What is Non-Remy Hair?

• Loose hair that has not been kept together when shaved or cut from the head

• Non-Remy hair is typically the hair that falls on the ground from shaving at temples or salons

• Hair is usually hand sorted for texture and size

• Most non-Remy hair is processed in China

• Hair is usually chemically stripped to remove as much of the cuticle layer as possible

• Many factories will bond a keratin layer and even an additional silicon layer on top of the cortex to simulate the look and feel of virgin hair

• Non-Remy hair comes in many qualities from Salon hair to Brush or Comb hair

Pros & Cons to Non-Remy Hair

• Non-Remy Hair – Pros

• Less expensive that Virgin Remy Hair

• Allows user to constantly switch styles

• Micoré Non-Remy is actually 100% Human Hair

– Cons • Heat Styling diminishes shelf life of hair

• Will never have the ‘bounce’ or shine of Virgin Remy

• Although not true with Micoré IndiSylk, Most non-Remy hair brands do not take the time to properly cuticle strip their hair, and need to add a silicon layer to it. So, it can’t be washed it too many times before it starts to ‘mat’ or tangle.

Where Does Human Hair Come From?

• Indian Hair – Largely comes from Temples where devotees donate their hair as a way of giving

thanks to their gods. The practice is called “Tonsuring”.

– Many writers talk about the fact that these women are poor and it’s a shame they do not profit from this exercise yet the temples do. In fact, this practice of donating hair is how people donate to their temple. Since they don’t have money, their hair becomes their contribution.

• Chinese/Mongolian (Malaysian Hair) – Hair is purchased from village women who grow their hair long enough to cut for

profit. Because of the large population of poor villagers in China and Mongolia, this hair is a good chunk of virgin hair in the market – roughly 5%

• Brazilian/Peruvian/Cambodian – Hair is also purchased from these countries from poor village women. Given both the

small population of these countries, and the fact that a country such as Brazil has a high percentage of affluent women that love their own hair, the amount of true virgin hair being cut in these countries is insignificant.

• European/Russian/Eurasian(Uzbekistani) – Even though hair is purchased from these countries just like the other countries above,

much of that hair is unethically procured. There are many reports coming from eastern European countries of women being beaten or drugged for their hair. Micoré refuses to purchase from a potentially unethical source.

…and where does it NOT come from?

The Different Types of Hair

• Indian Hair – Most available hair in the world

– Most versatile virgin hair for women of African descent – mixes well with natural hair

– Available in straight to tight curly patterns – although very curly hair is rare and expensive

– Easy to style and retains its natural curl pattern in humid conditions

• Chinese/Mongolian (Malaysian Hair) – Has the highest number of cuticle layers of any hair in the world

– Because of high cuticle layer, easiest to style using hot iron

– Has a thick hair strand, look and feel

• Brazilian/Peruvian/Cambodian – Hair in raw virgin form is extremely rare therefore impractical for long term use

– Most hair that is labeled from one of the above countries, is actually Indian or Chinese hair processed in China made to look like one of these varieties of hair mentioned

• European/Russian/Eurasian(Uzbekistani) – Rare and expensive, virgin European hair is sought after by Caucasian women. The

cost can be as high as 2-5 times the cost of Indian virgin hair. The hair also does not match as well to African American women as compared to Indian or Chinese hair.
