How to start a Jaguar in only two days…… (Due to the restrictive parking policy at Arbutus Ridge, the subject XJR is stored on a friend’s acreage about three miles away.) Day 1 Get in Mustang and drive to where Jaguar is parked. Get out of Mustang and approach Jaguar. Discover that Jaguar keys were left at home. Get into Mustang and drive home. Get keys and return to Jaguar. Unlock Jaguar and get in. Turn key to “start” position. Think “Sound of Silence.” Go home and get big starting unit. Return to Jaguar. Hook up starting unit. Turn key. Notice more silence. Hook up charger. Go home. Return after suitable time has elapsed. Turn key. Il silen-zio again. Check battery voltage. Volts very scarce. Go home and start phoning around for a battery. Find one in Duncan. Sold on exchange basis. Go to Jaguar and remove battery. Go to Duncan. Buy new battery. Too late in day to continue the fun, so go home. Day 2 Make sure new battery is fully charged. Return to Jaguar and install battery. Turn key. Appropriate noises. Engine running! Go for drive.

Big picture: It is snowing as I work on the March Growler. X-Types are good in the snow. Small picture: The first armoured car robbery in North America happened 90 years ago near Pittsburgh, in March 1927. Paul Jaworski and his Flatheads Gang blew up the vehicle and made off with over $104,000.

(With a bit of help from Shakespeare and Steppenwolf) “Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious …” and it is officially Spring. At last. An unusually dull, wet and cold winter combined with a virus that affected almost everybody has made an unhappy beginning of the year for many of us. The wiser of our members escaped for warmer latitudes but those of us left behind have man-aged to gather several times socially and talk cars (and weather and viruses). We enjoyed visits to Silver Arrow and Jetstream and lunched together. We met in Esqui-malt and talked about cars in England. We Coffee Klatched indoors at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. I am always gratified by the varied experiences and knowledge of our members. Now the snowbirds are re-turning and the collectable cars are finding their way out of storage and we can soon drive without the seat heat on. We have many events planned for a full season so, “get your motor running, head out on the highway…”

Questionnaires

T his month we have asked our Membership Direc-tors Bob and Glenis Jackson, and Member at Large Bob Drew to fill out Telse’s Questionnaire.

Bob and Glenis (Bob) My first Jaguar: A 1954 Jaguar XK 120 DHC. We took our 6 month old son in a blue bassinet that just fit behind the seats and drove to our rustic lake side cabin just out-side of Prince George. No car seats then!

Bought where & when: 1974 in Richmond BC from a Canadian Pacific Airlines Body Mechanic. Current Jaguar: 1991 XJS - C I wish I had: Not sold the XK120 DHC for $3,800.00 in 1976. We had just bought our first house in Burnaby for $60,000.00, so needed the money. Favourite colour on a Jag: Carmine Red. If I didn't have a Jag, I would drive a: Lexus People say that you can categorize women by the contents of their purses (or men by the contents of their wallets)…let’s see what your glove compart-ment/console reveals about you: What are you hiding in your glove compartment and/or console: Black leather driving gloves that came with the car, insurance papers, tire gauge. Who else is allowed to drive your Jaguar(s): My wife Glenis. Last music played on your stereo: I replaced the bat-tery when I first got the car and have never re-entered the security code. (otherwise it would be 10CC). I got my last ticket for: Not wearing a seat belt. How often do you talk to your car: Once a year when I first take it our of storage. Just say a prayer that it will not burn up. Your unasked advice: I am a quiet person. *****************************************************************

