Remember the Times - Black History Month Tribute Chicago Entertainers

Haiti When I heard the news about the earthquake in Haiti, I had no idea the impact it had left behind. In fact, when I heard the news, I really didn’t know just

many lives were lost. When I watched the specials on television, I immediately thanked God, as this could have been me, you and others who were very

critical to the people who reside in Haiti.

To see the bodies on the ground, Port au Prince appearance is one of somber

and pain. It looked like Hell on earth. Many who survived, suffered severe trauma that death is near. To hear about the surgeries being performed on humans without any type of anesthesia was heart-breaking. To hear the

different types of injuries sustained by children and infants was when my break down moment occurred. I watched a doctor check out a, what appeared

to be, newborn baby. My tears flowed and my heart ached as he wrapped the gauge around her head, kissed his finger and softly touched her head. It was a miracle that she only had minor injuries.

How about the mothers and fathers, carrying their children and babies, frantically searching for medical attention, trying to keep their babies alive –

without even knowing that those children and babies had already perished.

The worse news I had heard was when musician and Haiti Native, Wyclef, raised money for his hometown, skeptics begin to investigate. Why? Why now? I personally feel that was an attack on him because apparently he had

raised millions of dollars, more than any other organization. I would prefer my contributions to go to his organization for the simple fact that he is a Haiti

Native and I know in my heart that this man would not do this to his hometown. He doesn’t have to. He started his organization and involvement years before we even knew an earthquake was coming. My heart goes out to

Wyclef and the city Port au Prince, Haiti. I pray that they can get control over the city so that those who are in great need for medical attention, food and water may get the supplies they need to survive.

Despite of everything, some survivors are still praising God.

They’re singing songs of hope and joy.

I pray God watch over those who are survivors of this horrific earthquake.☼

Remember the Times? Tribute to The Jackson 5

I never imagined Michael Jackson being one of the topics of Black History Month.

I remember when I was only 3 years old, my oldest brother gathered all the children in the house in front of our floor model television set. He explained to us “History is going to be made tonight.” He was 18 years old and excited about what he was about to witness. We patiently waited for all the commercials to end just before the

introduction of the Ed Sullivan Show.

We didn’t realize what was about to happen, but we trusted him. Suddenly, the show

host introduced a group that was discovered by Diana Ross as The Jackson 5. Right then was when 5 young black boys and teens ran onto the stage. We couldn’t believe it and immediately my brother turned up the sound. The young black boys turned out to be brothers who ages ranged from 9-years-old to 18. Two little boys danced between their big brothers. It was amazing because we had never seen anything like this before on television. I guess in my brothers eyes, in 18 years, neither did he.

My sisters and cousins jumped up, screaming and dancing to the songs they were

performing. The young brothers was energetic and delivered their number like we had never seen. They were young, fresh and timely in our era.

For decades, I followed The Jackson 5, that later became The Jacksons and ended

with the solo careers of Michael and Jermaine. When I was in high school, Michael Jackson released what would become the world’s best album ever – Thriller. Then he made a television appearance on Motown’s 25th Anniversary and made his mark. His rendition of the Moon Walk had people on their feet. Many classmates would walk through the halls sporting Thriller gear. From the leather or pleather jackets to the Jerri Curl hair style, many wanted to be like Mike.

Despite of all the things Michael had to endure, I must say I was always a fan. I didn’t

just listen to his hit songs. I listened to the complete album. He was telling a story and many was inspirational. Some people missed it simply because the media painted such an ugly picture of this man who when he passed just last June 2009, was it announced that he was number 1 in donating to the most charities.

I was and still a fan of the Jacksons. Although things didn’t go the way some may

have felt during their childhood, their family is human. There are many families who are going through similar issues. We just don’t hear about them. I appreciate the music this family has added as a part of my childhood life. My siblings, cousins and I would dance and sing songs by the Jackson 5 at a very young age. Finally, when I watch This Is It, I felt as if I, too need to be the best at what I do.

A little history on The Jackson 5 – This group had the Top 5 songs on the charts when they first signed with Motown.♫

HEALTH & MEDICINE

Diabetes Heart disease or cardiopathy is an umbrella term for a variety of different diseases affecting the heart. As of 2007, it is the leading cause of death in the United States, England, Canada and Wales, killing one person every 34 seconds in the United States alone

Coronary heart disease refers to the failure of the coronary circulation to supply adequate circulation to cardiac muscle and surrounding tissue. Coronary heart disease is most commonly equated with Coronary artery disease although coronary heart disease can be due to other causes, such as coronary vasospasm.

