BACKGROUND FAMILY HOUSE BUKIT LAWANG.

(Stichting Kindertehuis Bukit Lawang &

Yayasan Anak Anak Bukit Lawang)

THE REASON: THE QUITE DISASTER FROM BUKIT LAWANG.

What the Tsunami destroyed, the same happened one year earlier, in Bukit Lawang during the night 2nd November 2003. Fate dealt, which crashed into the small village of Bukit Lawang, located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Within 15 minutes the whole village was wiped off the face of the Earth by a devastating river flood. Approximately 270 people died in this disaster and 120 people are still missing to this day. This constituted almost one third of the villages’ population at that time.

Hundreds of children lost one or both parents and became homeless. Most of these children found a safe place to live with friends and family but some children were not so lucky. We started construction of a children’s home in March 2008 for the 40 children who were left in acute need, without a home or someone to take care of them. WHO WE ARE.

Sugianto and Saskia attract the fate for the future of the ‘remaining’ children. They are a Dutch-Indonesian couple, who met each other in August 2005 in Bukit Lawang. Sugianto is an local inhabitant of Bukit Lawang, who has survived the flood and Saskia was a teacher for many years in the Netherlands (Alkmaar). They are both passionate people who have the passion to work somewhere for a greater good and for the future of the children.

Sugianto and Saskia: “We see the Family House and helping the children is our life purpose”. OUR PHILOSOPHY: Knowledge gives you freedom. Let a child be a child

OUR DREAM & TARGET: The dream of Sugianto and Saskia is to offer a home (not only a roof) for these ‘remaining’ children. “We started with approximately 40 children, who had no adult people to support them, they are mostly victims from the flood in Bukit Lawang. We –Sugianto & Saskia- see give them a warm home, food, health & medical care and education, so that they have a better perspective for their future. Our ambition is that the children get the feeling they are not alone”. Their compassion, trust and love will help the children grow to maturity, by helping every child, regardless of their religion, age or whether they are boys of girls.

THE ORGANIZATION.

THE START. Our organization is a private organization without any support from either the Indonesian or Dutch government. In Holland Sugianto and Saskia worked two very hard years, having two jobs to earn as much money as possible to start the Family House by their own. There was also the help of a lot of sweet people and small and bigger actions, making it to collect even more money. From the summer 2007 the helping process of some of the children had already started and the land was being purchased. In spring 2008 Sugianto and Saskia sold everything they had in the Netherlands, immigrated to Indonesia and completely invested all in this Family House to make this a reality. The construction of the house and the temporary housing in the form of two bamboo-houses started in March 2008. From July 2008 the first children came to live with them in the temporary accommodation. At the end of 2008 the construction the Family House was completed and they moved in –of course together with the children- on New Year’s Eve. The official opening of The Family House was on February 13th 2009. From the moment the house was built they are able to focus to continue. They want to continue to ensure their help for the children and ensure. THE CURRENT ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE. To support the private initiative of Sugianto and Saskia from The Netherlands, they raise two foundations. The Dutch foundation is supporting the needs of the Indonesian foundation by fundraising, providing information, promoting the project and helping with the administration. The Indonesian foundation is responsible for and creates the practical translation from paper and ideas to reality: offering the warm home for the children. Both charities working demand-oriented, are stronger together and consist of five members. Sugianto and Saskia are members of both foundations. The remaining members guarantee the independence, transparency and objectivity. The Dutch foundation, Stichting Kindertehuis Bukit Lawang to Alkmaar, the Netherland was

founded in February 2007 and registered in the Chamber of Commerce Alkmaar at number 37131171. There is an open direct communication by Skype and internet as often as needed with a monthly Skype meeting. Once a year one of the Dutch foundation members visits –on their own initiative- in the Family House to meet about the Family House and the childrens needs and plans.

The Indonesian Foundation, Yayasan Anak Anak Bukit Lawang was founded in Bukit Lawang in August 2007 and registered to Stabat (Sumatra), as well as registered nationally in Jakarta.

