to increase the mycorrhizal inoculumpotential of the soil, root colonization and nutrientabsorption (Goslinget al ., 2006).

Application of organic matter also increasesphosphatase activity by stimulating microbialbiomass and root secretion (Deng and Tabatabai,

1997; Pruakayasthaet al ., 2006). Acid phosphataseis a ected by plant physiology and by the supplyof inorganic P: its activity decreases with age ofthe plant and increases when there is a P de ciency(Cruz-Floreset al ., 2005). In contrast, urease activity responds variably to the application of organicfertilizers, and there is greater urease activity in soiamended with compost than in those without (Banik et al ., 2006; Antonious 2003). However, Serra- Wittlinget al . (1995) and Crecchioet al. (2001)indicate that compost has no e ect on urease, whileGarca-Gilet al. (2000) report that it is inhibited by a continuous application of composts made frommunicipal wastes. Besides, it has been observed thaurease activity is inhibited in response to nitrogenfertilization (Ajwaet al ., 1999; Crecchioet al ., 2001;Lalfakzualaet al ., 2008). us, with integratedmanagement of organic and inorganic fertilizers, theactivity of these enzymes and mycorrhizal funguscolonization could be suppressed by the presence oinorganic N and P.

erefore, the objective of this study was toevaluate the e ect of the application of three organic

fertilizers combined with two dosages of inorganicfertilizers on colonization of native mycorrhizal fungand on the activity of urease, acid phosphatase, andalkaline phosphatase, as well as on corn yield.

and between rows (10 000 mounds ha- 1, a normal population of local race maize in the region).

In the early vegetative growth phase (30 das), owering(100 das) and grain ll (150 das), compound soil samples of therhizosphere were collected at a distance of 5-10 cm from theplant stem and a depth of 15 cm in each experimental unit. esamples were sifted (5 mm). Phosphatase activity was determinefollowing Tabatabai and Bremner (1969). One gram of soil wasincubated at 37 C for 1 h in a solution of 1 mL p-nitrophenylphosphate ( p-NPP), 0.2 mL toluene and 4 mL of universal bu er(pH 6.5 for acid phosphatase; pH 11 for alkaline phosphatase).

en, 1 mL of CaCl2 0.5 M and 4 mL of NaOH 0.5 M wereadded and the mixture was ltered through Whatman No. 2

lter paper. Formation of p-nitrophenol ( p-NP) was measured ina spectrophotometer (Beckman Mod. 25-1331) at 420 nm, andits concentration was calculated using a pattern curve with 10,20, 30, 40 and 50 mg of p-NP.

Urease activity was determined as NH4+

released inhydrolysis (Tabatabai and Bremner, 1972). Five grams of soil were incubated for 2 h at 37 C in a solution of 9 mL Tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (THAM) 0.05M at pH 9, 0.2mL toluene and 1 mL 0.2 M solution of urea as substrate. ereleased ammonium was determined by distilling an aliquot of20 mL by vapor drag with 0.2 g MgO calcined at 700 C as thecatalyzer (Bremner, 1965).

To determine the percentage of native mycorrhizal funguscolonization, the roots of one mound of maize were collectedfrom each experimental unit 100 das; these were preserved inFAA (formol-alcohol-acetic acid) until use. e roots were

clari ed with KOH and H2O2 then dyed with trypan blue inlactoglycerol (Phillips and Hayman, 1970). e frequency with which root segments were observed with mycorrhizal structureusing an optical compound microscope (100x), was recordedaccording to Giovanetti and Mosse (1980).

Maize ears were harvested at physiological maturity from thecentral part of the experimental units in order to obtain grainyield.

e data were subjected to an analysis of variance and theTukey range test for comparison of means (p 0.05), using thesoftware SPSS 8.0 for Windows.

Mean values of the treatments with inorganic andorganic fertilizers were 285.0, 54.5 and 31.7 mg p-NP g- 1 for acid phosphatase and 169.7, 35.7 and12.2 m g p-NP g- 1 for alkaline phosphatase. Boltonet al . (1985) and Acosta-Martnez and Tabatabai(2000) report a reduction in the activity of theseenzymes over sampling dates, with higher values inthe early phase of the growth cycle. e decrease inphosphatase activity 100 and 150 das may be relatedto the physiological development of the plant and anincrease in the P supply from organic and inorganicsources (Cruz-Floreset al ., 2005) but also to theexcess of soil moisture during the rainy season due tde cient drainage. Comparison of the two enzymesshowed that acid phosphatase activity was 1.7 timeshigher than that of alkaline phosphatase, coinciding with Deng and Tabatabai (1997), who state that acid

soils have higher values of acid phosphatase than oalkaline phosphatase. In our study, soil pH was 5.3.Both enzymes showed highly signi cant di erence

(p 0.01; Figure 1) among organic fertilizers andfor the interaction sampling organic fertilizer;inorganic fertilization did not have a signi cant e ect

e mean e ect of organic fertilizers showed thatalkaline phosphatase activity was greater with wormhumus (92.1 mg p-NP g- 1) than with compost and without organic fertilizer (66.1 and 66.4 mg p-NPg- 1), while bokashi occupied the intermediate place(71.2 mg p-NP g- 1). In contrast, acid phosphataseactivity was higher with compost (133.4 mg p-NPg- 1) than in soil without organic fertilizer (101.4 mg p-NP g- 1), while bokashi and worm humus hadintermediate values (126.3 and 105.8 mg p-NP g- 1).However, only on the rst sampling date there weresigni cant di erences in enzymatic activity: alkalinphosphatase was 74.5 % higher with worm humusthan without organic fertilizer, while with compostand bokashi it was not di erent from the control without fertilizer. Also, acid phosphatase was 41.9 %higher with compost than without organic fertilizer,

while with bokashi and worm humus it was notdi erent from the control (Figure 1).e e ect of worm humus on alkaline phosphatase

and that of compost on acid phosphatase suggestthat the root and rhizospheric micro ora responddi erentially during synthesis and secretion of theseenzymes. e roots produce acid phosphatase butlack alkaline phosphatase activity since the latterenzyme derives principally from bacteria, fungi and

