    3 HowtouseMARSAniMap

    3.1 WhatisMARSTheMARSFSapplicationisdesignedtosupportdecisionmakerstoassesscasestudyspecific

    transportandlandusestrategies.TheMARSFSisasimpletousepushbuttoninterfacefortheMARS

    landusetransportmodel.Theapplicationusesasetofcommandstogiveuserssimplifiedaccessto

    themodel.Totheuser,theMARSFSappearsasaseriesofbuttons,menus,orasequenceofscreens

    allowinghimorhertouseandanalyzetheMARSmodelinastraightforwardandmeaningfulway.

    Decisionmakerscanthemselvestryouttheirpoliciesandseetheconsequencesimmediately.

    TonavigatethroughMARSFSyouhavetooperatetheappropriatebuttons,justlikeinanyother

    Windowsapplication.

    3.2 UsingMARSFSStartofthemodelreaderSWintheWindows"Start" "Programs" "VENSIM" "VENSIMModelReader"

    IntheModelReaderclickon"File"andselect"open"SelectfileMARSFScitynameversionnumber.vpa"pressenter.

    TheVENSIMModelReaderopensthemodel;themodelopensalso2EXCELfileswhichcontaincasestudyspecificdata.Itispossibletolookwhichinputdataaredefinedforthecasestudy.Tosetupthesystemexpect30secondsloadingtime.

    Attention:datacanbealteredintheEXCELfilestodefinenewscenarios,itmustbementionedthatthisshouldonlybedonebyexperiencedMARSusers.

    3.5 SimulatethemodelWhenselecting"SimulatetheModel"awindowopenswhereallimplementedpolicyinstrumentsareshown.

    ThepolicyinstrumentsarecasestudydependentinFigure5theintheLeedscasestudyavailablepolicyinstrumentsareshownintotalthereare19differentpolicyinstruments.

    TherearedifferentpoliciesforeachmodeimplementedwithintheMARSmodelandcanbesimulatedusingtheMARSFSThefollowinglistwillgiveyouanIdeawhatispossibletotestwithinMARS(attentionthelistisnotcomprehensiveandiscasestudydepending):

    SlowModes

    Ifyouthinkofimplementingpedestrianzonesorbicyclelanes;youcaninputhowmuchofthezonewillbepedestrianized.Thiswillalsolengthenthedistancetoorfromtheparkingplace.

    PublicTransport

    Decreaseorincreasebusspeeds,busfaresorthebusfrequency.

    Car

    Chargecarsandmotorcyclesiftheyenterthecordon,changetaxesandcostsofacarpurchase,offercarsmoreorlessinfrastructure,whichhasinfluenceonthespeed,changethefeesforcarparkingandchangethepricesforfuel.

    Assoonasthedesiredpolicyleversareset,thesimulationofthemodelcanbeinvokedbypressingtheSIMULATEbutton.

    Thestructuretoinputapolicyinstrumentisalwaysthesameasshownhereforthepolicyinstrument"TeleWork"(leftcolumn).

    Ausercandefinethestartvalue(=percentagechange)oftheshareofteleworkersforastartyearbydraggingtheslidertothedesiredvalueorbykeyinginanumericvalueintheboxbelowtheslidertool.Additionalanusercandefineastartyearinwhichthepolicyinstrumentstarttoworkbykeyinginavalueintheboxontherighthandsideoftheslidertool.

    Thesamecanbedoneforanendyearinwhichthepolicyinstrumentsstaysconstantfortherestofthesimulationtime.

    Thisgraphiccanbeobtainedbyclickingonthe"PolicyGraph"Button.Itshowstheteleworkingpolicyprofilewheretillyear5theshareofteleworkersis0,inyearfivethesharegoesupto10%andincreasestilltheendyear20to60%andstaysthenconstantfortherestofthesimulation.

    Theusercandefineanycombinationofpolicyinstruments.Afterfinishingthisprocesstheuserhastoclickonthe"SIMULATE"buttonandthesimulationstarts.Inthecasetherunalreadyexists,theuserwillbeaskedeithertooverwritetheexistingrunortocreateanewone.Theusershouldnametheruninthatwaythathelatercanrememberwhichpolicycombinationhehastested.Importantisherethattheusershouldnotoverridethe"DoNothing"runsincethisrunisusedtocomparethenewcreatedrunwiththeDoNothingscenario.

    Thedurationofthesimulationdependsonthecomputersystemandwillbesomewherearound45seconds.AfterthesimulationisfinishedadialogwindowpopsupandaskstheuserifhewantstocreateanAniMapoutputfile.Byclickingthe"yes"buttonoraftersomesecondstheAniMapinputfilewillbecreatedandstoredintherightsubdirectory(..\AniMapMARS\Leeds\anidata\runname.js).

    Afterthesimulationisfinishedtheusercannavigatethroughthedifferentoutputwindowstoexplorethebehaviorofthemodelovertimeregardingthetestedpolicycombination.Severaloutputwindowsareavailable,wherethedevelopmentofdifferentindicatorsovertimeisshown.Allthesegraphsortablescanbecopiedintotheclipboardbyclickingthe"ExporttoClipboard"buttonandcansoimportedinanyotherapplication(suchasWord,Excel,etc).

    Sinceitisnotpossibletopreparepredefinedgraphsforallmodelvariablesaspecialtoolis

    implementedwithintheMARSFSsoftware.Thistoolallowstheusertoselectanyvariableused

    withinthemodelandtodisplaythedevelopmentofthesevariablesovertime,eitherasagraphoras

    atable.Thisfeaturealsoenablestheusertodisplayandexportinformationforacertainrangeof

    zones,forspecificmodes,orforspecifictrippurposes,etc.

    Bypressingthebutton"ReturntoMainMenu"anewsimulationcanbesetup.

    4 AniMapAniMapisapieceofsoftwarewhichcanbeusedtoviewmoviesregardingthespatialdevelopmentofcertainindicatorsovertime.

    TostartAniMaptheuserhastodoubleclickonthefile"Index.html"whichislocatedinthedirectory..\AniMapMARS\casestudyname,inourcase..\AniMapMARS\Leeds.BydoingthisnormallytheWindowsExplorershouldopenandloadtheAniMapSW.ImportantisherethatthesecuritysettingoftheexplorermustbesetinthatwaythatActiveXcontrolscanbeexecuted.

    Bytickingallthecheckboxesbelow"show"ontherighthandmenuthreegraphsofthecasestudyareaaredisplayed.Bypressingthe"step+"buttonitispossibletomoveforwardintimeyearbyyear.Bypressingthe"run+"buttonthedevelopmentovertimefortheselectedvariablesisshownasamovie.Bydoubleclickingonanyzoneinthemapadetailedlistforthisspecificzonecanbeobtained.