THE PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT. Sugianto and Saskia had searched for a group of special and kind people who help them from the Netherlands for their activities. In the form of a Council Recommendation, an independent accountant and various individuals involved members of the ‘Homefrontteam’ and friends of the foundation. All these special and kind people supports in different ways the work of Sugianto and Saskia, so they are able to make it possible in Indonesia. Council of recommendation. We are proud of the cooperation of the Council of Recommendation, represented of three Dutch experienced professionals:

Mrs Drs M. Van Rossen, former Mayor of Alkmaar,

Mr Mr. A. Moesker, notary of Zaandijk, and

Mr Prof. Dr. T. Schuyt, Professor Philanthropic studies, VU Amsterdam. Independent accountant. The independent accountant is Mr. J.C. van der Leek AA. Mr Van der Leek is working at RSM Niehe Lancée Kooij Accountants at Alkmaar, the Netherlands. The accountant ensures transparency and conforms with laws governing registered charities. The ‘Homefrontteam’ and Friends of the Foundation. The foundation is supported by several sweet essential individuals involved, members of the ‘HOMEFRONTTEAM’ and friends of the Foundation. They work selflessly for the Foundation and help with the collection of donations, as well as the ongoing networking which ensures the spread of both: the name and reputation of the charity. They also provide supply with the management of our current website (.nl) and assist with the setup and management of our new future website (.com) and assist in keeping proper accounting records, etc. The Dutch tax authorities. As of January 2008 the Dutch tax authorities consider this foundation as tax deductible (fiscal nr 8176.39.081 & ANBI remarked).

TIMELINE FAMILY HOUSE.

Preparations.

In May 2006 Sugianto and Saskia takes the decision to go to the Netherlands to earn and collect money, find a second job, to start the Family House by theirselves. In addition they organize, with help of a lot of friends, various actions and activities to further raise money as quickly as possible to start. After almost a year of hard work double jobs in Februari 2007 the Dutch Foundationa: ‘Stichting Kindertehuis Bukit

Lawang’ was raised and registered with the Chamber of Commerce. In the summer of 2007 has already earned enough money together, so that the land for the future Family House can be purchase and the financial child care for some children starts immediately. In

4 Family House Bukit Lawang, portfolio in English September 2011. (stichting.portfolio.Engels.11 09 Portfolio september 2011).

August of that year, the Indonesian Foundation ‘Yayasan Anak-Anak Bukit Lawang’ was raised and registered in Indonesia. In March 2008, there is enough money collected together and find the actual emigration of Sugianto and Saskia place to Bukit Lawang, Indonesia. THE BUILDING. Immediately after arrival in Bukit Lawang Sugianto and started Saskia in March 2008 the construction of the two temporary accommodations: the two bamboo houses, so they can start as soon as possible to take care of the children. Simultaneously a constructor started the construction of the permanent stone building, where the Family House is located. Also the layout of the garden for vegetables and fruit started directly, for personal use. In April of that year arrived the container full with materials from the Netherlands. The first lessons with the children start!!! 2008: Step by step progress of the activities.

May 2008: the lessons with children start as building the barn as well.

June: the two small bamboo-houses as temporary housing for Sugianto and Saskia and the first five children are finished.

July: from the simple temporary housing they provide the initial care for the first five children. Also they create a place for sport and made a fence from bamboo and a door (two large gates for entry).

August: building a wooden Musolah (small place to pray) as well as layout of a fishing pool and table-tennis-table.

September: the installation of Electricity.

October: the installation of Internet (even WIFI) and construction the water tower.

November: the water tower and digging of two wells (all by hand) are ready.

December: the construction of animal shelters (chicken, goats, turkey, goose etc) made of recycled wood from the house. This wood was formerly used for making molds and a closed storage for material during the process of construction the house.

New Year’s Eve 31 December 2008 - 1 January 2009: Sugianto, Saskia and the children exchange the temporary housing and actually move into the Family House.

