What is an Indirect object?
•The indirect object answers the question "To whom?" or "For whom?" the action of the verb is performed.
Por Ejemplo…• Juan gives the book to María.
Juan (who is doing the action) – subject• Gives (what is Juan doing?) - verb• Book (what does he give?)- Direct
object• María (to whom does he give the book?)
– Indirect object
• Sentences that have an indirect object usually also have a direct object. Remember, the indirect object tells us where the direct object is going.
What is an Indirect Object Pronoun?
• The Indirect Object Pronoun is the pronoun that substitutes for the indirect object.
In EnglishEnglish – John throws the ball to
Enrique. John throws the ball to him. Him is the indirect object pronoun
substituting the indirect object.
The following are the indirect object
pronouns
• Me – to me/for me nos – to us/for us• Te – to you/for you os – to y’all/for y’all• Le – to him/for him les – to you/for you
to her/for her to them/for them to you/for you
Please note that the indirect objects can
only be people – never things
Where do indirect object pronouns go?
• Just like the direct object pronouns, the indirect object pronouns go before the conjugated verb.
• Juan tiró la pelota a Enrique.• Juan le tiró la pelota.
Vamos a practicar….substitute the indirect object pronoun (iop)
for the indirect object.
• Mi esposo hizo café para mí.• Yo compré las flores para mi
mamá.• Yo di los libros a los estudiantes.
Las Respuestas• Mi esposo me hizo café.
• Yo le compré las flores (para mi mamá).
• Yo les di los libros (a los estudiantes).
Since le and les can mean more than one thing, a prepositional
phrase is often added to remove the ambiguity.
• Yo le compré las flores (para mi mamá).
• Yo les di los libros (a los estudiantes).
In addition….Adding the prepositional phrase can also emphasize the indirect object.
What happens if you have both a direct
object pronoun and an indirect object pronoun
in the same sentence??????
Listen carefully• It must go in this order….
– Subject – Indirect object pronoun– Direct object pronoun– Verb
Por ejemplo…• I made cookies for you.• I made you them.• Yo hizo galletas para ti.• Yo te las hizo.
But….• If the direct object pronoun and
the indirect object pronoun both begin with the letter “L”, then the indirect object pronoun changes to “SE”.
• Otherwise it is hard to say….
¡Ten Cuidado!• I made salad for them.• Yo hizo la ensalada para ellos.• Yo les la hizo.• Yo se la hizo.
QUIZ….• Mi hermana limpia la casa para mí.
Mi hermana _____ limpia la casa.• Yo enviaré una carta a ti.
Yo ______ enviaré una carta.• Ellos hicieron las reservaciones para
nosotros.Ellos _____ hicieron las reservaciones.
