TRANSCRIPT
Danish and American scientists honored by British acousticians
Acoustics '85, the spring conference of the Institute of Acoustics, was held in April at York University. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the R. W. B. Stephens Lecture which was given by Leif Bj6rn6 of the Technical University of Denmark. Another highlight was the award of the 1985 Rayleigh Medal to Peter Westervelt of Brown University and his delivery of the Rayleigh lecture.
The A. B. Wood Medal and Prize was awarded during the Interna- tional Conference on Scattering Phenomena in Underwater Acoustics to Timothy Stanton of the University of Wisconsin, who also presented the traditional invited lecture at the conference.
Institute of Acoustics (U.K.) awards 1984 IOA diplomas
About 100 candidates have qualified in 1984 for the award of the IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. In order to receive the diploma, suitably qualified persons enroll in one or two year part-time acoustics and noise control courses offered by 14 colleges and universities in the U.K. In June of each year candidates present themselves for examinations in general principles of acoustics, noise control, and two more topics selected from building acoustics, instrumentation, law and administration, noise control engineering, transportation noise, and vibration control. The candidate also has to complete a full-scale experimental or theoretical project.
Approximately 200 candidates sit for examinations each year, with the largest fraction of participants Environmental Health Officers. The entire program is supervised and staff, as well as facilities, are accredited by the Education Committee of the Institute of Acoustics.
IUPAP-ICA adds new associate members
The president of the International Commission on Acoustics (ICA), H. Myncke of Belgium, has announced that J. Zwislocki (USA) and E. Shaw (Canada) have been appointed associate members of the ICA. Both appoin- tees are Fellows of the Society. A proposal to appoint a Chinese acoustician as associate member will be considered at the next meeting of the Commis- sion, which will take place in Oslo.
Acoustical Association of Brazil moves HQ
The Associag3o Brasileira de Acfistica (ABRAC) has elected Alberto Vieira de Azevedo as its new president. At the same time the address of the association has changed to Av. Alvorada 2150, Bloco B, Grupo 225/226, Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 22700.
12th ICA sets abstract submission deadline
The organizers of the 12 International Congress on Acoustics (Tor- onto, 24-31 July 1986) have announced that authors wishing to submit a contributed paper for oral presentation at either the 12th ICA or any of the associated Symposia should send a 100 word abstract to the Secretariat before 31 July 1985. The address of the Secretariat is P.O. Box 123 Station Q, Toronto M4T 2L7, Canada.
