Dear readers,

“We have arrived and gained acceptance asa slabstock manufacturer!”– that is the head-line for the KÖPP team for 2015. Having putso much motivation, competence and heartand soul into our “rebirth” as a cellular rubbermanufacturer, we have seen extremely positiveresults this year.

And that’s not all – things look bright for thefuture as well. By installing new presses andheating ovens at our factory in Romania, wewill triple our production capacity at KoeppRomania even in the short term and we will beable to meet rising demand with ease.

Admittedly, growth in demand for our semi-finished cellular rubber products has been sodramatic that it exceeded our expectations –although, of course, we were always awarethat our combination of high quality and com-petitive prices would establish the reputationfor our products in the market.

Our ranks have also been swelled by moreexperts in foam. We have significantly expan-ded and reorganised our sales team.

In this edition of insight. I look forward tointroducing you to our internal and field staff, and our new Head of Sales & Marketing, AxelWynands.

We also have product news for you in thisinsight.: EPDM-SUW and EPDM-W. This addstwo (super) soft qualities to our range of cellularrubbers, for a wide variety of special applica-tions.

I wish all our readers health, happiness andsuccess for the coming year. It would be goodto meet you at K 2016, the plastics trade fairin Düsseldorf. You will find us, as ever, in therubber section – with a bigger stand this year.See you there!

Warm regards,

Achim Raab, Managing Director

It is true that we normally address insight.readers as business partners but as we areraising domestic water filters, the subjectis a bit closer to home.

In fact that was precisely the idea behindthe in-house staff training by our filterexperts Isabel Kalberg and Markus Peitz.Of course, it was also interesting for ourcolleagues to learn something about one ofour products, but the focus of this trainingwas its practical use. You will soon see justhow useful it was.

Actually many colleagues did not evenknow that they had a domestic water filter.Domestic water filters are used in all housesin Germany to remove solid particles thatare present in water when transferred fromthe waterworks to the consumer. Withoutthis filter, these solid particles would causedamage to household devices, such aswashing machines. To avoid this it is vitalto carry out regular maintenance on thefilter. The frequency required depends onthe level of dirt. For reasons of hygiene thefilter cartridges should be replaced at leastevery six months, or if the reduction inpressure is greater than 0.5 bar.

All you need to do is:

• Put a bucket under the filter• Close the gate valves before and after

the filter and open the vent valve• Unscrew the sleeve nut that fixes the

filter cup in place, remove the filter cupand rinse it

• Remove the filter cartridge (pull down)• Insert a new filter cartridge• Screw the filter cup back on

(check that the seal ring is in the right position to prevent any water damage)

• Slowly re-open the gate valves; close the vent valve if water comes out of it

Here is a tip from a sales manager whodid not want to be named: Never put abowl to catch water under your backwashfilter. If there is enough pressure the water splashes straight out of the bowl –sometimes spraying all over the wall.Unless, of course, you wanted to redecorateor you want to support your local painter.

Do you have any more questions aboutdomestic water filters and their main-tenance? Our experts will be glad to help.

A podium finishwith team spirit Bronze for the FOAM Experts at the Aachen Corporate Run

The 4th Aachen Corporate Run washeld on the 2nd October at the Hange-weiher. This event is now a fixture inthe KÖPP calendar, and every year ITengineer, André Stiebig, recruits a fewcolleagues to join him. Our team, the“FOAM Experts” started this time withsix passionate runners.

It was a bright autumn day, as always,as our colleagues brought their brightmood to a total of 7,000 runners. Ourteam agreed on a course length of4.63 km in advance. All that team spiritcould not go unrewarded –three of ourrunners reachedtheir goal in atime of under 20minutes, whichwas enough toensure an impres-sive 3rd place inthe overall ran-kings – congratu-lations!

In other sporting news, the traditionalATG Winter Run on 6th Decemberwas the latest challenge. Our team of“FOAM-Experts” was getting involvedtogether again and achieved a res-pectable result in the upper midfield. The run covered the distance of 18 kmand 100 metres of altitude from Vicht-bachtal, through the Forest of Aachen,to the ATG sports ground at the Cho-rusberg. Among more than 1.500 maleparticipants André Stiebig could gaina proud 95. place. Congratulations!

There are some sporting eventscoming up in 2016 as well. Perhaps afew of our female colleagues will begetting involved…

An expert forum entitled “Process-constant dosing technology for adhesiveand sealing systems” was held at ISGATECin Mannheim on 24/25 November. Specialists in sealing, adhesive and elastomer technology met up to exchangeinformation. As a supplier with over 15 years of experience, KÖPP was ofcourse a vital participant.

