Anticipation Guide

Knowing how the brain stores information can improve reading comprehension.Multiple modalities, choice, and socialization enhance attention and participation.Prediction, synthesis, visualization, and questioning improve reading comprehension. Students use similar metacognitive strategies for reading and listening.Standardized testing uncovered Interpretation and Analysis as an area of need.Data indicated that performance on open ended responses was a relative weakness.

AG is a great way to increase participation you can make it more intermediate by using words agree disagree or a likert scale- gets buy in. It is prediction and connection and helps create a purpose for reading (listening). Turn and Talk. Usually review at the end of the lesson but lets talk through it since is pretty cut and dry. 2Anticipation Guide

Knowing how the brain stores information can enhance learning.

Multiple modalities, choice, and socialization enhance attention and participation.

Prediction, synthesis, visualization, and questioning improve retention. Students use similar metacognitive strategies for reading and listening.Standardized testing uncovered Interpretation and Analysis as an area of need.

Data indicated that performance on open ended responses was a relative weakness.

Just want to highlight a few items how many said thumbs up to all. 3Guiding QuestionsWhat does data tell us about our students performance in reading?

How can we use brain based strategies to improve interpretation and analysis?

How can we use brain based strategies to improve open ended responses?

If you dont know where youre going, you might end up somewhere else.Toby Keith

Play audio first. Comes for Jim Knight. Will be used by the instructional coaches this year as a model. You may want to adopt it as well. Basically brain based strategies can improve ANY area because bbs increase active participation and active participation increases learning.4The Data Tells UsStrengthsNeedsInterpretation and Analysis (MAPS)Phonological Awareness (MAPS)Understand Fiction (PSSA Gr 5)Understand Nonfiction (PSSA Gr 3,4)Interpretation and Analysis (PSSA)Comprehension (MAPS)Open Ended Responses (PSSA)Understand Fiction (PSSA Gr 3,4)Understand Nonfiction (PSSA Gr 5)

You already know this. Its exciting to be able to celebrate our successes. We all worked hard to get the results that we did. There are some discrepancies thats expected 2 totally different tests. Weve been charged with focusing on 2 areas.5The Data Tells UsStrengthsNeedsInterpretation and Analysis (MAPS)Phonological Awareness (MAPS)Understand Fiction (PSSA Gr 5)Understand Nonfiction (PSSA Gr 3,4)Interpretation and Analysis (PSSA)Comprehension (MAPS)Open Ended Responses (PSSA)Understand Fiction (PSSA Gr 3,4)Understand Nonfiction (PSSA Gr 5)

Standards Eligible ContentAnchorsAnchorsLast year I was charged with sharing eligible content. This year I can stand here and absolutely know for certain that you have a great handle on the eligible content. Show highlighted verbs. This year Ive been asked to share literacy strategies. You already know the strategies. My only suggestion is to kick it up a notch to improve analysis and interpretation. How? 7

The highlighted verbs from the eligible content can be found in this chart and in other like the peacock. Same verbs as the Anchors. Same verbs as HOTS.8

The top half is where we need to put emphasis this year. We can do so by kicking our questioning up a notch. Also by having students generate questions and by incorporating these HOTS in reading journals no need to formulate practice prompts. Prompts (at some level) should be a part of daily journal entries. Take a minute to jot down a prompt for a read aloud story that you are using next week. Share it with your table.9Brain Based Checklist

Multi-modalChoice Socialization

Multi-modal music, video clips, anticipation guide, story lead ins the evoke emotional or personal connectionChoice text, vocabulary, follow up.Socialization MM does a great job of social skills, you could add cooperative learningHow can we hook students. How can we get them actively engaged. Multi modal Music/video clips/Anticipation Guide/ Predict based on prior knowledge/emotions feelings Ask how can we get the 5 senses involved?Choice Text/vocab/follow upSocialization MM does a great job of this/book in an hour/turn and talkInclude Freedom Writers video here. 14Connect