THE CONTINUATION OF…….. In February 2009, the ‘Children’s Home Bukit Lawang’, at the request of the children renamed Family House, officially opened. Also the small animal shelters are finished. Step by step the other

planned facilities were built. In May of that year, as the building for learning/working-units for vocational training for the children is ready, the construction of the self-made wooden restaurant starts. When the restaurant opened in June, is the Family House ready. Now after looking at the children and at the Family House, knowing this is secure, it is possible to look now to the future and what this involved. In November a start was made on the-Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan (Piggy-Bank), phase 1. With this saving plan, we try to raise money to buy a existing rubber plantation. The profit of the plantation is enough to cover the ongoing monthly

costs for managing the children’s home and taking care of the children’s basic needs, such as goods, basic schooling, medical care and shelter. That means we are less dependent on donations.

What happened in 2010:

February: celebration of the 1-year anniversary of the Family House.

May: upgrade the small bamboo-houses for rent out.

June: start of building a music studio.

August: music studio is ready to use.

September: the lightning hits the internet tower, recovering Electra & Internet connection. In February 2011 there was enough money saved together to complete the Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan: purchase an existing rubber plantation of 5 ha. From that moment the ongoing monthly costs of the Family House should be paid from the profit of this plantation. We reach phase 1 of the plan.

February: start of the “Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan, phase 2 (independency for the ongoing monthly costs for education for the children, being transport, uniforms, books and school fee).

April: start and finish constructing a garage.

THE CHILDREN.

WHO THEY ARE. The youngest children at this moment are 4,5 years old, the oldest is 18 years old. So there is a big range age difference, but that is also why we can handle it with only a few people: everyone is helping each other. The children helped from the beginning with the Family House, with the garden and caring fort he animals, that makes their involvement and commitment even bigger. It is even more important it is not only their house but their HOME. It’s a great sign then, that the children asked us to change the name from Bukit Lawang Children’s Home to The Family House. HOW WE HELP. In total we take care of 25 children in three different ways. The first group are living permanently with us. For this group the Family House is their home. The second group are children who still have someone who cares for them (for example grandpa/ grandma). We support them for medical health and 100% financial costs for school, like uniform, books, transport, schoolfee, etc. The third group receive no financial assistance from us; they are also able to follow the extra lessons on our ‘School plus’ for free, so we support them in the form of knowledge. For all children there is the possibility to follow the ‘School plus, which provides extra education. You can find more information about School plus at our Projects. We encourage autonomy and individuality: to follow your heart. Our focus is independence, future prospects and a possitive self esteem. Where possible we try to continue the family contact with the childrens remaining family and supporting the community and the childrens involvement in the community. We believe it is important to keep families together where possible and so many of the children we support financially live with a relative such as a grandma or grandpa. We encourage the children to keep in contact with relatives and to be involved in the wider community.

PROJECTS: EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT.

SCHOOLPLUS. The children can follow voluntary the projects we have. With the projects School plus, other lessons (like music and religion) and life-skills Sugianto and Saskia try to teach them skills to be independent in their future. A positive side effect of these secondary activities is that there is a cultural social element in the community and vice versa knowledge transfer. Schoolplus (mathematic, language and computerlessons). For all these 25 children Sugianto and Saskia open the door of the Family House to offer them the additional lessons: called School plus. The school plus are lessons about mathematic, language and computer lessons and of course free of charge for the children. On Monday and Wednesday afternoon English lessons. On Friday there will be computer- and ICT lessons. On Wednesday and Friday there are also extra math lessons by a local teacher. The children get also support for their homework. All these lessons are given by Sugianto, Saskia and local teachers. OTHER LESSONS. Music lessons: A local teacher teaches the children twice a week music in our music studio. Generally these are lessons about drum and guitar and even more important making music together. In the music studio the children can make music, with their heart’s content, all the time. Music is an essential healing factor in their treatment process. Religious teaching. We help every child regardless of their religion. We support both Muslim and Christian children here at the Family House. Sugianto and Saskia respect the right of the children to choose whether they practice a religion or not and support their choices and beliefs. They offer their facilities but don’t push them in a certain direction. Once a week for Muslim children, there are lessons in reading the Qur’an with