Bob Drew’s first E-Type, photographed in Edmonton

Bob Drew

My first Jaguar: Early used Series 1 E-type Roadster, white. ( 1

st of two). Seduced by its appearance. And like a

mistress it was very rewarding, but needed a LOT of maintenance. Also attracted to advanced tech stuff like DOHC, spaceframe, monocoque section and inboard rear brakes. Replaced shortly after by a Series 1 with the detachable hardtop. Bought where and when: Edmonton, late 1960’s. Current Jaguar: F type S V8 convertible. I wish I had: A Mclaren P1 and a D-type (to share @ JOTI) Favourite colour on a Jag: Original BRG/cashmere beige. If I didn’t have a Jag, I would drive: Something mid-engine. People say that you can categorize women by the contents of their purses (or men by the contents of their wallets)…let’s see what your glove compart-ment/console reveals about you: What are you hiding in your glove compartment and/or console: Boring stuff: Reg. docs, pen & paper to record accidents, caused of course by the other driver, tire pressure gauge, soft cloth to wipe rain or spills off leather. Who else is allowed to drive your Jaguar: Family Last music played in your stereo: Seldom in car. Pre-fer listening to exhaust note thru the gears. At home, Joe Bonamassa; CSN, CCR, Grateful Dead. I got my last ticket for: Speeding in our Ticket-Me-Red F-type near the Rockies. Tried to lay a guilt trip on the officer, explaining that we were on the way to Lake Louise for our 40

th anniversary. Didn’t work. Still handed

me a ticket. But he did wish me a happy anniversary. How often do you talk to your car: When young, with my older British sports cars. Frequently discussed canine origin of the electrics or the Jag’s Moss transmission. Your unasked advice: Don’t give unsolicited advice. But since you ask: As a retired estate lawyer: You should prioritize your holdings: First, have a Car Fund, a Sail-boat fund, then a car repair fund, and less importantly, stuff like food and shelter. Live by the adage “You only go around the block once.” (If your English car will make it.) And when your spouse again asks that question, “How many cars do you need?” the standard reply always is: “Just one more than we have”. Although I also saw this advice online… “Get a new car for your wife. It’ll be a great trade! “

On February 19, our Prez & Prowl Chair, Graham Dar-by, led the first Prowl of the season from Tillicum Shop-ping Centre, along the Gorge, to Silver Arrow Cars’ facility in the Rock Bay industrial district - a dealer in exotic and collectable cars, a site suggested by Julie Bailey. Members were not disappointed! Their discreet, secure showroom was crammed with the most eclectic collection of pristine cars I’ve seen as-sembled in a small place. Four collectible Ferraris. A cou-ple of muscle cars. Many special Porsche models, includ-ing the powerful Carrera GT, hidden behind a blue Am-phicar, arguably the best car for Victoria’s dreadful weath-er last winter. Robert Dening and staff hosted us with coffee and doughnuts, and answered many enthusiastic questions. A short Jaguar leap then landed us at a relaxing little place called “Moon Under Water”. A few prowlers ordered their “Tranquility” – which their website claimed offered “Peace, Love, and Hoppiness” [not a typo]. Kind of won-dered just what was going to be served. Turns out this is a dedicated craft brewhaus offering a huge variety of very specialized choices. A friendly and attentive staff served us a well priced and tasty lunch. All in all, a great start to the season.

Partial view of the variety of cars offered by Silver Arrow Cars. Behind the pale blue Amphicar is the Porsche Car-rera GT. To the left – many variants of very collectible 911’s. ******************************************************************

I f you hurry, you might just be able to buy an airline ticket to England and convey yourself to the village of Stoneleigh, near Coventry in Warwickshire. There you

might take in the International Jaguar Spares Day, on March 26

th.

We are informed that this is possibly the biggest Jaguar Spares event anywhere in the world! Promoter John Sal-way reports that there will be over 200 covered stalls from the UK and abroad. Just the place to find that rare gudg-eon shaft ring bushing you need! There will also be complete cars for sale, and the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club will be in attendance. The next IJSD will be in October.

It seems that some person has grafted an S-Type nose onto a Ford F150. This is probably not the sort of vehicle

one might expect to find at Silver Arrow Cars.

