This conference will be held in Ancona, Italy, 13-14 October 1983. It is designed to offer an opportunity to exchange ideas between musicians, re- searchers, teachers, and others working in the interdisciplinary field of mu- sic and information sciences. One of the topics of the conference will be "music and computers." Contributed papers, posters, exhibitions, and in- formal debate sessions will be part of the program. Acoustics meetings in Norway

Norway will be hosting three acoustical events within the period of about one year. The first of these meetings will be the annual meeting of the Norwegian Acoustical Society which has been scheduled for Trondheim in October or November 1983. This will be followed by the Congress of the Scandinavian Acoustical Societies, 13-15 June 1984. This congress is to take place at Trondheim in the Royal Garden Hotel which, at this writing, has not been built yet. The last of the three meetings, the Congress of the Federation of Acoustical Societies of Europe (FASE) is planned for 21-24 August 1984 at Sandefjord. Institute of Acoustics (U.K.) awards Medals for 1983

The Institute of Acoustics awards the Rayleigh Medal and the A. B. Wood Medal and Prize each year to outstanding acousticians either in the United Kingdom or in North America. This year's awards went to two scientists from the USA. The Rayleigh Medal was awarded to Professor Eugene J. Skudrzyk of the Pennsylvania State University for his many acti- vities in research, teaching, consultancy, and other professional contribu- tions which have taken place in many countries and have involved many disciplines within acoustics. The A. B. Wood Medal and Prize was awarded to Dr. Peter Mikhalevski, Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, Wash- ington, DC. This is the first time a Naval Officer has received the award, and it is for his distinguished contributions to acoustics that the Institute of Acoustics presents this Medal and Prize to him.

Ultrasonic Society of India--An update

According to a report received from V. R. Singh, the General Secretary of the Ultrasonic Society of India, a workshop on "Ultrasonic Therapy and Ultrasonic Power Measurement" was held earlier this year at the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the significance of calibration procedures of ultrasonic apparatus used in various therapeutic applications. The meeting brought together physicians, physicists, and engineers. The participants had come from India as well as from Europe. Two main sessions were held on (a) the therapeutic effects of ultrasound and (b) the measurement of parameters relevant to ultrasonic therapy. The presentation of the papers was followed by a panel discussion which resulted in a number of recommendations aimed at the training of physicians in calibration and practical use of ultrasonic therapeutic equip- ment, the development of useful power measurement apparatus, studies of bioeffects, and better coordination between international societies who are already working on these problems.

Future activities of the Society include events it sponsors or cosponsors in India. Some of these events are listed in the Calendar--see last item in this column.
