This is the structure of the content within my publication, I have kept information to a basic overview so that the reader gets a clear idea of the topic without overloading them and making it confusing. ‘Format & Stock are housed within their own books so that they can be used as quick reference tools without having to flick through the main bulk of the content that will be stored in it’s own book.

Layout

Format

InitialIdeas.

With this publication I wanted it to be as functional and useable as possible. In terms of layout I intended the focus to be on image to aid learning and understanding. The segments that I have high-lighted and Illustrated are the aspects that I started with, I have then built upon these which I will show on the Development presen-tation board.

I decided to develop the idea of housing three individual books within a box as this would allow me to split the information up logically and also emboss the box to give it a more tactile and pro-fessional finish. Splitting up the information and colour coding the books will allow the user to quickly refer to any specific piece of information without having to flick through one thick book.

This was the initial thumbnail that I started to work on when I began designing some spreads for the publica-tion. I wanted to be carfeul not to overcrowd pages or put big blocks of text that look daunting to digest.

Layout Type

Grid

Devel-opment.

This board documents the design decisions I have made and why. More information of the development of the project can be found on: http://c-shuttleworth1114-dp.blogspot.co.uk/search?updated-max=2012-11-14T14:14:00Z&max-results=25

I used an eight column grid throughout the publication to make the information clear and consistent throughout, using eight columns allows a bit of leeway between spreads so some variety can be used to keep the layout fresh and engaging.

I have kept the layout and design consistent throughout by design-ing all thumbnails on design sheets before rushing onto the computer, this allowed me to keep an overview of every spread and make sure that I wasn’t differing from the style that I had set.

I have used three typefaces throughout my publication: Nevis, Andale mono and Corbel.Nevis for headers to grab atten-tion and allow easy navigation, andale mono for subheadings and technical information and Corbel for the majority of body copy.

Colour PaletteI have divided the book into 3 sections that are coded by colour, within each section I have only used Black grey and the colour assigned to the chapter.

Mock ups & Testing.

Using thin grey card for the belly band worked well , grey also allowed me to change the colour of the box without any unsightly contrast.

This is the result of using padding during embossing, it looks a bit blurry and odd.

This is de-bossed without using much padding, the result is much more crips and professional.

When I was embossing my box I tried a variety of techniques before settling on the final aesthetic for the box. After using varios padding I thought that the original embossing that I did worked better, this gave a shallow but defined emboss that can be seen below.