E-Type expert Brian Evers checks it out

The Singer

One of Merritt’s Austin Gypsies

JCCV Sunday Prowl, March 11, 2017 Story by Graham Darby. Photos by Graham Darby

A Saturday morning saw us gather for what is becoming an annual visit to Jetstream Automotive and Custom in Sidney. About two dozen us were greeted by Jason to show us this year’s projects. It was good to see Gregory out and about again. First by the door was an Austin-Healy 100-4 for bodywork restoration, and a Bug-eye Sprite for detailing. The British theme was continued with Merritt’s unusual pair of Austin Gypsies, found on a prairie farm and restored to like-new condition. They are followed by an Audi being race prepared and huge Amer-ican convertible snowbird commuter. In the back shop where the major bodywork takes place we saw a rare Triumph sports car, an early MG, and a prewar Singer open tourer. Here we also found an E-type tub on the rotisserie. This turned out to be Peter Metcalfe’s project. The club’s many E-type owners gathered around with experienced advice. We were assured the car was driven to the shop, though the many rust penetrations gave us doubts. Outside was the 40’s Chevy that completed last year’s Peking to Paris Rally and in the paint booth was a early Mustang Fastback being prepared for the next Pe-king - Paris. With so much to contemplate and admire we stayed along time before heading off round the Air-port to the Spitfire Grill for more conversation and lunch. I believe a deal was struck between two members to ex-change ownership of an XK8 during the meal!

Julie and Peter discuss Peter’s E-Type project

The Jaguar B99 This offering by the Italian design house Bertone drew much favourable comment at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 2011. It was displayed in two versions, the B99 compact executive and the B99 GT racing car. The de-sign harked back to the more traditional Jaguars of the Geoff Lawson era compared to the more recent Ian Cal-lum models.

It was a “hybrid” car, power coming from two electric mo-tors driving the rear wheels, and a 1.4 litre piston engine for range extending purposes. Maximum power was 570 bhp. The B99 GT had two additional motors powering the front wheels for a total output of 972 bhp. (Serious pow-er!)

It was thought that the B99 might be a replacement for the X-Type, but….. ‘we appreciate the fact that Jaguar is interesting enough for people to do a concept around. It's not that we are offended by it, or against it - it is just not for us,’ announced Jaguar’s Global Brand Director Adrian Hallmark.

Bertone Jaguar B99

Bertone Jaguar B99 GT *****************************************************************As I was wandering along a wooded trail the other day, I noticed that lot of trees had little hearts containing lovers names and initials carved into them. This got me wondering. Why do so many people carry knives on dates?

A recent global auto industry executive survey suggests the people in charge of what cars consumers will buy in the future don’t believe that electrification will spell the end of the internal combustion engine (ICE), but diesel is headed for extinction. The recent KPMG study has shown that electric batteries have taken over the top automotive technology spot from connectivity and digitization, but executives believe elec-tric vehicles that match their ICE counterparts are still a long way off.

“Revolutionary electric drivetrains still need time for imple-mentation and cannot be easily integrated into existing platform concepts,” states the KPMG 2017 Global Auto-motive Executive Survey, which polled about 1,000 exec-utives from various facets of the global auto industry, in-cluding vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and other auto industry businesses.

Of the executives polled, 62% believe the current crop of electric vehicles will fail not because of the vehicles them-selves, but because of the infrastructure preventing own-ers from using them in much the same way they would use their gasoline vehicles. But, 78% believe that fuel cell vehicles will eventually outsell battery vehicles (again, for the infrastructure and need-to-recharge reasons). And, 76% believe that ICE vehicles will remain viable for a long time yet. But perhaps most interesting is that 53% of executives polled think that diesel is on its way out, due primarily to the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal. Granted that is the majority of respondents, but it’s also very close to an even split (though the remainder were themselves evenly split between uncertainty and diesel’s survival), indicating that the future is still uncertain for diesel for per-sonal vehicle applications. The Jaguar F-pace has won the Best Luxury Vehicle award from the broadcast television series MotorWeek, as part of its annual Drivers’ Choice Awards. The awards were presented at this February’s Chicago Auto Show. “Jaguar has truly been bringing the razzle-dazzle of late, so it makes sense that their first ute, the F-Pace, would earn our Best Luxury Utility award. The F-Pace stood out in this very crowded category with the style, luxury amen-ities, and air of exclusivity that we expected; but also with some serious performance credentials that we didn’t. It would have been really easy for Jag to just re-badge a Land Rover and call it a day, and it probably would have been very successful. But the F-Pace is based on their own XE sport sedan chassis, and is another big hit for the reborn brand.”

