Live Your Dream 2009

Tuesday August 25th Hilton Birmingham Metropole

A bright futurePresident Anna Segatti welcomed everybody and spoke confidently of a bright future despite the difficult economic conditions. “Sales Leaders are the secret weapon for the company’s success. We work as a partnership; at the centre of everything is the shared desire to service, contact and care for Representatives and customers.”

Results and plansHosts Richard Pinnock (Executive Director Sales) and Paul Stephens (Sales Leadership Development Manager) spoke about the current business results and the plans to help your businesses to go forward. The strategy for this year will focus on TEAM:

Training• Developing a strategy for meetings and providing consistent

training wherever you are in the UK. • Better recognition possibilities through accreditation and the

possibility of providing business training and qualifications.• Plans to hold two larger training events rather than the Sales

Leader Roadshows - Blackpool 1st March and Swindon 3rd March.

Earnings• Changes to improve the Fast Start Bonus. • Revamping the commission structure – for full details check

out the website soon. • Continue to develop incentives and bonus opportunities.

Affiliation• National SMA (Spatial Mapping Application) should be

available by the end of the year.• Develop the Sales Leader Council – currently looking for new

members.• Develop and provide more information on webcasts and video

presentations.

Management• Taking the Business Guide online – see story on page 6.• Making changes to processes and providing more

information on incentives and events to allow for better time management.

• Avon Leadership Model (ALM) – online management tool giving visibility of three generations and greater opportunities to communicate and work better and smarter.

Sales Leader Events

Live Your Dream 2009Personal storiesThroughout the day Sales Leaders gave their top tips, advice and personal experiences via video and in person. Executive Sales Leader Hannah Cooke and Senior Executive Anna Granger spoke with Region Manager Eddie Silcock (right)about how Sales Leadership has changed their lives. They have both taken the step to leave full time employment and concentrate on Sales Leadership.

Stop, think and reflectMotivational speaker Paul McGee gave a powerful presentation about how we look at our lives. Known as the ‘SUMO’ man, Paul’s message to ‘Shut Up and Move On’ is not an aggressive demand, but more a way to deal with the challenges and issues that we may face in our business and personal lives. You can learn more about Paul’s philosophy and experiences at www.thesumoguy.com

Training break-out sessionsDuring the event there was the opportunity to learn more about new products in Fragrance, Make-up and Jewellery as well as pick up tips and advice on selling and prospecting.

“I was amazed and shocked, it was a fantastic feeling at being recognised for my achievement. My hard work has really paid off especially with the great support and encouragement I have had from my team and my Business Development Manager Judith Perrett. The professionalism and hard work of Sales Leaders was obvious at Live Your Dream and has certainly inspired me to achieve even higher goals in the coming year. To everyone I would say live your dream - it will come true!” Julia Buettner

Highest Active Representative Growth (Established) below1 Gail and Brian Reynolds2 Stuart and Lorraine Poulter3 Jane Hughes

“I had an absolutely fabulous time at my very first Live Your Dream event! To have the opportunity to meet other Sales Leaders and people I have only ever seen in In-sight magazine was amazing. I was thrilled and surprised to receive my awards; achieving my goal of Executive level in a year was enough for me personally, but to receive recognition on top of that was an incredible feeling! When my name was called out I thought my heart was going to pop out of my chest!”

I feel very privileged to work with an amazing group of people - a great upline team and my own downliners, who I am very proud of. Without them I could never have achieved Executive status and so I would like to thank them all for their support, dedication and hard work. I would also like to thank my ASM Deena Smith for her input and support.

I do believe that if you have a definite goal, and a realistic timescale in which you want to achieve it, you can do anything. I completely believe in the Sales Leadership opportunity and know that being dedicated and excited is catching - people just can’t help but want to work with you if your enthusiasm shows.”

“When I went up on stage I was a bag of nerves, emotional and excited all in one! On winning the Highest Active Representative growth award (the first time I was called up to go on stage) my team had to talk me into leaving the table I was so nervous! I only do Sales Leadership part time two and half days a week, so it took a lot of determination and planning to achieve. However I would say never give up at the first hurdle as tomorrow could bring you your next downliner! And set your downliners goals and incentives to win on top of the other incentives on offer, giving them two chances to win!” Jane Hughes

Michelle Clark, who had achieved success earlier in the evening in the Super League got an even bigger surprise when her name was draw out to win the Mazda MX5. After celebrating on stage she was more overwhelmed when she got behind the wheel! Here she’s congratulated by fellow Sales Leader Lynda Phillips.

