Introduction

As an inspirational speaker I am often amazed by the power that lies

in a single quotation to transform someone’s life. Let me illustrate

this by means of a true story shared by my aunt’s uncle, Mr.

Surendra Pai, in his own words.

Around 25 years back, I was posted in USA as Regional Purchase

Manager (USA & Canada), Air-India. One day Mr. Vidya Shankar

came to see me in my office at New York. While sharing the story of

his misfortune he said, “I am an aeronautical engineer from

Bangalore. But my bad luck is that I have to work as a sales person

in a company which deals in the business of buying and selling of

aircraft spares,” he had come to USA with the hope of making a

career in aeronautics, but he could not get a good job in his line.

I shared a quote that I had read somewhere with him.

“You should like the job you do and do the job that you like.” Thereafter I returned to Mumbai, India. It was exactly after five

years that I got a call from Mr. Vidya Shankar.

“I am in Mumbai and would like to see you” he said, I went to meet

him in the hotel he was staying in. He presented me with an

expensive gift and said “I remember your words which you told me

when I had come to see you in your office in New York. As per your

advice I started taking full interest in aircraft spares. Today I am an

expert in spares. Part numbers are no more dead numbers for me.

They talk to me. I can make out which system they belong to. Every

alphabet and number has a meaning for me. I became so much

involved in my job that today I have started a company of my own.

All this was possible because of your words which have become a

source of inspiration for me.”
