BASIC FACTS ON “NUTRITION FACTS”

Page 16: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

CHECK THE LABEL!

16 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS | Rye YMCA 2013

Refer to the “Check the Label” sheet

Page 17: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

SUGAR ADDED FOODS

17 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS | Rye YMCA 2013

= 3 to 5 grams of sugar

Marciszyn, Lauren
I would assume people don't know anything about nutrition here and be very clear and simple as possible ....teach EVERY 4 Grams of sugar = 1 Teaspoon and have a picture of a label to calculate and share
Page 18: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

SUGAR ADDED FOODS

18 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS | Rye YMCA 2013

• Provide foods free of sugar as one of the first three ingredients.

• Sugar must be listed in the ingredient list or word indicating sugar – if it ends in –ose it’s most likely added sugar, as well as things like syrups and the like. Honey and molasses also indicate sugar.

Marciszyn, Lauren
I often state "ose" like gross ... helpful way to remember
Page 19: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

SUGAR ADDED FOODS

19 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS | Rye YMCA 2013

• Artificial sweeteners needed to be in the ingredient list too but they won’t be as the brand name, but rather, aspartame (equal/nutrasweet), saccharin (sweet n’low), acesulfame-k (sunett), and sucralose (splenda).

• Following are sugar alcohols: sorbitol,

xylitol, mannitol, erythritol, lactitol, maltitol, isomalt, hydrogenated starch hydrosylates.

Marciszyn, Lauren
would reword so not "needed" but rather used and maybe retitle all these slides as sweetened foods...benefit statement - "sweet enough"

Marciszyn, Lauren
Make sure you discuss that the one on the left is natural IE no added sugar while the other has added and I would switch the example slides as they are for juice and we ask them not to serve juice or at least no more than 1 x a week if at all

CREATING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Establishing Rules

•Key component to setting up an activity and ground rules amongst children:

•Proactive bully prevention

•Fair and equitable for all

•Expectations in the beginning

•Role Model this behavior and the “Rule that we Set Rules”

•How and when has this been an issue before?

31 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 32: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

RULES & SETTING THEM

What are your ALWAYS Safety Rules?

•Boundaries

•The right equipment for the right game

•Safe play

•Your program’s basic ground rules

What else?...

THE RIGHT ACTIVITIES

• Vigorous vs typical activity level?

• Aim for 15min of vigorous activity every day when possible. This is the aerobic activity level that children need to be healthy and active.

• Goal is to make this a life-habit, rather than a “workout” or exercise time.

AWARENESS

45 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Awareness is about the importance of the HEPA standards being fostered among:•Program staff•Site Directors•Program Directors•Key Decision Leaders

HEPA Standards are important!

It’s achievable! HEPA

Standards are impactful!

Page 46: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ARE YOU READY?Give yourself a YES if:

We know why the HEPA Standards are important.

We understand we are starting a guided process for achieving the HEPA Standards.

We completed some baseline training or assessment work such as the Community Healthy Living Index, Change Your Environment – Area 6 and 7, and /or Food & Fun Afterschool Curriculum.

Now that we understand the importance of the issue, we are ready to commit to the work.

If YES, your site is ready to move to Assessment, a guided, action driven process that asses current practice and capacity building needs.

 If NO, work on:

• Increasing awareness of how physical activity and healthy eating affect health and development.

• Understanding and addressing resistance to the idea that child care programs have an important role in promoting physical activity and healthy eating.

ASSESSMENT REVIEW ACTIVITY

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.Refer to the sample assessment.

2.Work with a partner and together identify the following:

a) Is it clear which HEPA Standards are not being met?

b) Are the capacity building needs identified?

3. Complete the A+ Assessment for your site and past experiences.

IS YOUR ASSESSMENT COMPLETE ENOUGH?

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS:

1.Once finished reading through the questionnaire, meet with your partner and discuss how your current program would measure up against this assessment.

2.You have 10 minutes.

49 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 50: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

IS YOUR ASSESSMENT COMPLETE ENOUGH?

Give yourself a YES if:

We know which HEPA Standards we are not meeting.

We know which HEPA Standards we want to start with.

We have identified specific capacity building needs.

We have met with our Program Director.

If YES, you site is ready to move to Action Planning. Using the information gathered on your Assessment, set up a meeting with you Program Director and/or other key decision leaders to begin work on Action Planning.

If NO, look over your Assessment closely and see if you can identify what your site needs to do to complete the missing steps. This is also a good time to meet with your Program Director for assistance.

HOW TO GUIDE YOUR TEAM

Now that you have completed an assessment:

•How do you guide your team through the next steps?

•If you aren’t the direct decision maker, how can you make an impact and begin the process?

