INDEX TO MUSIC NECROLOGY Compiled by KAREN NAGY

*.

An index of obituary notices appears annually in the June issue of Notes. In addition to providing access to information on recently deceased musicians, the index is useful for completing author or composer dates in library cataloguing records, for updating biographical information in music dictionaries and encyclopedias, and for giving some sense of how the various reference tools cited provide coverage for contemporary mu- sicians.

The obituary citations have been compiled from as many resources as are available, and then selected for inclusion in the Index based on the importance in American music or the international reputation of the deceased. The obituary citations are separated from references to dictionaries and encyclopedias in which the deceased appear by double ver- tical lines (11). Three sources which were checked in previous years have been dropped from this column: La Musica: Dizionario; the Riemann Musik-Lexikon and its supplement; and Sohlmans Musiklexikon. Very few names appeared uniquely in any of these sources; almost all were duplicated in the more current, standard English language dictionaries and encyclopedias which are cited. As in the past, there is a Supplement to the Index from the previous year (1984), with corrections and belatedly discovered additions. The Supplement to the 1984 Necrology also includes some duplicate citations for persons in the original 1984 Necrology, when major obituary articles on them appeared after last year's Index was compiled. These entries are indicated by an asterisk (*).

The author would like to thank Pamela Spiroff, a Student Assistant in the North- western University Music Library, for her diligent and precise help in searching the dic- tionaries and encyclopedias.

A substantial file of obituary information, dating back to the late 1970s is main- tained by the Necrology Editor. Inquiries about that information as well as contributions and/or corrections for this annual column are welcomed and should be addressed to Karen Nagy, Music Public Services Librarian, Northwestern University Music Library, 1935 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL 60201.