“Firstly I was very surprised by the nomination as I knew this alone was a huge honour. But you can’t imagine my surprise when it was my name up there on the screen as the winner! I just couldn’t believe it - my legs got a bit soft! I had joked with Richard Pinnock earlier that it would probably sound funny to hear Anna Segatti, with her Italian accent, pronounce some really difficult polish name...and then when my team came on screen they were almost all Polish!

I would like to thank everyone for working so hard this year: Bozena Szewczyk who got to Executive level, Teresa Sliwinska, Natalia Skala-Puch and Joanna Kalmuczak who all got to Advanced and Magdalena Patelka who is not directly in my team, but with whom I work closely. It was so nice to see my name there, but it was and is a team effort and as I said to them ‘Don’t congratulate me - congratulate yourselves as it is your success’.

It was really good feeling when fellow Sales Leaders were coming to congratulate me. This is a great privilege and honour, especially when taking over from Gail and Brian Reynolds who won last year. Winning the ‘Team of the Year’ is not only great recognition, but in a way responsibility as my team needs to get ‘bigger, faster, stronger’ to live up to the prize and prove that it was not a random choice, especially with more and more competition in Sales Leadership every year.” in-sight6

The Forum was launched in 2003 to give Sales Leaders somewhere to connect with each other. The community has thrived; friendships have been made and problems solved.

Sales Leader John Blackmore told In-sight about how he uses the Avon Forum:“I use the Forum to help other people and find out what other Sales Leaders are doing. I’ve picked up some useful ideas such as making customer and Representative data safe by keeping it on a secure, password protected spreadsheet. It would be good to have other facilities such as the ability to upload and download documents, having categories for the different threads and maybe a chatroom.” Log on to the website and click “My Forum” to find out more.

What is a Call-In?Throughout the UK casual get togethers are being held by Area Sales Managers and Sales Leaders to promote the Avon business; they are a great opportunity to meet people, whatever stage they are at and whatever their knowledge of Avon. Open to everyone, people can pop in and out whenever they want to learn more, try products and meet Representatives.

At the Call-in In-sight attended in Bedford recently Erena Shaw, Senior Executive Sales Leader, gave an informal talk about her experiences of Sales Leadership and her early days as a Representative. As she said “Everybody has the chance and the opportunity to take the business as far as you can go.” In the five years she has been a Sales Leader she has been able to take her business to Senior Executive level and is looking at earnings of around £40K this year. The Call-In was a great opportunity for everyone to ask her how

she has achieved this and what she has learnt.Every session is different so ask your ASM when the next one is in your Area.

Sales Leader visits Breakthrough Research CentreAs a committed supporter of the Breast Cancer Crusade Sales Leader Kay Walker-Muff was recently invited, alongside other Avon employees, to tour the Breakthrough Research Centre and meet the Dr Avon’s. The visitors were able to see for themselves the vital work that the Crusade’s fundraising supports. Kay has raised thousands of pounds for the cause and is a great ambassador for the Crusade; she was awarded the President’s Award at last year’s Live Your Dream event.

Roz Walker and Pat Ashmore achieved 4th and 5th places respectively in the Super League at the Live Your Dream event. They won all expenses paid two night theatre breaks.

“I’m gobsmacked! What a fabulous event. I came fourth which doesn’t seem possible seeing as I’ve been up against the ‘top’ people as it were. Still, I hope I’m a good example for other Sales Leaders to see what’s achievable. Over the moon!” Roz Walker in-sight

Sales Leadership – the business for you

“ My name is Pat Ashmore and I’m based in sunny Sheffield in South Yorkshire. I have worked with different network marketing based companies in the past, jobs that have allowed me to live fairly comfortably. However it always felt like something was missing; I was working all hours for companies that promised much, but not getting a lot out of it.

At the end of January this year I began to reflect on my experiences, and what I had learned over the past few years. At the ripe ‘young’ age of 62 I knew that it was now or never if I was to find the right business for me!

My dream has always been to help to provide a special future for myself, my husband and our 23 year old daughter who is just out of university. I really didn’t want her to work as hard as I have all my life.

Experience has taught me that to be successful I had to find a business that offered:

1 Quality, value for money products

2 A low start up fee to help to build a team

3 Opportunities for the more ambitious

4 A solid, well known brand

Avon ticked all of these boxes!I have an amazing team of approximately 150 team members and have built some

wonderful friendships. I have enjoyed great financial opportunities and been able to gradually grow my income. It takes time to build your team, and many people are not willing to wait or put in a reasonable amount of energy and enthusiasm. But if you are prepared to follow what works the rewards can be wonderful!