ACTION PLANNING – STEP 1

SITE AND PROGRAM DIRECTORS WORK TOGETHER ON ACTION PLANNING

ACTION PLANNING IS:

•Planning, communicating, and implementing improvement plans based on Assessment.

•Thinking reflectively.

•A Process that allows sites to create action steps that address their gaps and capacity building needs.

•Is identifying what might be done differently.

54 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 55: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACTION PLANNING – DELEGATION STRATEGIES

55 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 56: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACTION PLANNINGBENEFITS OF ACTION PLANNING:

•Identify where you are starting from using the information gathered on the Assessment.

– “How far away are we from our goal”?

•Create a path to where you want to be—either site or program goal.

– “What will help us be successful”?

•Establish benchmarks that keep you on your path, i.e., periodic reporting, coaching and mentoring.

– “How can we maintain and monitor progress”?

•Help figure out what and where the challenges are.

– “Ideas about our potential challenges”?

56 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 57: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

A GOOD ACTION PLAN

• Address gaps and capacity building needs identified on your Assessment.

• Include simple action steps that map how your team will meet the HEPA Standards.

• Steps should be clear, realistic, measurable, and observable with target completion dates.

• Identify people responsible for each action step.

• Include how kids can also be part of the change.

• Be flexible and change if necessary.

• Feel “right”—inspire commitment and motivation.

• Be timely.

ACTION PLAN WORKSHOP

DESIGN A COMPREHENSIVE ACTION PLAN

• Incorporates Healthy Eating Standards

• Utilizes Physical Activity guidelines

• Weighs A+ Assessments

• Components from Food & Fun Curriculum

• Successes in your own classroom

• When?

• Who do you need to involved to get this done?

59 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 60: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

A+ PROCESS

60 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 61: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACCOUNTABILITY

61 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

• Means someone is tasked with

– monitoring progress on Action Plans

– monitoring sustainability of achievement

• Is ongoing throughout A+ and is most important once your Action Plan is created.

• Is a sense of shared responsibility for progress that develops at the site and program level.

Page 62: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACCOUNTABILITY HAPPENS WHEN…

• Participating staff share information with each other and with stakeholders (parents, children, school personnel, etc.).

• Directors, at different levels, facilitate knowledge sharing through regular staff meetings, social gatherings, and online methods.

• Progress or lack there of triggers positive feedback and knowledge sharing.

• Supervisors hold individuals responsible for practice change.

• Other key decision leaders are invited to staff meetings and progress is shared.

• Regular staff meetings keep staff informed and involved, and are used to celebrate progress.

62 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 63: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACCOUNTABILITY & COACHING

• Coaching is a process to guide you to discover the best way to accomplish a goal successfully.

• Coaching doesn’t mean “tell them what to do”.

• Use your Listen First skills.

• Suspend what you know.

• Have a willingness to try.

• Ask open-ended questions (who, what, when and where).

63 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 64: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACCOUNTABILITY: KEY DECISION LEADERS

• Follow up and follow through using staff meetings, email, or casual conversation. Your behavior reinforces that this is important.

• Explain that change presents opportunities as well as difficulties.

• If you hear some sites are experiencing difficulty, check in with the Program Director to learn more.

• Remember if implementation is not important to sites and programs, and there are no consequences for lack of progress, you can expect low results.

64 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 65: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACCOUNTABILITY: PROGRAM DIRECTORS – STEP 2: IMPLEMENTATION

Be specific about what you want Site Directors to do regarding implementation.

•Praise

•Train

•Frequently Ask

•Conduct

•Recognize

•Support & work together

•Follow through.

65 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 66: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACCOUNTABILITY: PROGRAM DIRECTORS – STEP 3: OVERCOME BARRIERS

Be on the lookout for potential barriers, and listen to staff when they describe challenges.

•Invite staff to share their perspective on accountability.

•Use Action Plans to frame discussions about how sites are doing.

–Does the Action Plan need to be revised?

•Provide information that shows you, too, have thought about barriers.

•Remind them to start where they can; you are not looking to “fix” everything at once.

66 | BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING | ©2012 YMCA of the USA

Page 67: INCORPORATING HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS BUILDING HEALTHY PROGRAMS FOR KIDS: HEPA STANDARDS TRAINING

ACCOUNTABILITY WORKSHOP

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. List out the responsibilities that you think occur in the first three steps involved in each of your roles in Accountability.

2. Teams have 10 min to discuss and generate the responsibilities for each person on your team or workgroup in real time

GOOD TO KNOW THROUGHOUT A+

• Share your experiences in seeing implementation of HEPA Standards in your program.

• Sites are less likely to achieve success if implementing the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards doesn’t matter to the staff.

• Knowing there are consequences for lack of action increases likelihood that work will get done.
