INFORMATION AND UPDATES MSEA DAY 2013BMF CLUSTERCAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) IS MORE RELEVANT THAN EVERNATIONWIDE, MORE AND MORE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED IN CTE COURSES.

MORE THAN 15 miLLION Thats A Lot Of Kids

SUMMER 2013 ACTE released the results from its annual, nationwide survey of CTE students and educators, conducted in partnership with the National Research Center for College and University Admissions

Findings demonstrate the effectiveness and relevancy of CTE for students, as well as

CTE educators' dedication to integrating and aligning CTE with academics and business and industry needs.

Student Findings:

66% say they are learning skills to get a job in the future 45% of students taking CTE say they get the chance to work as a team and interact with employers and community leaders Students are more likely to say that CTE courses provide them with higher levels of academic skills

HAVE AN EASIER TIME FINDING INTERNSHIPS AND EMPLOYMENT

ACTE REPORT FINDSCTE STUDENTS

SHORTAGE OF FUNDING HAS BEEN A PROBLEMIn June, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed a 2014 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill that seeks to reverse the painful cuts from sequestration.

Senate appropriators approved $1.123 billion in funding for CTE state grants provided through the Carl D. Perkins CTE Act (Perkins)equivalent to the pre-sequester funding level.

The Senate bill is a step in the right direction toward a greater investment in CTE, which is working to ensure that students have the academic, technical and employability skills that are needed

SO NOW SPECIFICALLY WHY HIGH SCHOOLBUSINESS EDUCATION?

HIGH SCHOOL BUSINESS PROGRAMS IGNITE LEARNING

(US DEPT OF HIGHER ED, 2009).

Nationally, the Business Management and Administration Career Cluster is expected to grow by 6% by 2018.

BUT STILL HIGH SCHOOL BUSINESS PROGRAMS MUST BE PROMOTED

Clarity. Consistency. Connectivity. The baggage of vocational educationClarity and consistency in our message are criticalConnecting with the audience in ways that matter to themCritical to help key audiences connect the dots

We all know that, unfortunately, CTE continues to carry the baggage of "vocational education" in the eyes of manyincluding many in positions of influence. While we are making significant progress, it takes some time for external audiences to "catch up.We should apply lessons learned over the years to proactively shape the messaging for CTE. We need to define ourselvesand gain control over the messaging about CTE.In order to help others better understand what CTE is todayand where it's headedit is important that we bring clarity and consistency in the way we talk about value, impact and outcomesand the vision for CTE that binds us together. We can each adapt the message to meet individual circumstances and situation, but the core value propositionand the core messagingfor CTE need to be clear and consistent.Just as importantly, this messaging needs to connect with the people we're talking withso that we help them understand why what CTE does matters to them. The new CTE brand messaging initiative that has been spearheaded by NASDCTEc gives us the tools, resources and effective messaging we need to present the CTE story with clarity, consistency and connectivity. But it can only be successful if this becomes a community-wide initiative.

CTE: Learning that works for career and college readiness. Secondary CTE students are more informed and focused when they enter college CTE: Learning that works for career and college readiness. How does CTE accomplish this? For one thing, career exploration is an important component of CTE.CTE students are more informed and focused when they enter collegeand that can accelerate graduation and save tuition money.Through Career Clusters, students can craft educational pathways for success in college and career. These are attributes totally different than those related to business and industry, but still accurate in terms of what CTE is doing. And to people for whom career and college readiness are important, they resonate....they connect. Here's another example...CTE: Learning that works for our communities. CTE prepares the next generation of skilled workforce, innovation and leaders for all communities

CTE develops local entrepreneurs

CTE improves the ROI in education on the federal, state and local levelsCTE: Learning that works for our communities. CTE is preparing the next generation of skilled workers, innovators and leaders across the nation.Entrepreneurship is a significant component of CTEand that leads to further innovation and local business development.CTE is ensuring that the investment made in educationincluding locallyis paying off.CTE is about the "know how" and "how to" that will continue to build America coast to coastand border to border. APPLICATION OF CONCEPTS INTO A COMPREHENSIVE PROJECT

THAT INVOLVES THE

APPLICATION OF HIGHER ORDER THINKING, PLANNING, TIME MANAGEMENT, REFLECTION, & PROBLEM SOLVINGBENCHMARKS DESIGNED TO GIVE teachers an opportunity to review student progress and provide formative feedback

Teachers express concern that student autonomy results in difficulties managing learning; however, increased student control is shown to result in greater motivation and self-determination.