It has been shown thatthe application of organic matter increases alkalinephosphatase activity by stimulating microbial activity(Purakayasthaet al ., 2006) and because of the greaterdiversity of bacteria (Sakuraiet al ., 2008). Also, the worms provide nutritive substances (productsof secretion and excretion) which stimulate activityof microbes, together with chemical mediatorsreleased by worms which act at low concentrationsin microbial metabolism (Bidetet al . 1998). us, itis possible to infer that worm humus promoted soilmicrobial activity and that compost stimulated theability of the roots, in both cases, to synthesize andsecrete the enzymes.

inorganic fertilization levels among sampling dateshowed that in the second sampling date ureaseactivity was 46.2 % lower with the higher dosage, but on the other two sampling dates there were nosigni cant di erences between the levels of inorganifertilization (Figure 2). e triple interaction wasdue to the fact that only on the second samplingdate there were signi cant di erences betweentreatments, mainly in the treatments without organicfertilizer, with the lowest value for the higher dosagof inorganic fertilization (Figure 3).

e decrease in urease activity with the higherdose of inorganic fertilizer on the second samplingdate may have been due to an e ect of the timingand the method of application of nitrogen fertilizer.

e second sampling was done 10 d after the secondapplication of fertilizer in the form of urea at the

base of the plants. Production of urease is suppressed when NH4+ or NO3- are added by productsformed by microbial assimilation (McCarty et al .,1992). erefore, it is reasonable to assume thatthe concentration of NH4+ in the treatment with ahigher dosage of inorganic fertilizer without organicfertilizer caused inhibition of urease activity, as waobserved by Ajwaet al . (1999), Crecchioet al . (2001)and Lalfakzualaet al . (2008).

    Colonization of native mycorrhizal fungi

Mycorrhizal colonization varied from 29 to 43 %between treatments (Table 2). ere were signi cantdi erences (p 0.05) among organic fertilizers, nodi erences (p>0.30) between levels of inorganicfertilization, and a marginally signi cant e ect(p=0.07) of the interaction between the two factors. Averaging the two levels of inorganic fertilizationthe percentage of colonization was 20 and 30 %higher with bokashi than with worm humus or without organic fertilizer, while with compost it hadan intermediate percentage.

ere was no signi cant e ect of inorganicfertilization, but a comparison of colonization inplants without organic fertilizer and in those withorganic fertilizer showed little variation (33 to 39 %)

with the lower dosage of inorganic fertilizer, whil with the higher dosage of fertilizer, plants withoutorganic fertilizer had 29 % colonization and thosetreated with bokashi had 43 %. Phosphate fertilizationa ects colonization of facultative mycotrophic plantssuch as maize, because they can suppress mycorrhizformation when large amounts of P are available inthe soil (Gavito and Varela, 1995; Gavito and Miller,1998). In addition, organic fertilizers stimulate thedevelopment of arbuscular mycorrhizae (Goslinget al ., 2006).

    c onclusIones

bokashi than without organic fertilizer, while withcompost the yield was intermediate (Table 3).e positive e ect of the organic fertilizers on

grain yield can be associated with the N and P supplyfrom these amendments (Table 1), which stimulatesoil acid and alkaline phosphatase activity (Figure 1and colonization of native mycorrhizal fungi (Table2). e most important contribution of N and P by organic fertilizers is mineralization of the organicforms that occurs over time, an aspect that was notevaluated, while K is rapidly available. e yieldresponse to organic fertilizers may be partly due tothe contribution of N and P through mineralizationsince their availability at the moment the organicfertilizers are incorporated is very low.

It is important to stress that yield as an e ect of organic fertilizers was higher with the higher dosagof inorganic fertilization. 21.9 and 30.5 % higher. is means that yields showa maximum increment of 292 and 846 kg grain ha- 1 (low and high dose). at is, regardless of the typeof organic fertilizer, maize grain yield was improveby fertilization, possibly because it stimulatedmineralization of organic fertilizers due to greateravailability of the N and P for the microbial biomassobserved with a mixture of urea and compost in asoil with a low inorganic N content (Kyung-Hwaet al ., 2004).

    c onclusIons

In the early phase of vegetative growth there wasgreater alkaline phosphatase activity with wormhumus and greater acid phosphatase activity withcompost than without organic fertilizer. However,

activity of these enzymes decreased during owerinand grain ll. In contrast, urease activity was greateduring owering and grain ll than during vegetativegrowth, but there was a decrease during owering aan e ect of the higher dose of fertilization.

Grain yield varied from 2152 to 3616 kg ha- 1; thelowest value was obtained with 60-30 N-P withoutorganic fertilizer, whereas the highest value wasobtained with 120-60 N-P and worm humus. Withthe lower dosage of inorganic fertilizer with compostbokashi and worm humus, yield increased by 3.8,12.7 and 11.5 %, while with the higher dosage itincreased 17.7, 21.9 and 30.5 %. Analysis of theseresults suggests that integrated management ofinorganic and organic fertilizers is important forimproving maize production and point to the needto study the dynamics of mineralization and nutrientsupply during the crop growth cycle.