Dorothy Moleski has sent us these pictures from a recent Friday Cruise Night in Palm Desert.

JCCV BITS & BYTES The Growler Literary Review Another mystery novel by Benni Chisholm! Everyone’s favorite amateur sleuth, Philomela Night-ingale, visits her sister in the town of Saltaire. While coping with a thieving museum volunteer and a charla-tan psychic, the two women become involved with an identity theft, a hit-and-run car accident, and a murder. The search for clues is overshadowed by a ladies fashion-show and a compulsive shopper and, this time, Philomela’s powers of observation and intuition might not be strong enough for her to help the police solve these three serious puzzles.

Happily Ever After……

Over the centuries cricket games have been disrupted by a variety of weather related phenomena, although in vari-ous parts of the world riots, a charge of elephants and even a plague of hornets have sent players scurrying from the pitch. But all that was a long way from my mind on that calm warm Victoria morning. No breeze troubled the pink blossom or ruffled the pages of my book and, as I sat idly on the park bench, the only noise came from the squawking of multi-coloured lorikeets bickering over-head, the occasional “thwack” of willow on leather, or from the nasal “well played mate” shouted from the crick-et field. All was well with the world, right up to the point when a Jaguar appeared on the parkway and, so compel-ling was her presence that, upon seeing her out of the corner of his eye the trundling bowler pulled up in mid-stride. Since the cricketers, unlike the sailors of Odysseus, had not time to plug their ears to her singing, the match in-stantly stopped. All eyes were on her, even the umpires awkwardly adjusted their shooting-sticks to get a better view as she sidled by, and the lorikeets fell eerily silent. She was only there for half a minute, brazenly topless, like a Homeric bewitching Siren, immaculate, her sultry curves glinting seductively in the sun, and as graceful and as glamorous as the day she had left Coventry. Then wraith-like and all too soon she had slipped by the field, past the white picketed pavilion, and with the sun hitting her windshield resembling the last glimpse of St Elmo’s fire, there had been a flicker and she was gone and, for a minute, there was not a sound. After a pause, slowly and haltingly things came back to life, led by the fielders stumbling back onto the grass try-ing to remember where they had been standing before the cat came, whilst the birds, no longer fighting, but now disorientated, continued to fly around aimlessly. There had been a lady in the car shielding her eyes from the sun with her veil, obviously on her way to church, but I don’t remember what she looked like; no doubt she was much younger than her splendid carriage, the 1948 Mark IV Jaguar convertible which had cocooned her by us that day. By the evening I was still so intrigued by what I had wit-nessed in the park that I vowed to find out who she was, and where she lived; not the bride of course, but the car. I was enchanted. Of course any reader might have dis-cerned that I am not talking about Victoria, British Colum-bia, but Victoria State in Australia; however what my search turned up was intriguing. The car belonged to a Melbourne firm primarily engaged in wedding car hire but they also provide cars for period movies, and their stable is wonderful. They have several Jaguar Mk IV and Mark Vs, saloons and convertibles, as well as two Mark VIIs and a beautiful Mark X. If one then looks at the Daimlers, Rolls-Royces and Bentleys sitting alongside them in their pristine garage, their stable is exceptional. This of course led me to thinking that if East Brunswick, Victoria State could yield such a collection of Jaguar-ware, what treas-ures might be available in the likes of Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and the larger centres? Further exploration did not disappoint me. The number of “classic” Jaguars “for hire”

