University of Exeter Business School International Photographic Exhibition

‘What is special about where you come from?’

To celebrate the international diversity of the University of Exeter Business School, students have been involved in a photography and film competition, representing different aspects of the places they come from. Drawing on themes such as people, cultural activities, places and landscapes, the exhibition seeks to develop interest and understanding of students’ diverse backgrounds. Over 150 photographs are showcased, taken by students from around the world, including China, Thai-land, Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Germany, Italy and France, as well as the UK. Students in all levels of study - from 1st year undergraduate through to postgraduate students and PhD candidates - have participated, with stunning results. There are four winning entries (three sets of photographs and one video) and a further five highly com-mended sets of photographs. Judging criteria ranged from how the photographs (or film) tell a story about the student’s home locality, to how the photographs work together as a set, to photographic or film technique and composition. Every one of the entries has been of an extremely high standard, and every one highlights interesting aspects of the places that students come from. This brochure gives examples from the work of all students who entered the competition. The competition has been organised through the JISC-funded ‘Integrative Technologies’ project, a joint initiative between the University of Exeter Busi-ness School and Education Enhancement. It is a ‘Students as Change Agents’ activity, with students taking the lead in enabling others in their School to understand the richness of international diversity.

“Exeter is a quiet and peaceful place which is good for study. I love the gorgeous green campus. Every single student is respected and valued. Whatever problem we have we always have someone to turn to for help. I enjoy a full life in Exeter with amazing friends in the Student Staff Liaison Committee, table tennis society, UNICEF and Globe society.“

CHEN WANG ANHUI, CHINA

Why I came to Exeter: “Exeter University offered exactly the course I´ve always wanted to study. In addition to that, a very competitive ranking combined with a breathtaking countryside surrounding the Uni-versity won me over immediately. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment at this University, and also used the possibility to pick up a sport that is barely known in Austria. Rugby.”

“Hi, my name’s Liz, I originally come from France but have

the double nationality French and English. Residing in the

UK for the first time, at Exeter University, is a thrilling,

fresh new experience as I am endlessly discovering aspects

of the British culture which you can only appreciate once

you’re personally plunged into it. I am currently reading

Economics (combined with Spanish starting from next

year!) in my first year and plan a year abroad in 2011.

Joining the surfing society as an avid beginner and regular

tennis within the AU are only a couple examples illustrating

my decision to make the most of the Uni adventure.”

ELIZABETH GREEN Highly Commended PARIS, FRANCE

"I am a first year student, reading BA Management with Leadership. Originally from Bulgaria, I grew up in Germany, studying at a French school. My multicultural background prompted me to get involved in diverse projects, from becoming a Belly Dancing instructor to starting a Sustainability group. As a student at Exeter, I appreciate the international environment and this project is just one example of the rich culture students here have to offer. "

“Ciao, I’m Ludovica Innocenzi and I’m Italian. Living abroad for the majority of my life, travelling from one country to the next, has influenced my accent and mannerisms, but I remain, unchanged, an Italian at heart. My family currently resides in Zurich, Switzerland, while I am studying in Exeter. I am a second year student on a 3-year course studying BA Economics and Politics. I took a gamble on Exeter when applying for universities, having never visited it before and knowing little about its location and size. Having lived in relatively big cities for all my life, it was a shock when I finally found it on a map, I could barely make it out, and I started thinking I’d made a mistake. I was proven wrong, a hundred times over; Exeter is the perfect location for a University, the city is beautiful and the fact that Exeter is small is anything but a negative aspect. In fact, I feel it enables the local community and the University to develop an implicit bond, a bubble of trust (almost) – going to the same shops, and seeing the same faces gives you a wonderful ‘homey’ feeling. Exeter offers more societies than are possible to participate in over the course of 3 years, I’m enjoying the benefits of being part of a team, Womens’ First Volleyball Team, and currently also joined the Womens’ Football Club. I am also currently seeking to set up my own society called ‘Be The Change’.”

“My name is Malik M.K. Benzenine, I've studied in the UK for nearly 4 years now. I am currently undertaking a MSc in International Business, which indeed doesn't leave me much time for my passion - photography. It is a shame because Exeter and the surroundings are truly amazing places to take pictures of. My family home is in the south of France in Provence. The pictures I have submitted for the competition represent the main reasons of my deeply rooted love for that fantastic region: character, beauty and... wine! I hope you get the feel of what it is like there.”

“I am from a small village near Market Harborough, Leicestershire, UK. Currently studying Business Economics in my first year. I like lots about Exeter but the main aspects are the diverse cultures and seeing people you know when you are around the city. I am an active participant in the sailing, business economics and snow sports society.”

“I was born in Milan, Italy, and that is where I spent most of my life. My family roots link me back to Portugal, which I feel to be my fatherland. I am currently studying Management with Leadership at the University of Exeter, where I have also founded the Portuguese Society. The best thing about the city of Exeter for me is the possibilities it can offer, although it has been a big change for me - coming from Milan.”

“I finished my MSc. in Money & Banking here in Exeter last year and, simply put, loved the city and its international face and people so much, and fortunately so got into the PhD program in Economics with the prospect of handing in my thesis in September 2012. Beside being a PhD student, athletics, cross-country running and fitness in general take up much of my time.”

“I'm June. I'm doing a masters in International management. I come from Thailand where you can see from my photos. It's nice, isn't it? I love Thailand : ) Exeter is a small town round by mountains which make me feel like I stay at a resort somewhere. Because of this, I chose to study here.”

“My name is Li, Qizhen and I come from Beijing (People’s Republic of China), which is both the economic and political centre and the capital of the country.“

“It is my first year at the University of Exeter studying accounting and finance and last year I was in Bath where I took a foundation course. Exeter is a typical British city with an amazing academic atmosphere and the combination of classical and modern building styles in the city centre is quite impressive. I like photography so much I will use my scholarship to buy a professional camera in order to capture every wonderful moment around me and share with my friends to show the life in UK.”

“I am currently a 2nd year student, studying Business Economics. Within the University, i am president of the MotorSport Society, and I'm a regular player for Uriel, the University's Ultimate frisbee club. When not at University, I live in the Southampton area, and in my spare time, I enjoy watching and playing an array of different sports, as well as being interested in the world of entertainment, technology, and computer gaming.”
