Bioremediation at Vanderlande Industries

• Turn-key remediation for Vanderlande Industries in Veghel NL

• Vanderlande Industries designs, builds and services baggage handling systems for airports all over the world

• Contamination with chlorinated solvents of five hectare areao Mainly DCE and VCo no PCE or TCE left

• Aim is a stable end situation for the contamination

• Installation of 3 bioscreens in the plume

• Source zone under buildings will not be treated

Guarantees bioscreens Vanderlande

We offered following guarantees:

• Decrease of 80 to 90% in the bioscreen

• DOC-level > 10 mg/l in the bioscreen

• Reduction of other parameters: nitrate, iron, sulfate

• If necessary second injection round will be carried out

Page 7: Innovation in bioremediation

7

• Biostimulator for injection of soybean oil emulsion

• Scaling up production- and injection process

• What is the yield for us ?

Bioscreens

• Installation of 3 bioscreens with 116 injection wells total

• At 4 levels: 6, 10, 15 and 20 m below ground surface

• Design based on remediation plan

Summary starting situation

• Concentrations DCE and VC are lower than in the past

• Maximum concentrations: DCE 2100 µg/l and VC 1200 µg/l

• Biodegradation circumstances: sulfate reducing

• Substrate injection at depths where concentrations were > Dutch intervention valuesoDCE – 20 ug/loVC – 5 ug/l

• 80 wells treated instead of approximately 120 wells planned

Soybean oil emulsion

Soybean oil emulsion (microscope 100 x zoom)

• Biostimulator has 2 mixing tanks and special mixing pump

• Pruduces fine emulsion with small droplets of 2-10 µm

• Slow-release substrate

• Shock load injection

• Emulsion of 10% soybean oil

• Lifetime of five years

Page 19: Innovation in bioremediation

19

• Using Biostimulator for injection of 160 m3 (~42000 gallons) substrate in 80 wells

• Storage tanks 3 x 5 m3 (1320 gallons) for soybean oil and surfactant

• Manifold on trailer with 20 connections for injection

• Two deep wells for preparation of substrate

• Fire hose for distribution of substrate

• Two truck loads with 8 m3 (~2100 gallons) soybean oil and 4 m3 (~1050 gallons) surfactant

• Substrate injection over distance of 300 m -> thresholds

Experiences

• Injection team with 3 operators needed for biostimulator

• Injection in 10 to 20 wells at same time possible

• Daily injection of 25 m3 (6600 gallons) substrate

• Injection pressures range: 0,5 bar (7.3 psi) to 2,0 bar (29 psi)

• Installation Biostimulator and filling storage tanks in 1 day

• Injection in 80 wells with Biostimulator in 3 weeks

• We tripled production and injection rate

• Biostimulator cuts costs by some 30%

Page 23: Innovation in bioremediation

23

Process monitoring

• Biodegradation of contamination: DCE and VC

• Biodegradation products: Ethene and ethane

• Field parameters: dissolved oxygen, ORP, pH and EC

• Geochemical parameters:

nitrate, iron (II), sulfate, methane, DOC, chloride

• Monitoring twice a year during 5 years

Conclusions process monitoring

• Concentration reduction in bioscreen: 90%

• Ethene formation confirms complete biodegradation

• Complete reduction of sulfate

• DOC increased by injection of substrate

• Substrate level is high enough for biodegradation