I found throughout Australia was truly amazing, so much so that I have attached a short album of pictures, includ-ing one or two from England. They were either taken by me, provided by one of the hire companies’ advertising, or freely available on the Net. As you know from my previous correspondence from Aus-tralia, until that day in East Brunswick I had seen very few English classic cars (pre 1979), of any marque, in daily use. At the time I hadn’t enquired about the reasons for this but maybe the use of older Jaguars for example, and the way most of them are perceived “down-under” is redo-lent of Scottish farmers who tend to have several sheep dogs, but rarely have a dog as a family pet. Upon asking a Highland friend about that once I was told quite bluntly that “if it canna earn its living it’s of nae use t’ me.”

I ntroduced at the recent Geneva Motor Show was the new Range Rover Velar (from the Latin velare, to veil or cover.) This is a mid-size SUV built on the

Jaguar F-Pace platform, and sharing the same diesel and gasoline engine line-up. It is 2.8 inches longer than the F-Pace. Production of the Velar will be at the Solihull plant, and first deliveries scheduled for this summer. It will ap-parently come to Canada, but we have heard no firm date.

Do you think that we could use this on meeting nights?

Pay for your petrol painlessly

(Perhaps)

Jaguar XE, XF and F-PACE owners can now use the touchscreens of their cars to pay for fuel at UK Shell ser-vice stations with a new in-car cashless payment system. Rather than using a card at the pump, or queuing in the forecourt shop, owners who install the Shell App can simply drive up to any pump at a Shell service station (initially in the UK and then globally) and use the vehicle’s touchscreen to select how much fuel they require and pay using PayPal or Apple Pay. Android Pay will be added later in 2017. Once the driver has filled up, an electronic receipt will be displayed on the touchscreen, so customers can leave the forecourt confident of having paid. A receipt will also be sent directly from the pump to the driver’s email ad-dress so it can be added to accounting or expenses soft-ware. From Just British Online Motoring Magazine

The third round of the 2016-2017 Formula E season, the Buenos Aires ePrix, was again a disappointment for the Panasonic Jaguar Racing team, with its cars finishing in 13

th and 17

th positions. The race was won by Sebastien

Buemi driving an e.dams-Renault. Next up is the Mexico City ePrix, to be held on April 1.

A nother upmarket car manufacturer which offers upmarket boats to complement its motoring line is Bugatti. In collaboration with Palmer Johnson Yachts, Bugatti has launched its Ninette 66 Sports Yacht, designed to match the Bugatti Chiron supercar. The “66” refers to its length of 66 feet. The beam is 21 feet. The carbon fibre Niniette 66 is propelled via waterjets powered by two MAN V8 engines, giving it a top speed of 44 knots. Some features: A double-bedded master suite, a galley, champagne bar, Jacuzzi, firepit and lots of seat-ing and lounging options. If you would like one, you had better get going, as only 66 will be made. Oh, and you will need about $2.2m US.

InMotion Ventures, the venture capital business pow-ered by Jaguar Land Rover, has completed a seed invest-ment in enterprise-focused ride-sharing platform SPLT.

SPLT is a carpool service that enables employees at large organizations to connect and share the drive to and from work, using their own vehicles. The platform’s ride-matching algorithm allows lifts to be dynamically arranged in seconds within a trusted community of commuters, sav-ing time and money for both employees and employers as well as combatting traffic and parking issues. SPLT (Splitting Fares, Inc), a 2015 Techstars Mobility graduate, was founded by Anya Babbitt and Yale Zhang. The Detroit-based startup currently operates in five major US cities, serving over 100,000 users, and recently estab-lished a partnership with Lyft to provide non-emergency medical transport. SPLT has just opened an office in Mex-ico City, and is preparing for European and Latin Ameri-can expansion next month.
