What HP’s ITAM Solution Can’t Do

HP’s OpenView Asset Center is an industry leading IT Asset Management (ITAM) solution & provides full IT lifecycle asset management.

HP’s solution incorporates a powerful, centralized Configuration Management Database (CMDB). However, there are a number of functions that HP’s solution can’t do that are needed to support effective decision making and management

of your software investment.

• HP OpenView Asset Center does not provide the end-of-support (EOS) dates for your licensed software

• HP OpenView Asset Center does not update EOS dates for your licensed software when they change

• Oracle revised EOS dates for over 70 products in March alone

• HP OpenView Asset Center does not provide real-time dashboards of the support status of your licensed software

• HP OpenView Asset Center does not provide you with real-time Alerts when thresholds are crossed (e.g. “Less than 6 months of General Support Remaining) or when a vendor discontinues support altogether

Support Changes Every Month for 100s of Products

• IBM ended General Support* for 102 software products in April and Oracle ended General Support for 25 products in May

• In less than 12 months, all support for many products that provide core infrastructure support will be discontinued, including:

• BEA WebLogic Server 7.0• Cognos 8• MySQL v5• Oracle Database 10.1• Red Hat Linux 4.x• VMware ESX Version 3.0

• On April 12th, Microsoft discontinued General Support for many well known products, including:

• SQL Server 2005, BizTalk Server 2006, Commerce Server 2007, Visual Studio 2005, etc.• NET Frameworks 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 & 4 (no Extended Support is available for 3.0, 3.5 or 4)

• On July 12th, Microsoft ends all support for dozens of older products• Such as Office XP, BizTalk 2000, SharePoint 2001, Visio 2002, etc.

• And then there is the support status for all the products we tend to forget:• Adobe will discontinue all support for 30 of its products in 2011 including Acrobat 8.x• McAfee will discontinue support for Vulnerability Manager 6.7 in June• Quest will discontinue all support for SharePlex for Oracle v6.0 in June• Oracle will discontinue support for Transparent Gateway for DB2 10.2 in July• Novell will discontinue all support for ZENworks Asset Manager 10 in August• MicroStrategy ends General Support for 8.1x in September

* We map Vendor support terminology to standard definitions for General Support and Extended Support

Impact of Failing to Manage End-of-Service Dates

Unexpected Costs Significant Risk Poor Planning

• Project costs increase 5-15% when upgrades occur during the project

• Infrastructure costs increase from 20-50% when unforeseen upgrades must be accelerated

• Security vulnerabilities significantly increase when a product is no longer supported

• Business risk increases due to increased product compatibility issues

• Technology Roadmaps are incomplete

• Forecasts of CapEx and OpEx are less accurate

• IT procurement and vendor negotiations lack holistic view

These challenges are becoming more critical as demands for high availability and 24/7 operations increase, cyber threats grow more sophisticated, and vendors accelerate new

releases in response.

Gathering and Managing End-of-Service DatesIs Very Tedious & Time Consuming

1. Generally, product support lifecycle information is hard to find

2. Many vendors restrict access to support information to the designated technical lead for a product

3. Vendor product support terminology and policies widely vary

4. Individual IT staff may track support information for the products they are responsible for – but this information often does not ‘roll up’ for planning
