European Association for the Study of the Liver3

Dear Supporter, As EASL begins the countdown to its 50th Annual Congress, April 22-26, 2015 in Vienna, we could spend a lot of time reflecting on the achievements accomplished to date with the International Liver Congress™ now positioned as the leading international congress on liver related diseases, but we shall also be projecting into the future. It has been a fascinating adventure led by visionaries and pioneers achieving the development of an association rich in tools and learning opportunities to help and support medical professionals succeed in continuously improving patient welfare in Europe and beyond. There will be time between now and the Congress next April to remember and recognise the men and women who have led us this far. At the time of editing this prospectus, focus on the short-term future is becoming an increasing priority for EASL and its partners. Two key words have emerged over the course of the past years and will shape the future profile of medical congresses in Europe: compliance and transparency. Regulatory guidelines have gradually been developed over the past years within the European Union as well as by Pharmaceutical Industry Associations and Networks with the ultimate goal of providing an environment where medical education and idea exchange becomes self-regulated. Probably the most visible effect will be the public disclosure of funds granted to medical professionals by pharmaceutical industries. Directly related is fundamental changes in the funding setup we have been accustomed to, including travel and accommodation support from pharmaceutical industry to medical professionals, financial support of congress sponsorship items, further restrictions on gifts from exhibitors, etc… While this will challenge some of our fundamental ways of operating, EASL is ready to take on this challenge working in close collaboration with partners to successfully develop a sustainable model for the future. Our objective of providing a unique platform for education and idea exchange for medical professionals remains unchanged so that ultimately patients can benefit from the latest advancements in knowledge, technology and products. EASL remains committed to providing the best possible environment to meet and exceed the needs of all parties involved. Not only will EASL be celebrating 50 years of achievements and advancements in 2015, but next year will also mark the 30th anniversary of EASL’s Journal of Hepatology giving us the opportunity to also look back on an exciting journey full of discoveries in Hepatology. The basis for these discoveries and the foundation of the journal’s success is only possible thanks to the ongoing support by the authors who trust in the Journal of Hepatology as the place to publish their best research. The journal goes from strength to strength and its impact factor is now almost 10, a journey not yet at its end. The challenges ahead are vast, but we are convinced that with the support of the Editorial team, the authors, and EASL we will be successful in our quest to become the leading international Journal on liver related diseases. The year ahead will be a year of celebration, as well as a year of transition into a new model of the International Liver Congress™ which we look forward to developing with the support from all involved; pharmaceutical, manufacturers, biotechs, research centres, partner associations, NGOs, etc… We trust that this prospectus will provide you with the necessary information to encourage your participation in the 2015 International Liver Congress™. The EASL Office remains at your disposal to discuss any aspects of this event. Kind regards,

PREVIOUS CONGRESS STATISTICS

Page 7: INDUSTRY SPONSORSHIP AND EXHIBITION PROSPECTUS

European Association for the Study of the Liver7

The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) was founded in Marburg, Germany on 23-25 April 1966. More than 70 participants from 15 European countries attended the first Congress of European specialists in liver disease organized by Prof. Gustav-Adolf Martini. The name of the new society, EASL, was inspired from the already existing International Association for the Study of the Liver (IASL). It was agreed that the new society should be a loose association of physicians and scientists with an interest in liver research and should have neither fixed membership nor a board of directors. It was agreed that the Congress should be held annually with the venue rotating through different European countries.

The rapidly increasing number of participants and abstracts submitted for presentation at the Congress developed the formerly «loose» association to a more official frame of organization with solicitors, scientific committee and set congress structure within a couple of years. The number of abstracts submitted for presentation at the first Congress in 1966 was 45. It increased in the year 2002, to over 500 presented abstracts with an acceptance rate from 40-50%. In 2012, 2300 regular abstracts were submitted together with 95 late-breakers and the acceptance rate has remained between 40-50% to guarantee a high standard scientific program.

The submitted and accepted abstracts of the International Liver Congress™ have also been published in various journals such as Digestion, Liver, and Italian Journal of Gastroenterology. In 1985 Journal of Hepatology became the official journal of EASL. Under the first editor-in-chief, Dame Sheila Sherlock and her successors, Prof. Jean-Pierre Benhamou, Prof. Gustav Paumgartner, Prof. Juan Rodés, Prof. Massimo Colombo and Prof. Didier Samuel together with associate editors and the editorial board, the journal has continued to develop as one of the leading journals in Hepatology with an ever increasing scientific impact factor.

EASL has become an influential and major international organization not only within Europe, but indeed worldwide. The International Liver Congress™ currently attracts over 8,000 participants from all over the world; all European countries, the Americas, the Middle East, Japan and China. Over the past 47 years, the Congress has been held in over 20 different European countries. Today EASL is a large society with over 3,100 members. The Association remains dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in liver research and in the clinical practice of liver disorders and has given rise to a large number of international clinical trials and research collaborations in liver disease for the benefit of patients all over the world.

THE GOALS OF EASL

• To promote research in the science of liver disease (Hepatology)• To promote the education of physicians and scientists and the public awareness of liver diseases and their

management• To foster public awareness of liver diseases and their management• To act as an advisor to European Health authorities concerning liver diseases, provision of clinical services and the

need for research funding• To facilitate scientific exchange and to foster European multi-center controlled trials• To encourage and support the participation of young investigators at the International Liver• Congress™ and other educational events hosted by EASL.

THE HISTORY OF EASL

Page 8: INDUSTRY SPONSORSHIP AND EXHIBITION PROSPECTUS

European Association for the Study of the Liver8

The BMI Board, composed of the International Liver Congress™ Sponsors, meets two times a year. Once at the International Liver Congress™ for a meeting debrief, once in the spring before the following Congress at the forthcoming venue site visit.

The ultimate aims of this collaboration are as follows:

• To organise and plan the International Liver Congress™ ensuring that the available budget from the commercial companies is used to provide the basis for the best scientific content to be organised in line with the EASL Constitution and the Code of Practice.

• To ensure that the International Liver Congress™ is of high scientific value, professionally organised and planned, thereby generating a reasonable financial surplus to support all the costs involved in the organisation of such a Congress.

• To provide the means for regular dialogue between the EASL and the commercial companies, and thereby to promote a clear understanding of mutual problems to avoid potential conflicts.

• To jointly contribute towards creating and maintaining a positive and professional public image of the International Liver Congress™.

• To ensure that no major sponsor or other exhibitors at the International Liver Congress™ organise social or other events which conflict with the Congress Programme, Postgraduate Course, official activities or Satellite Symposia. Representatives of commercial companies in this context are also deemed to be responsible for the activities of their local affiliates.

** The commercial companies reserve the right within the daily schedules of the International Liver Congress™ to hold company staff Meetings, symposium slide previews involving company staff and invited speakers only, and a clinical trial investigator Congress, provided that attendance is restricted to a limited number of investigators. Should the latter involve a large number of investigators; the commercial companies agree that these be held outside the scheduled hours of the International Liver Congress™.
