Instagram is... ... the future of photography. ... all food and cat pics. ... worth $1,000,000,000. Not really, but… Instagram is simple. That's why it's special.

ProCamera

Difficulty Level: 1 Use it for: Shooting all the time. Great basic toning, exposure, cropping and straightening tools. Protip: Use either volume button for the shutter release.

Page 13: Instagram Lecture by KPCC's Grant Slater

Hipstamatic

Difficulty Level: 1 Use it for: Lo-mo shooting from the hip. Random acts of photographic serendipity. Experimenting with lenses and film to find new looks. Protip: This is not the best app for daily photography because of its lack of control. But it can be fun.

Camera+

Difficulty Level: 1 Use it for: A good backup camera and it's really useful Clarity filter. Protip: The Clarity filter can help fix a backlit picture really quickly. It evens out even some bad images, but it has a limit.

SquareReady Pro

Difficulty Level: 1.5 Use it for: when you don't want to use a square image. This creates a white background that matches Instagram. Looks great! Protip: For quickest results, pinch your image to make it a bit smaller and then click on the bottom right button with four arrows to center it.

Difficulty Level: 2 Use it for: Creating collages of your images. You can pick templates and then add images one by one. Drag the bars to resize the windows. Protip: Make sure to select a border that matches the color of the filter border in your final product!

Pic Frame

BlendCam

Difficulty Level: 3 Use it for: Stacking images on top of each other with transparency to create a double exposure effect. Protip: Different blending modes produce dramatically different results.

Page 19: Instagram Lecture by KPCC's Grant Slater

Lo-Mob

Difficulty Level: 2 Use it for: Old-timey and vintage filters with an array of borders much broader than Instagram. Watch out for overuse. Protip: You have to choose a filter that matches the shape of your picture. If it's square, pick a square filter.

FilterStorm

Difficulty Level: 4.5 Use it for: Everything you would use Photoshop for on a PC, only with your thumbs. Protip: This app is the best way to add masks and layers to your images so you only change certain parts. If you get the hang of it, it's awesome.

Decim8

Difficulty Level: ∞ Use it for: Adding digital noise like stacked ProTools plug-ins to your images. Like Radiolab for Instagram. Protip: There is no try. Only do. ?

#OtherApps • PS Express Photoshop dumbed down for your phone. • Wood Camera Not the best camera but a fun assortment of filters. • Noir If vignettes are your thing, this is your app. • ScratchCam Add imperfections to photos so they look, you know, old. • Pic Grungr Same thing as ScratchCam, but more punk rawk. • 645 Pro Ridiculously intricate camera app that can do anything. • Hueless Black and white only camera. For purists and Dick Van Dyke. • Diptic Another collage app with a few different features.