Coronary artery disease is a disease of the artery caused by the accumulation of atheromatous plaques within the walls of the arteries that supply the myocardium. Angina pectoris (chest pain) and myocardial infarction (heart attack) are symptoms of and conditions caused by coronary heart disease.

Over 459,000 Americans die of coronary heart disease every year. In the United Kingdom, 101,000 deaths annually are due to coronary heart disease

You can prevent heart disease by following a heart-healthy lifestyle. Here are

five strategies to help you protect your heart. For complete information, visit

www.mayoclinic.com /health/heart

1. Don't smoke or use tobacco products

2. Get active

3. Eat a heart-healthy diet

4. Maintain a healthy weight

5. Get regular health screenings

Rent or Own Your Home? Which way is Best?

You may have heard the sayings “Why make that landlord wealthy, purchase your own home.” Or “It’s best to own than to

rent. This way, you can call the roof over your head your own.”

Well, after being on both sides of the fence, this statement is

not always true. For example, I’ve had many people tell me that

I am wasting money on other people’s property. After thinking

hard but not long, isn’t purchasing a house without paying for

it in full also making the mortgage company or bank wealthy?

Well, lets look at this thing for both perspectives.

When you rent, you have to deal with property managers and

landlords. When things around the house needs to be repaired,

renters have to depend on the landlords to hire a skilled person

to fix the problem.

When you own, you have to make a decision to either hire a

skilled person in that area or fix it yourself. Either way,

fees are incurred. If you hire someone, you’ll have to pay for

their services. If you do it yourself, you’ll have to purchase

the parts needed in order to properly fix the problem.

I’m not trying to discourage anyone from purchasing a house. Just trying to give reasons from my own perspective why I feel

renting is better during this time. When you purchase a home,

you are required to pay the monthly mortgage and goes the same

for paying rent.

In addition to paying the mortgage, you are required to purchase Homeowners Insurance. Most renters, although not

mandatory, may purchase renters insurance but in most cases,

they don’t.

Homeowners must pay Homeowners Taxes to prevent loosing their property. Homeowners Taxes are usually due twice within

a year.

Continue on next page

Recently, Homeowners have been complaining due to the market, their property value plummeted, leaving them owing a

substantial amount over the actual price the house is worth.

Homeowners must do the everyday maintenance around the house including outdoor maintenance. This is not too bad, but

the worse problem I experienced when owning opposed to renting

was once the neighborhood started going down, my family could

not pack up and move. When we lived in a community in the south

suburbs where we did not feel comfortable coming and going, we

still had an obligation with our house. We wish we could have

forklifted our house and move it into a better neighborhood, but

that was not an option.

We tried to do everything to prevent walking away from our

house. It was an experience I never want to encounter again.

The feeling of being stuck in a house that you no longer feel

comfortable in, or in most cases are not able to afford the

mortgage and maintaining the house, is more than a notion. If

you are renting and you either want out do to the neighborhood,

loss of a job, wanting to relocate, you can either work

something out with your landlord to get out of the lease or

complete your rental lease timeframe and not renew the lease.

The worse scenario is that you may have to commit to the few

months of that lease. With a house, you may have to commit to

decades. There are many pros and cons to owning and renting.

You must figure out which was is best for you and your family.◙

Daddy/Daughter Dances In Your Community

The Black Star Project Encourages Daddy

Daughter/Dances or Daddy/Daughter Dinners on

Saturday, February 13, 2010

Every little girl needs her mom, but the comfort, security and love of a dad is important in teaching her how to

nurture and build relationships with men.

Fathers are invited to bring their 6-year old to 12-year old daughters to: The Chicago Daddy/Daughter Dance at

The Black Star Ballroom

3509 South King Drive, Suite 2B

Chicago, Illinois

Saturday, February 13, 2010

3:00 pm to 5:30 pm Admission: $20.00 per couple, $5.00 per

extra "date" Please call Comella at 773.285.9600 to RSVP.

The best way to guarantee that your daughter will have the high self-esteem

necessary to choose a good mate is for you, her father, to be the model for her choice

and decision making.

The Black Star Project encourages fathers across America on Saturday, February 13, 2010, to take their

daughters between 6 and 12 years old "out on a date" to a dance or out to a nice

restaurant for dinner.

Many fathers will take their daughters to a "Daddy/Daughter Dance" planned by schools,

churches, Girls Scout Troops and community organizations. Others will make reservations

at a nice restaurant and take their daughters

out to a "Daddy/Daughter Dinner".

This is a special occasion. The recommended

dress for Daddy/Daughter Dances is suits or semi-formal for daddies and semi-formal or

church dresses for daughters. It is important

not to let the dress become more important than the event. Have fun and bond with your

daughter.