someone from the village for who wish to study Islam more closely. There is a Mushollah (prayer room) placed in Family House garden where the Muslim children can pray. Children wanting to pray at the local mosque in the village are also free to do so. There is a local church in a nearby village where the Christian children are able to attend mass as well as participate in bible study if they want too on Sunday morning.

LIFE-SKILLS. Through teaching of different skills, we aim to assist the children in gaining a broader development and more prospects for the future. We offer a range of vocational training at the Family House where the children acquire useful skills. The children make new things at least twice. A copy to themselves keep as an example for their future and a copy is sold in the small shop at the restaurant from the Family House for continuation of the Family House. Training is conducted by Sugianto and Saskia and skilled local people from surrounding villages.

Vocational trainings, which the children can choose, available at the Family House are:

Organic Farming, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry. Farming,

Horticulture and animal care are other educational processes for the

children of the Family House. The Family House have organic fruit

and vegetable gardens where the children can learn about organic

farming practices and food from the garden makes up much of our

diet here. They can also learn horticulture in the other gardens on

our grounds. We keep animals such as chickens, geese and fish. The free range chickens

provide eggs and are occassionally used for meat, although our diet is largely vegetarian.

Breeding hens provide baby chicks which replace the fowl used for food or else they can be

sold at the market. Similarly the fish are raised for consumption and to sell. The children have

the chance to be active in the care of the animals and raising the young, gaining valuable skills

in animal care and husbandry.

Sewing and textile processing. Lessons are taught by a local artisan who teaches them

technical skills. The children can express their creativity. They learn to sew and to make a

variety of textiles. To learn different skills, the children make a range of practical things such as

bags and key rings.

Paper Making. In the Family House they make also their own recycled paper from old

newspapers. The children make from this recycled paper notebooks, postcards and photo

books.

Wood Work and Jewellery Making. The children are able to learn how to work with this

material and make handicrafts and beautiful jewellery out of coconut shell.

Hospitality and Tourism. The Family House has a small restaurant set in their garden which

allows the children the opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge in the area of food,

personal hygiene, food preparation and cooking, serving food and customer service. It’s also a

great opportunity for the children to practice speaking English with tourists.

Office Training Program. Six days a week we were a trainee post for 3 children, who followed

an office training program education in Bohorok. This school year not, maybe next year again.

This depends of the grade and the choice of the children.

It’s important to note that all earnings from these projects go completely to the Family House and

the children and have no commercial purpose.

PROJECTS: INDEPENDENCY & SELF-SUFFICIENCY.

INCOME-GENERATING SUB-PROJECTS. Self-sufficiency has been one of our pillars from the beginning. We have set up a number of subprojects geared towards making us more independent. In this way the continuation of the Family House can be ensure and the needed help to the children as well. All earnings from these projects go completely to the Family House and the children. The projects have no commercial purpose.

Page 9: Info About Family House

Beside the hereafter mentioned restaurant and rent-out bamboo houses, these projects include:

As a part from the Vocational Training of the children they made souvenirs, such as hand-made bags, notebooks, cards and key rings. These souvenirs are sold in the restaurant. The children are proud when the tourists buy ‘their’ souvenir.

The organic fruit and vegetable gardens on our grounds and food from the garden make up much of our diet at the Family House. For approximately 80-85% are self-cultivated vegetables and fruit.

There are a lot of farm animals such as chickens, geese and fish, for own consumption and sale.

There is a wire-less internet service on the area of the Family House, which can be used by locals or tourists for a free donation.

THE SMALL RESTAURANT OF THE FAMILY HOUSE.

