About the program

The Indigenous Financial Counselling Mentorship Program (IFCMP) has an 8 year history with 34 participants from across Australia successfully graduating with a Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling).

ICAN Learn is now rolling out the new Diploma of Financial Counselling program for agencies across Australia delivering Financial Counselling and Capability services. The IFCMP is targeted at Indigenous people working in the financial counselling/capability sectors and features dedicated support services to ensure ongoing mentorship, support and assistance. With a 95% graduate succes rate, employers can be confident of positive outcomes for their Indigenous staff and organisation.

In 2017 ICAN Learn will add the opportunity to undertake the Skill Set in Financial Literacy Education - CHCSS00077, a requirement to work as a financial capability worker creating further options for team integration.

The course will be co-ordinated by ICAN Learn, including the scholarship/enrolment process, block training and student Abstudy applications for student travel, accommodation and meals.

How do I get on the program?

Indigenous staff applying for a place in the program will need to demonstrate a commitment to learning and completing the Diploma of Financial Counselling through participation in the IFCMP.

undertake the IFCMP will need to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing support, mentoring and career pathway development.

About the course

The Diploma of Financial Counselling is delivered through ICAN Learn, a registered training organisation devoted to the professional training and development of the financial counsellind/capability sector.

The Diploma of Financial Counselling is run over 18 months and will commence in July/August 2017. Learning will take place through classroom style block training in Cairns, weekly online group training sessions and one to one contact with trainers.

It is a requiremnet that participants will attend six residential block training sessions, for 5 days per block. The residential block training sessions are spaced approximately 2.5 - 3 months apart.

The course provides practical skills and knowledge, so that graduates can assist their clients with a wide range of financial difficulties.

Through this program, participants will learn how to support clients in decision making, facilitate the financial counselling process, develop and use financial counselling tools and techniques to address credit and debt issues. Participants will also gain a full understanding of a client’s financial/consumer rights and responsibilities.

The Diploma of Financial Counselling is a customised course that recognises both prior learning and work experience.
