HOWTO: Install COMAND in a facelifted CLK cabriolet

Detailed below are the steps I took to install COMAND into my facelifted A208 CL!20

    cabriolet"

A short note on the type of COMAND to obtain#

Always$ if at all possible %et the newest COMAND for yo&r type of'ehicle" (he installationwill be a lot easier if yo&r &nit was desi%ned foryo&r type of car" I obtained the A208 820 ))8* &nit which is the latestone a'ailable for a 208CL" (here are others"

(here is a &sef&l article on COMAND installs showin% the rele'antCOMAND part n&mbers

    here#http+,,www"ibe-"co"&k,mbst&ff,.etrofittin%/20Comand"htm

efore startin% on this pro1ect it is best to obtain all the partsthat yo& are likely to need"In addition to yo&r COMAND &nit yo& will need the followin%#

    A recent (eleatlas Na'i%ation disk www"na'shop"com3Model year 04 &pdate CD if yo&r &nit hasnt %ot it already" Optional b&t recommended3

    567 Antennae I recommend yo& %et the %en&ine article not a copy36arts to make &p a C2 connector

    6arts to make a C4 connector if yo& will be addin% in a CD chan%er

    solderin% iron

    Len%th of wire only re&ired if yo& do not ha'e a wire in 6in4 of yo&r A connector3"small hacksaw

    9ire c&tters.adio remo'al keys

    7hort 6hillips screwdri'er

I started by remo'in% the A&dio40 Cd that I had in the 'ehicle and the little trinket holderbeneath the &nit" (he A&dio40 come o&t 'ery easily with the two keys" Disconnect the

    aerial$the A$ and C connectors from the &nit and completely remo'e the &nit" (his lea'es

1&st the trinket holder to remo'e" :eel behind the trinket holder and there is a plastic l&%which clipsonto the &nderside of the plastic di'ider between the two din slots" I snappedmine off as it was a 'ery ti%ht fit"

Ne-t we ha'e to remo'e the plastic di'ider to make the two din slots one do&ble din si;e" I

&seda 1&nior hacksaw foir this" (ake %reat care not to dama%e the s&rro&ndin% trim whenyo& do this"

.emo'e yo&r %ear knob otherwise yo& wont be able to slid the COMAND &nit into place"

Ne-t we need to remo'e the %lo'e bo-" (here are fo&r screws holdin% this in place" (wo on

the top of the inside and two on the bottom of the inside"

of where the COMANDwill sit" If like me yo& ha'e the 567 e-tension cable which con'ertsthe connector from the co>a-type to the type that fits the COMAND then yo& will need to

caref&lly store this e-cess cablesomewhere behind the COMAND" Make s&re there are nometal ob1ects obstr&ctin% the recei'er as thiswill se'erely affect satellite reception" Do not

    replace the %lo'e bo- yet"

    9e now need to make &p o&r C2 connector":&ll 6in assi%nments can be fo&ndhere# http+,,&sers"pandora"be,miata,doc&me"""6in?Layo&t"doc9ith a dia%ram showin% the connectors

    here# http+,,&sers"pandora"be,miata,doc&me"""schl&splan"1p%

I &sed the pins i=d ordered and crimped and soldered pins @$8$* and 40" I then assembled

the C2connector by slidin% the one part into the other"My car had a C connector with the two CAN7 wires connected to pins 4 and 2" On my car

theseare colo&red lack and lack,9hite" C&t both these off$ notin% which one was in whichposition"

On mine the lack one was in pin 2 of the C pl&% Canb&s LO3 and the lack, white one wasinpin 4 of the C pl&% Canb&s BI3" 7older the black wire to pin 8 of the new C2 connector"

7olderthe black, white wire to pin * of the C2 connector" If yo& ha'e any other wires in yo&r

    C connectorthen yo& can either 1&st lea'e them connected on the C pl&% which we willlea'e in behind the &nitor yo& can in'esti%ate where they %o on the C4 , C2 connector" Isoldered a wire to my C2 pin40 sothat I can later add a CD chan%er" C2 pin 40 is re&ired

    for this" I also soldered a wire to C2pin @" this is re&ired for the speed p&lse" 9itho&t ityo&r COMAND wont &pdate yo&r position asyo& dri'e" If yo& ha'e a wire in pin 4 of yo&r A

connector$ then yo& need to brid%e that wire acrossto pin @ of the C2 connector so thatboth C2 pin@ and A pin 4 are connected to that wire" If like me3yo& do not ha'e a wire in A

pl&% pin 4 then yo& are %oin% to ha'e to tap into the speed p&lse wirewhich is locatedwithin the passen%er side on .BD cars3 sill"

    Only perform this ne-t section if yo& DON( ha'e a wire connected to 6in 4 of the A pl&%"

.emo'e the sill by %ently prisin% it &p" 6&ll a short section of the door pillar trim off andremo'ethe plastic trim from the footwell sec&red with a sin%le screw and two clips3" (his

Ne-t we need to locate the speed p&lse wire" On my car this is colo&red %reen, black and

    was connectedto a lar%e bl&e connector#

Ne-t we need to e-pose some of the copper in this wire and connect a len%th of new cable

to it" I twistedmine on and soldered it" Mask this 1oint &p and ro&te the cable back &p theside of the footwell$across and behind the %lo'e bo- to the rear of the COMAND" .eplace all

the footwell and 7ill trim in thecorrect order"

    Ne-t we insert pl&% A$ pl&% and o&r new C2 connector" Note we do not &se C4 &nless weha'e a CD chan%er" I=ll co'er that another time when I='e installed mine

9ith these connectors in place$ pl&% yo&r antennae in to the rear of the COMAND" Ditto theaerial"

"ou should purchase the part starting with the correct code for your carotherwise the catch mechanism will be wrong, the gyroscope angle will bewrong, and at a minimum it wont wor$ until a M% dealer has re#coded it,and in fact it may not wor$! This is because different units e;pect the (peed, then you need to purchase the e;act unit that would ha)e been in the

car, or a M class unit consult your M% parts department for the part number! The older cars do not ha)e CAN bus connected to the radiocommand =andnor does the M class>!

Also, if you are installing in a M' =or a car not designed for COMAND> youmust by a M' unit although some *013 C'4 units can be made to function!+ belie)e that the new C'4C#*agen units may be interchangeable, but theywill only fit in Mercedes %en& )ehicles as they ha)e non D+N shaped frontpanels! +t may be that the speed signal is on the A connector on the #*agen

unit, but they may be able to be coded to beha)e li$e a CC'4 unit! The ('unit is a different shape!/ere is an incomplete list of COMAND unit part numbers note that thisincludes COMAND 0!7 systems for the (C' =upto M"0110> which ha)e )erydifferent wiring to that described in this document!