Which materials and which system technology are available today and whichdesign considerations need to be takeninto account in advance? Our FIP(F)G expert and Key Account Manager, Dr. RalfTahhan, dealt with this and other questionscompetently in his presentation, givingcomprehensive and practical answers. To show a fine-cell foam and its optimumair load, he sometimes used ketchup orchampagne bottles as visual aids.

In addition to our main formed-in-placeseal production facility in Bovenden, ourplant in Aachen is being used increasingly. To expand capacity, a third system from Rampf will be installed in Aachen in January. This represents an investment inquicker and more modern order processing for our customers.

Dr. Tahhan gave a striking demonstrationof the importance of groove shape for optimum seal results. It is equally importantto consider electromagnetic compatibility if possible fault sources must be shielded. In this case, the seal to be used betweenthe housing and the cover should be conductive. “You soon realise what a complicated subject it is, but with the right

advice it is quite manageable” explainedDr. Tahhan in one of his presentations.“1K or 2K seals are an alternative that is atleast as good as traditional seal systemsmade from cellular rubber or sponge rubber. However success depends on finding the ideal solution for the specific sealing requirement and then implementing it in a reliable and highly precise way. This requires plenty of experience in terms of consultancy, development and production.”

FIP(F)G seal systems are now used for awide range of applications. At the ISGATECforum KÖPP proved once again what awide range of options are available to themarket with impressive process reliability. Our experts will be happy to assist youwith your individual project.

A team leader who is a real team player

“The team is the key,” assures Wynands.“We can only achieve our ambitious aims if we all fit together like cogs.” That is whyhe believes his role as Head of Sales &Marketing goes beyond company strategy, with a strong focus on organisation. Hisdoor is always open, so he can help find aquick and uncomplicated solution to anydifficulties. “I also expect the same fromeveryone else. Anyone who has resourcesmust also make them available to their colleagues. We need to work together to besuccessful, for us and for our customers.”

He knows the international market

Axel Wynands is no stranger to the rubberand foam sector. His previous employer,Fecken-Kirfel, is a leading producer of cutting machines for processing cellularrubber and polyethylene. During his elevenyears at Fecken-Kirfel he worked withmany block-processing clients around theworld, and met them in person. Wynandsis confident that his experience can helpKÖPP make the transition from being a traditional company to an increasingly international concern.

Clear goals, an overall direction, excellent products and a team to shape the success of the company – these arethe reasons that persuaded Axel Wynands to take on newchallenges as Head of Sales & Marketing at KÖPP. “A successful company always measures itself in terms ofgrowth rates. At KÖPP you are not looking at a pedestrian2-3%. The goal is 10-15%, and that is entirely realistic. I am highly motivated to be a part of that” said the qualified engineer.

Cellular rubber

Not just a soft core

With its relatively low density of approx.80 kg/m³, EPDM-SUW is one of the lightestof the large-cell foams. With a degree ofhardness of 14-26° Shore 00 it is highlyelastic and at the same time soft. Thesequalities give it the desired property – anability to adapt highly precisely to its surroundings including a very wide rangeof structures. EPDM-SUW also unites twoimportant properties in one material quality:it has a good compression set with hightemperature resistance. This gives this product a clear advantage over comparablecompetitors, and you get the wholepackage – quality at a competitive price.

The real deal

Along with the SUW, EPDM-W (soft) isanother new development. “The originaldemand for this product came from theAsian market” explained Dr. Peine. With adensity of approx. 100 kg/m³, EPDM-W islighter than a classic EDPM, but it is still a high-quality technical foam. This productoffers our customers a high-quality alternative to the growing trend towardsmaterial blends. “These blends have a lowEPDM content and they generally includean EVA component, which means that they have limited temperature resistance. This is a problem that you do not have with pure EPDM-W” explained Dr. Peine. The counterparts to this material are only

on the market in small blocksizes. With standard

dimensions of 2,000 x 1,000 mm,

EPDM-W fromKÖPP has clearcommercial benefits for customers.

Not just standard

We can’t say it often enough – the pastyear has been extremely good for KÖPP in terms of production of our own cellularrubber qualities at our factory in Romaniaand international sales. Production of thestandard qualities is going full steam aheadand positive feedback from the marketconfirms the high quality of our materials. But of course, standard qualities are notenough for us. From our many years of experience we know that our customersoften have to deal with difficult sealingtasks, which require a special foam, e.g. if the material comes into contact withmoisture or water, or if there are large tolerances to overcome. “In these situationsour customers need a more resistant foamsystem” confirms Dr. Andreas Peine. “What they need is a very soft EDPM, but with good recovery.” With this marketrequirement in mind, the product develop-ment department at KÖPP Germany workedwith the production team in Romania tocome up with the perfect mixture for a new,super-soft foam: EPDM-SUW (super-soft).

An expert forum entitled “Process-constant dosing technology for adhesiveand sealing systems” was held at ISGATECin Mannheim on 24/25 November.