(McCombs, 2007).

IN ADDITION TO THE GUIDE, THERE IS A VIDEO THAT COINCIDES WITH A PRESENTATION I MADE ABOUT THE PROJECT AT LAST SPRINGS SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHER EDUCATION (SITE) CONFERENCE.

ALSO, IN THE NEAR FUTURE I WILL BE PLACING A LINK TO A RECENT PAPER PUBLISHED ABOUT THE COURSE IN THE INFORMING SCIENCE JOURNAL AS WELL AS SOME OFTHE TRAINING MATERIALS FROM OUR SUMMER WORKSHOP.CLEP RESOURCESWE HAVE NUMBER OF CLEP RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON OUR SITE. INCLUDING AN ACCURATE REVIEW OF THE BUSINESS SPECIFIC CLEP ACCEPTANCE POLICIES AT MD COMMUNITY COLLEGES AS WELL AS UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF MD SCHOOLS. (INFORMATION ON THE CLEP WEBSITE IS NOT ACCURATE)

THERE IS A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION FROM OUR CLEP TEACHER TRAINING THAT PRESENTS STRATEGIES FOR HELPING PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE CLEP EXAMS.

FOR EXAMPLE CONSIDER THAT THE CLEP EXAM IS A MULTI-CHOICE TEST.

It primarily looks at a test-takers ability to define concepts with a minimal amount of application.

As such, you want to build your students vocabulary.SolutionsCreate a glossary of terms.Have weekly vocabulary words (treat them the way SAT terms are treated)Introduce a CLEP question of the dayThere are lots of ways to create your glossary of terms

Use your knowledge, a CLEP Review Book, The Glossary in your text book, Knowledge of the test etcetera.

There are some great flashcard websites that already have free downloadable CLEP exam flashcards/glossary terms availablehttp://www.flashcardmachine.com/http://www.proprofs.com/flashcards

A sample list of glossary terms is available on the website that offers 250 concepts/terms relevant to the CLEP Principles of Management exam.DONT MAKE THE TEST A STRANGER

Do not wait until the last unit to be in the test prep process.Think about how the SAT is handled and treat it the same with constant concept review and weekly vocabulary words.Introduce a CLEP question of the day each time you meet.Group the daily questions into CLEP questions of the week.

Give mini-practice tests throughout the term to eliminate test anxietyMake sure you go over them once they are completed question by question. At the end of the first and second quarters give a mini practice CLEP exam that you prepare to coincide with concepts covered thus farAt the end of the 3rd term give a full practice CLEP

Make it fun and important! Stay positive- this test is passable.

When you reach the end of the term it is time to deliver a CLEP Review Unit

Example unit broken down into 6 lessons is available in the PowerPoint online.

WE HAVE A LOT OF RESOURCES ON OUR SITE.DETAILED MOS HANDBOOKS FOR MS WORD AND MS EXCEL, MS POWERPOINT, AND MS OUTLOOK. INFORMATION ABOUT THE MS WORD AND MS EXCEL EXPERT TEST IS ALSO PROVIDED. ADDITIONALLY, A SEPARATE ADVANCED EXCEL HANDBOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD AS WELL AS A MASTERING POWERPOINT PRESENTATION. IN THE HANDBOOKS WE IDENTIFY THE SPECIFIC TASKS ON THE EXAM (WITHOUT GIVING YOU THE QUESTIONS AS THAT WOULD BE CHEATING).FINALLY, SEVERAL VIDEOS HAVE BEEN PREPARED AND THAT ARE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE AS WELL AS THROUGH YOUTUBE.
