A SensationalSubwoofer!As the name already indicates,the objective of developing theINCOGNITO was to create aplayfellow for the COGNITOwhich is able to provide apowerful bass reproduction ofa high pulsed powercorresponding to the repro-duction of the upper range ofthe slim speaker system. It wasimportant to create a comple-mentary system with regard toboth dynamic efficiency andtonal integration without cov-ering the perfect efficiency ofthe COGNITO.

This has already been wellachieved by the original pas-sive version, but after years ofimproving the development ofsubwoofer amplifier modules,an absolutely ideal result hasbeen created with the activeINCOGNITO!

The secret of the INCOGNITOis an almost dramatic so-called“maladjustment” of the bassspeaker SPH-300TC. “Malad-justment” does not mean awrong adjustment, but anadjustment deviating from theclassic rules of cabinet dimen-sioning to a great extent. Thestandard dimensioning ofbass-reflex cabinets alwaysaims at combining a goodtotal linearity of the frequencyresponse with a very low limitfrequency as it is required bye.g. 2-way systems. Der Vorteil der damit gewonnen Freiheit im konkreten Fall desSPH-300CTC ist, dass eine sonst mit diesem Bass unerreichbareBandbreite zwischen 26 und 80 Hz herstellbar ist, die mit vollemSchalldruck, ausgezeichneter Linearität und einem extrem dynami-schen Klangcharakter wiedergegeben wird. Das Gehäuse fälltdabei für den 30-cm-Bass nicht wirklich klein aus - der Klangmacht diesen Einsatz aber absolut wert.

Natürlich bietet sich der INCOGNITO (A) mit der ganzen Flexibilitätder aktiven Einstellmöglichkeiten des SAM-2 jetzt auch noch fürviele andere Kombinationen an, insbesondere für Regal-, Kompakt-und kleinere Standlautsprecher, die selbst über eine anspringendeCharakteristik verfügen und nur in der Tiefe noch unterstützt wer-den sollen.

In the particular case of the SPH-300CTC, the freedom which hasthus been gained allows to reproduce a bandwidth between 26and 80 Hz with full sound pressure, excellent linearity and extradynamic sound characteristics. The cabinet for the 30 cm bassspeaker is not really of small dimensions, but the sound is definite-ly worth it.

Due to the great flexibility of the active adjustments to be madeby the SAM-2, the INCOGNITO (A) is of course now also suitablefor many other components, particularly for shelf speakers, com-pact speakers and smaller standing speakers which themselvesfeature impressive characteristics and only need support for bassreproduction of very low fundamental resonance.

Aufbau(Die Dämmung und die Montage der Rohre sind hier etwas auf-wändiger als bei vielen anderen Subwooferbauvorschlägen, die-nen aber der spürbaren Optimierung auf dem hohen Niveau desINCOGNITO)1. Das Modul-Innengehäuse vorbereiten, dazu die 8 cm breiten

Bretter auf der Deckelplatte aufleimen und miteinander verlei-men.

2. Das Subwoofergehäuse aufbauen, dazu auf einer liegendenSeite die Front, Deckel und Boden und die Rückseite auflei-men und miteinander verleimen.

3. Die zweite Seite aufleimen und entsprechend beschwerenoder festzwingen.

4. Nach dem Schleifen alle Ausschnitte vornehmen.5. Durch die Tieftöneröffnung das Modul-Innengehäuse von

Innen über den Modulausschnitt leimen.6. Die beiden Streben unter leichter Spannung zwischen Front

und Rückwand bzw. zwischen die beiden Seiten leimen und inder Mitte miteinander verleimen.

7. Oberflächenbearbeitung nach Wunsch. Das Gehäuse sollteauch von Innen einmal mit Tiefgrund ausgestrichen werden,um die Haftung für 8. zu verbessern.

8. Das Gehäuse innen nahezu vollständig mit dem selbstkleben-den Schwerschaum bekleben und diesen dann vollflächig mitNoppenschaum (Sprühkleber) bekleben.Es verringert die Gefahr der Ablösung der Klebeflächen auchüber viele Jahre hinweg, die Kanten, Ecken und Mitten derSchäume zusätzlich mit einigen Tackernadeln auf dem MDF zufixieren

9. Das SAM-2 mit ausreichend langen Anschlusskabeln versehen,diese in das Gehäuse verlegen und aus der Tieftöneröffnungführen. Die Kabeldurchführung sorgfältig abdichten. SAM-2einschrauben.

10. Die Bassreflexrohre montieren, dabei durch Verdrehen diegrößtmögliche Länge für jedes einzelne Rohr herstellen, auchwenn die Anordnung dann „unordentlich“ wirken sollte.Um die Rohrlänge zu maximieren, sollten an den Enden derRohre, wo diese an die Wände stoßen, aus den Schäumen ca.10 cm x 10 cm Stücke herausgeschnitten und entfernt wer-den. Die Rohre sollten dann bis auf etwa. 2 cm an der dichtes-ten Stelle an die Wände herangezogen werden.

11. Den Tieftöner nach dessen Anschluss einschrauben.12. Für die Inbetriebnahme bitte der Anleitung des SAM-2 folgen.

Mounting(The dampening and the mounting of the tubes are a little morecomplex than with many other subwoofer building concepts, butcertainly result in a noticeable optimisation of the high standard ofthe INCOGNITO).1. Prepare the inner cabinet of the module. Glue the boards with

a width of 8 cm on the cover plate and glue them with eachother.

2. Build up the subwoofer cabinet. Glue front wall, rear wall,cover and bottom plate on a lying side wall and glue themwith each other.

3. Glue on the second side wall and clamp or weight it, asrequired.

4. After sanding down the cabinet, make all the cutouts.5. Through the bass speaker cutout, glue the inside of the inner

cabinet for the module above the module cutout.6. Glue both of the bracings between front wall and rear wall or

between the two side walls, using a little tension and gluethem with each other in the middle.

7. Surface treatment as desired. The cabinet should also bepainted on the inside with penetrating stopper in order toimprove the adhesion for step 8.

8. Glue the self-adhesive low expansion foam over almost thecomplete inside of the cabinet and then glue speaker wedgemoulded foam pads over the complete surface (spray adhesive).This will prevent the adherends from peeling off for manyyears. Staple the edges, corners and middle parts of the foampads for additional support.

9. Provide the SAM-2 with connection cables of sufficientlength, lay these inside the cabinet and feed them throughthe bass speaker cutout. Seal the cable inlet thoroughly, screwin the SAM-2.

10. Mount the bass-reflex tubes. By turning the tubes, the great-est possible length for each individual tube is achieved, even ifthe arrangement seems to be a little “untidy”. At the end ofthe tubes where they touch the walls, cut pieces of about10 cm x 10 cm out of the foam and remove them in order tomaximise the length of the tube. The tubes should then bepulled towards the wall, keeping a distance of 2cm at thenearest spot.

11. Screw in the bass speaker after its connection.12. For operation, please follow the instruction manual of the

SAM-2.