The Family House has in the garden a small self-constructed restaurant. Here people can enjoy the quiet surroundings with a drink or a small snack. On this place there is also wireless internet available for on a voluntary donation basis. On occasion we can cater for small groups if they wish to enjoy a buffet dinner and this is available by advanced request. Please contact Sugianto or Saskia in Indonesia if you would like more information. This is not for profit but rather to help cover the costs

of running the Family House and supporting the children. If you are visiting Sumatra and would like to visit the Family House you can feel free to visit us between 8 am and 5 pm or at another time by appointment RENT-OUT BAMBOO-HOUSES. Sometimes we rent out our two traditional bamboo bungalows to tourists, which are located near the Family House among our tropical gardens, but far enough to have your own privacy. We lived in these bungalows with some of the children while the Family House was under construction. Now they are available to house volunteers, visiting friends and sometimes for tourists. If you want more information about renting a bungalow during your stay in Bukit Lawang please contact Sugianto or Saskia in Indonesia. The resulting revenue will fully benefit the Family House.

FUTURE PROJECTS.

TRUST FUND FOR STUDY AND FUTURE.

To not only think about the everyday things, but also focused on the future of the children, Sugianto and Saskia have developed plans for a trust fund for study. This fund is including the children who can and want to learn more and pursue further studies, for example at university. Follow-up studies at the SMA/ SMP are otherwise inaccessible for them. In addition, the fund may be used for start-up costs for the children to be self-sufficient in their future. This explains the addition of "Future". The

money for this trust fund we try to get together with the "Rubber- Tree-Safety-Pot, phase 3".

Page 10: Info About Family House

SMALL PAPERWORK UNIT Right now there is already a small paperwork unit, where the children in a traditional manner, make and recycle their ‘own’ paper from waste paper like newspaper and

magazines. In the future we would like to enlarge this paperwork unit, to be able to print and copy different forms up to the maximum size of A3, such as cards, calendars, invitations and a small local newspaper for the village. This would help facilitate further vocational training projects for the children and allow for collaboration and benefits for the wider community also.

THE BRIDGE

Family House is located on the ‘jungle side’ of the river from the main part of the village Bukit Lawang. For all activities, like going to school, family visits, etc, the children using a public narrow suspension bridge over the river. The bridge need to be repaired or replaced, which links us to the outside world. The bridge has been badly damaged since the flood and needs to be renewed for the safety of the community and ourselves. The condition is horrible, rotten planks and wire cables need to be replaced. We try to get the money for this bridge together through extra fundraising.

OUR CHILDREN SPONSORSHIP PROGAM.

People can donate by either a one-off-donation or regular-on-going monthly or yearly donations. With this program you adopt one or more children financially. Your contribution will be used for living expenses and to pay the education for a child. You can sponsor a child less than 12 years going to the primary school for a total monthly expense for € 21 and € 26 for a child going to high school older than 12 years. The costs are as follows: Costs living expenses. This includes food, shelter, care, clothing and medical care. At this moment it takes about € 16 per child per month. Costs of schooling the children. The education system in Indonesia is as follows:

First six years Primary School (SD), then

Three years Junior High School (SMP) and

In the end again three years Senior High School (SMA or SMK). The SMA is general, the sequel of SMP. SMK is education focused on specific subjects or skills.

The children in Indonesia attend school six days a week. They wear every two days another different fixed color uniform. So that makes three uniforms a week a child. One school requires short sleeve and the other a long sleeve. The shoes must be black, closed and with laces, Velcro is not!

SD and SMP are free of charge, so there is no school fee, but they are very creative in finding other reasons to pay for a contribution. The costs for the schooling are largely include school fee, books, uniforms and transportation. The children who go to SMP and SMA need to go to school in other villages, so this brings extra transport costs 4000 rupiah (€ 0,35) per child per day. The SMA is unfortunately not free of charge, what means they can ask high prices for school fee and –books: so they ask a lot!

OUR-RUBBER-TREE-SAVING-PLAN.

Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan (Piggy Bank). This is a project which will ensure that the Family House becomes much more self sufficient and

financially independent so that donations can go to areas like the Trust Fund for Study and Future and other projects still in development rather than to the immediate needs of the children and daily running of the Family House. At this time they are not fully self sufficient and depend heavily on donations for their everyday needs. It is important for the security of the Family House and the children to develope their own means of income now and into the future, so Sugianto and Saskia can focus on their goal: to offer the children a warm safe home and better future perspective. The main way they plan to become

independent is to purchase 3000 trees in an existing 5 hectare (ha) rubber plantation which is available now. In order to purchase a rubber plantation, the Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan set up. How the Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan (Piggy Bank) works? With this plan you help us to purchase a rubber plantation in the future. Each tree brings more certainty for the future. For every € 12.50 donated by you, your company or foundation you have a name you wish on a rubber tree. By transferring the desired amount from your account to one of the accounts mentioned at “your help: make a donation”. Please be sure to contact us with your email address and include the name/s you wish to have placed on ‘your’ tree/s. We ask your email address, so we can say thank you and keep you informed about the situation! At the rubber plantation we offer fair conditions and wages to the workers. The profits will be split 50% for the Family House and 50% for the employees on the plantation giving added benefits to the local rural community. There is also no clearing of the jungle or disturbing of the natural environment necessary because the plantation already exists and is also organic. With your single contribution of € 12,50 per tree, you donate only once but you, your company or foundation are helping the children and the Family House every month to support permanently. It is once a gift that keeps on giving well into the future. In this way, YOU help the children, the Family House, the employment of the local villagers and the whole community every day. What goals do we want? To ensure the continuation and maximum independence for the Family House, we wanted to be focused that the profits of the Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan are enough to cover the ongoing monthly costs for managing the Family House, the ongoing monthly costs for schooling and raising a Trust Fund for Study & Future.

Page 14: Info About Family House

14 Family House Bukit Lawang, portfolio in English September 2011. (stichting.portfolio.Engels.11 09 Portfolio september 2011).

The purchase of a plantation is quite a big-budget, so the Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan is split in three phases:

Phase 1 is a parcel of land, which the proceeds cover the ongoing monthly costs for running the Family House. This was achieved by February 2011.

Phase 2 is a parcel of land, which the proceeds cover the ongoing monthly costs for schooling the children (transport, uniforms, books, school fee etc.)

Phase 3 is a parcel of land, which the proceeds would be used to raise a Trust Fund for Study and Future for the children.

What is earned on? • To purchase the plantation, it is necessary to € 7,500.00 per hectare (acres). • On 1 ha standing 600 trees, this amounts to € 12.50 per tree. • One hectare proceeds € 300.00 per month, so € 150.00 is the part for the owner. • The preference is for purchase of 5 acres, for which € 37,500.00 is needed. On what we pay attention, when we looking / buying a plantation? The plantations can only be purchased after the trees have been spared a lot together. This depends on the following factors: • Availability of financial resources as a plantation becomes available. • We aim for a total of 5 hectares, being a large parcel or a sum of several smaller parcels. • Price / quality ratio. • Location, if there is a reasonable transportation to the weekly market, otherwise the transport

costs are to expensive. • Age of the plantation. • Maintenance plantation. Where are we halfway 2011? First Phase: In November 2009 we started the first phase of our Rubber-Tree-Saving-Plan to try to obtain independence for the costs of living expenses of the Family House. Incredible sweet people –people like you- have sponsored one or more trees, which mean that in February 2011 the first full plantation financial have saved. Also two young fathers preserve their jobs and income with this action. A really great result! To reach the purchased plantation it takes one to one-and-half hours drive by motorbike on sand and gravel roads and across the river. The plantation is wonderful and the sunlight enhances the picture again. Second phase: Now we try the second plot together to save. The first 300 trees have been sponsored, but there is still a long way to go to reach the savings target of € 37,500.00 (3,000 trees).
