Mayer Physics Department, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057 INTER-NOISE 88 details announced The secretariat of the 1988 International Conference on Noise Control Engineering has announced further details aboutscope and venue of IN- TER-NOISE 88. The meeting will take place30 Augustto 1 September 1988 in the Palais des Papes in the ancient city of Avignon. The technical sessions will include invitedand contributed presentations aswell asposter sessions. The courses generally run 4 days a week for 6 hours a day. The topics covered range from psychoacoustics, musical instrument digitalinterfacing, and numerical evaluations to synthesis algorithms. Var- ious hardware and software will be used in support of the lecture material. The staff conducting the courses comes mainly from the Centroand from otheruniversities or agencies in Italy. INTER-NOISE 88 details announced

The secretariat of the 1988 International Conference on Noise Control

Engineering has announced further details about scope and venue of IN- TER-NOISE 88. The meeting will take place 30 August to 1 September 1988 in the Palais des Papes in the ancient city of Avignon. The technical sessions will include invited and contributed presentations as well as poster sessions. An exhibit will be held in conjunction with the conference, featur- ing noise control and soundproofing equipment. In an effort to reduce the number of parallel sessions the French Scientific Committee will select pri- marily papers that deal with topics covered by the general theme of the INTER-NOISE 88, "The Sources of Noise."

The meeting is sponsored by I/INCE and is organized by the Indus- trial and Environmental Group of the French Acoustical Society, with J. Mattel acting as General Chairman. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 31 October 1987 and manuscripts must be received by 15 March 1988. Short courses on music and information theory to be held at the University of Padova

The Centro di Sonologia Computazionale of the University of Padova, Italy, has announced the titles and contents of nine short courses that will be conducted between July and November 1987 as part of the series "Corsi di Informatica Musicale." The courses generally run 4 days a week for 6 hours a day. The topics covered range from psychoacoustics, musical instrument digital interfacing, and numerical evaluations to synthesis algorithms. Var- ious hardware and software will be used in support of the lecture material. The staff conducting the courses comes mainly from the Centro and from other universities or agencies in Italy. Two conferences have been scheduled that will follow a recently intro- duced pattern by being held during weekends. The first of these conferences, Reproduced Sound 3, is sponsored by the Institute of Acoustics, in collabor- ation with AES, ASCE, EMAS, and APRS. It will be held at the Winder- mere Hydro Hotel, 5-8 November 1987. The technical sessions will start Friday and end Sunday afternoon with some time set aside for relaxation. The sessions will be concerned with the technical aspects of room, recording studio, and auditorium acoustics and noise control, speech reinforcement, loudspeaker development, electroacoustic music, and digital and other in- strumentation techniques. British Society of Audiology has new offices and officers

Earlier this year the British Society of Audiology held its Annual Gen- eral Meeting during which new officers were elected. The outgoing Chair- man, M. C. Martin, reported that A.M. Martin was elected Vice Chairman and N. C. Bland would succeed to the Chairmanship at the end of the AGM.

At about the same time the BSA moved its headquarters from Harvest House on London Road in Reading to new quarters. The new address of the BSA is 29 Auckland Road, Reading RG6 1NP, U.K.

China to host International Congress on Acoustics

The International Commission on Acoustics held its annual business

meeting earlier this year in Rome, Italy. A number of countries had submit- ted proposals to host the 14th ICA. The Commission decided to accept the invitation by China to hold the 1992 ICA in Beijing. No specific dates have been announced but it is anticipated that the Congress will be held in late August or early September.

The Commission also reported that preparations for the 13th ICA, to be held 24-31 August 1989 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, appear to be well on schedule.

Swiss Acoustical Society expands scope of meetings

Starting this fall, the Swiss Acoustical Society annual meetings will be expanded to last 2 days instead of the traditional 1 full day. This new sched- ule will make it possible to incorporate 2 half-days of technical papers pro- grams, in addition to business meetings and technical tours. The first meet- ing that follows this new format is scheduled to be held 22-23 October 1987 in Freiburg, Switzerland. Information is available from A. Lauber, Swiss Acoustical Society, P.O. French University honors American acoustician In a ceremony on 17 March 1987, the Universit• du Havre awarded an

honorary Doctorate of Science to Herbert 'Oberall of The Catholic Univer- sity of America. The award was presented in recognition of Professor Ober- all's development of the "resonant scattering theory," which he and his co- workers, Lawrence Flax and Louis Dragonette first published in 1978 [J. Acoust $oc. Am. 63, 723 (1978) ].
