In 1905, a railway board was constituted served under the department of commerce and industry.

During this period, railway first time began to make a profit.

1908 , the first electric locomotive came in light.

By 1920, network expanded to 61,220km & a need for central management was desired.

And based on the East India Railway Committee, the government took over the management of railways

Whether it is east west or north south, india train tour has reach throughout the india.

Hill Trains

As a monopoly, in the market.

Being a monopoly its main aim is to provide the cheapest and convenient mode of passenger as well as frieght transport for both long and suburban traffic.

It has played a vital role in the growth & devlopment of industries as the building of railway network in industrial areas facilite the supplying of raw material and finished goods to the market.

As a monopoly in the market

Although IR progressed a lot, quantitatively & qualitatively both but still there are many issues that need attention.

Some of the issues are :

Safety issues : with the increase in number of passenger and goods, accidents are also increasing . On an average the railway report 20 major collisions & 350 derailment & 80 level crossing accidents in a year & as a result doubts are there in the public mind about safety of rail travels.

Cost and revenue issues :

Just as other public enterprises, IR is also facing a chronic financial crisis. Cost percent is more than the revenue. A report of railway finance shows that the revenue increased at an average rate of 8.7 % against the 9.65% average annual growth in costs. This is because of

- Increase in lease charge.

-Low level of employee productivity.

- Corruption at all level & etc.

Other issues are

Low level of employees working efficiency

Social burden

Cleanliness at railway station

Lack of security arrangement on the railways resulting in theft etc

Political pressure and interference

Etc.

Solution to the issues in indian railways

There is a need for the public-private partnership in this field, that must be regulated by government but along with the private partners.

Proper training and capacity building program is needed to attain a efficient workforce.

Anti corruption policy is required to stop the scam in recruiting employees and railway exam.

Strict Human policies is needed in hiring new employees

Promotion and demotion policy is needed.

Capable and responsible Railway protection force to ensure the safety and security of passengers.

Use of technology and devices to keep check on the activities at station.

Proper sanitation in train as well as at station is required.

Well equipped stations and infrastructure are needed. Like sitting facilities, waiting rooms and so on.

Checking of luggage , metal detectors etc should be there to stop terrorist activity.

Apart from revenues from passenger & freight, there must be other sources for this like leasing trains, locomotive to other countries.

Co-ordination between RPF & railway authority.

Carry out research & development is required in this field.

Railways should be ahead of technical developments.

Should adopt foreign technology that suits Indian conditions.

Conclusion

The Indian Railway is one and a half century years old & are to be applauded as since then a lot has been done in the field if technology , infrastructure but more is yet to be done. For the better services there is a need to walk along with the present trends . Policy & strategy formulation is quite essential in 21st century to make railways efficient, economical, preferable & environmental mode of transportation.