Did I make the right choice by changing direction and joining Sales Leadership? Absolutely... and categorically... yes!. 100%.Do I still look for the “Golden Opportunity?

Absolutely... and categorically... no! 100%”

A day in the life of

Would you like to be in this article in a future issue? E-mail

I was a Representative many years ago so I knew a little about Avon. I’m a diabetic with two small children so finding a job that was flexible to allow for them and my medical appointments was proving to be a big challenge.

I joined as a Representative in January this year when my youngest child Sam was two months old. Becoming a Representative did help to work off my baby bump through lots of walking with the buggy! My eldest child Ben, is 8, and loves helping me deliver brochures and putting them with into bags! After a couple of campaigns my upliner Jane Hughes suggested Sales Leadership and I’ve not looked back since! Jane has offered me amazing support – I couldn’t have done it without her.

Each day I contact my Representatives if necessary to check if they’re ordering or have any problems. I check my e-mails regularly and seem to use Post-It-notes constantly! On a recruiting day I’ll have prepped how many brochures I need, along with routes and the relevant mail plan and area information for each applicant. I try to do one area a day, and work in general two days a week out and about. When I get home and the kids are in bed I apply for territories requested, add details onto my database and e-mail contacts and do paperwork.

I’m still new to Sales Leadership and I constantly seek advice from Jane and my ASM Sarah Thacker; they are great in helping me find leads and potential areas. I’ve built my team fairly quickly but thoroughly. Becoming a Sales Leader is not an easy journey; it requires a lot of time and effort and there are some rough

patches to get through. It also takes a while to pay off - patience is definitely a virtue, which I lack at times! I thought I’d make Advanced level in Campaign 11, and when I didn’t I was devastated; Representatives in one of my downliners teams had not placed orders or dropped out so my downliner didn’t qualify. I felt like I’d let her down and I have learned lessons in how to do things in the future. It’s a sharp learning curve.

However I’m very ambitious; I’m hoping to get to Executive level by Christmas. My dream is to provide my family with a financially stable environment and to be able to pay the bills. Support from my husband and children is vital; there have been a few arguments especially when I was at Sales Leader level, but I think they have been resolved. Eventually I’d like to move to a bigger, more comfortable house and for the general pressure to be lifted a little. Very humble dreams really.

What are my top tips? Get a Sat Nav if you work over a large area(s)! Also make sure you have a great package on your mobile phone. Keep in touch with your team regularly; be friendly and approachable and make sure they know they’re not on their own if they need help. Learn to judge when to go that extra mile for people. I have been let down but when that happens I shelve it as a mistake and move on. in-sight

Roz talks Sales LeadershipBuilding relationships is important, whether it be with your Representatives or Area Managers in the areas where you work. When we all work together we all benefit. Make sure that you set realistic goals that push you a little but not too much - you’re in this to have fun as well as earn money and what use is success if you’re too tired to enjoy it?I love the fact that what I put into Sales Leadership is reflected in what I get out of it. It’s a job I’m good at, I enjoy it and it works for me. I’m proud to be able to say that about what I do.

Sales Leader Council

Meet the Council – Operations and Events groupThe Sales Leader Council is made up of four sub groups. Each issue we have been talking with some of the members of the groups to see what they do. This issue we focus on the final group, Operations and Events; we spoke to Anna Granger (AG) and Julie Bradley (JB).

What have you been looking at recently? AG Rather than focusing on a particular project we have been able to give general feedback during Council meetings. We have had input on a variety of topics from incentives such as the Champions League, to Sales Leader stationary. JB We have helped with the planning for the Live Your Dream event and also the IMR application. Some of my team and I were lucky enough to have the opportunity to run a question and answer session with Paul Stephens and some of the Corby employees about our concerns and some possible solutions. It was very rewarding.

Why did you join the Sales Leader Council? What benefits have you had from being a member?AG I joined the Council this year as I have experience in a variety of roles (ASM, DSM, Senior Executive Sales Leader) which I hoped may be of some benefit. I am also a firm believer that if you want things to improve and develop it’s important to contribute. So many people just seem to sit about moaning that things aren’t right but it takes people to care and get involved in order to change things. JB Exactly, I feel that being a member of the

Council allows the coming together of many different ideas. As an individual it helps to develop our inner strength, so important towards a pathway to success for all. AG The other main benefit to me has been the opportunity to get to know other successful Sales Leaders. The group is made up of a variety of personalities from all over the UK; we have regional differences and differences in the way we run our business, but are all successful. I have

enjoyed getting to know and learning from the other Council members - I always leave the meetings feeling motivated and refreshed. JB Anybody out there who’s interested… ‘make yourself heard and give it a go!’ in-sight
