Initial Proposal Hooligan Billy Mack Limited Access Timber Sale February 1, 2017 The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), Central Land Office, Helena Unit is proposing to harvest timber from the following state owned parcel: Township 8N, Range 3E, Section 16 DNRC has received an application from Sun Mountain Lumber for the Hooligan Billy Mack Limited Access Timber Sale. This section is located approximately 11 miles northeast of Townsend, MT. The primary objectives of the proposed project are: Generate revenue for the Common Schools Trust Harvest overstocked timber and encourage regeneration Remove trees impacted by insect infestations Restore aspen stands The proposal would harvest approximately 432 thousand board feet from approximately 89 acres. The proposed harvest would contribute to the DNRC’s sustained yield as mandated by state statute 77-5-222. Under the proposed action, construction, maintenance, and improvement would be needed on existing access roads. Other management activities may include noxious weed management, prescribed burning, construction of landings, and short stub roads to access harvest units. DNRC is in the scoping phase of the project environmental assessment so all road distances, volumes and acreages are preliminary estimates. In preparation for this project, specialists such as wildlife biologists, hydrologists, soil scientists, and archaeologists will be consulted.
