Issue 19 January/February 2009editor’s note

editor’s note

The passion to go onAs with every start of the year, we celebrate the

newness of life with pomp and gaeity. Add to that a touch of devotion and we get the Sinulog.

No other festival in the country could outdo the Sinulog, and despite the challenges that it went through recently and throughout its history, it remains to be the epitome of the Filipino spirit.

So just how did it start? Did the Spaniards initiate this celebration in order to attract more devotees to the faith? What’s with the dance?

All these will be answered in Pit Senyor!, as our first bimonthly issue features the Sinulog Foundation chronicling the long history of the celebration.

We also have some tips on how to survive the challenge that a festival of this magnitude would give a lowly traveller. We know how it feels to be under the scorching heat of the sun the whole day. And since you’d be doing a lot of walking, we took the liberty to put a map of the parade and the procession route for you.

This issue will also cover the month of love and Karina Miller was kind enough to share to us three of the best resorts in Cebu where you can have a trully romantic and memorable Valentines Day.

T h i s issue is about passion - the passion to express one’s faith and the passion to express one’s

love and devotion to others. After all, the drive that’s been keeping us is the

passion of the people behind this wonderful publication. So, enjoy!

Sinulog is a dance ritual honoring the miraculous image of the Santo Niño (Child

Jesus). The dance moves mimic the current (sulog in Cebuano) of what was then known as the Pahina River.

The steps synchs with the rhythm of the drums creating fl uid movements that can only be made by one in deep devotion to he whom the dance is meant for.

More than just the meaning of the word is the signifi cance of the dance. Historians say that Sinulog is the link between the country’s pagan past and its Christian present.

Even before Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan came to Cebu in 1521, the Sinulog was already performed by natives to show their

Sinulog is the link between the country’s pagan past and its Christian present

devotion to their anitos (gods). When Magellan arrived in the island, he gave the Santo Niño as baptismal gift to Hara Amihan, wife of Rajah Humabon, who was later named Queen Juana.

Historians now say that during the 44 years between the coming of Magellan and Legaspi, the natives continued to dance the Sinulog. This time however, they danced it no longer to worship their native idols but a sign of reverence to the Santo Niño.

The remnants of that heathen past remained only with the candle vendors of Santo Niño Church who could be seen dancing the Sinulog while off ering their prayers for their benefactors. During the Santo Niño fi esta, which falls on the third Sunday of January, children dressed in moro-moro costumes also dance the Sinulog. This was really no big event for Cebu City.

All that changed in 1980 when David S. Odilao, Jr. started to organize the Sinulog parade. School children were the fi rst participants. The

dance step was developed by Nang Titang Diola of Mabolo taking inspiration

from the steps used by candle vendors who performed in front of the Basilica.

With the present set up of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. new contest categories were introduced like the

Boracay, the archipelago’s beach paradise, is barely a place of solace. Excitement

abounds, with events from shore to inland. But wouldn’t it be great if you can enjoy a relaxing day in this island paradise?

Sheridan Villas Boracay promises just that. Located in a more secluded part of the island (Station 3, beachfront), Sheridan Villas offer its guests a relaxing and indulging time under the warm Boracay sun.

And if you are in for some adventure, their staffs would be very pleased to arrange fishing trips, island hopping, scuba diving, and whatever beach activity you fancy.

The best experience that you will have at the Sheridan is the serenity of the place. You could never imagine that in this island of excitement, there is still a patch of land with so much tranquility.

There are three choices of accommodation at Sheridan: the family villa - a two-story residence with its own dining area and kitchen; the deluxe suite, which opens up to a colorful tropical patio; and the more modest superior room that overlooks the beautiful garden walkway that surround the property.

So if you are in need of a place to relax, then head on to Sheridan Villas Boracay and enjoy a quite Boracay day under the warm tropical sun.

Tranquility at SheridanBy Jeremy Bryan Rosales

Moalboal is known for its excellent diving sites. It is the destination of

choice for thrill-seeking ocean-lovers. It is here that Kasai Village Beach Resort have put up a haven that not only answers to the whims of discriminating divers, but is also at par with world-class resorts. For lovers with the heart for adventure, Kasai would be the village of choice. A romantic dive to the most beautiful coral reef in the area, is a surreal experience. A trip to neighboring mountain barangays on board a motorbike or on horseback is a sweet excuse to get a tight hug. But a trek to Kawasan Falls can be just as romantic and refreshing.

Isolation from the worries of the world is what Sumilon Bluewater Island

Resort is all about. A resort island in the middle of Tañon Strait, 125 kilome-ters southeast of Cebu City, Sumilon Island is the first marine reserve in the country, making it an excellent refuge for thrill seeking couples. The island has an area of 24 hectares and is sur-rounded by dreamy white sand and crystal clear water in different hues of blue. Enjoy a romantic dinner by the beach back-dropped by the golden hue of the sky as the sun sets to end the day. Or how about a quite afternoon lounging by the payag-payag privately tucked in the many secret enclaves in the island. At Sumilon Island romance will surely be an adventure.

Cebu (032)

Cebu is the most progressive province in central Philippines. It is a narrow island measuring 225 km from North to South and is flanked on both sides by the straits of Bohol (between Bohol and Cebu) and Tañon (between Cebu and Negros). Its capital city, Cebu City, is the oldest city in the country. Cebu City is just 20-minutes away from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. It has all the makings of a metropolitan center and is considered as one of the best venues for seminars and conferences owing to its many facilities like hotels and restaurants.

An island to the southeast of Cebu, it is connected to mainland Cebu by two bridges: the Mactan Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. The island is the site of the very first resistance staged by the natives against its European conquerors known as the Battle of Mactan. This is also where the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is.

A 3rd class municipality it boasts of having the longest shoreline in the island of Cebu. In its waters you can still find sharks, manta rays, whale sharks, and other marine animals.
