Welcome,We’re so glad that you are here with us today!

One page could never be enough to describe all that is taking place at Incarnation. It is for this reason our communications team has put together this helpful and informative booklet. You will be amazed how far and wide we are “reaching forth our hands in love”, so that all may know and grow in the knowledge and love of Christ.

On this Rally Day, we pause our regular programming, so that you can explore and experience the op-

portunities and special events taking place this Fall. Collect information on the things that interest you. Sign up to serve in our church or community. Dialogue with staff and ministry leaders as you learn more about various groups and events.

Our ministry departments are excited about sharing their plans and opportunities with you. Th ere is a place for you at Incarnation! Don’t miss it.

CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRIES

NurseryAges Birth – 5 Years Old, 8:45 A.M. – 12:45 P.M., Downstairs In Th e Education Building

Incarnation encourages families to worship together, but we also understand the need for loving and nurturing childcare on Sunday mornings. Babies and children (birth to 5 years old) are welcome in the nursery, located downstairs in the Education building (the south & west hallways). Please bring diapers, a change of clothes, bottles and snacks.

Contact: Jill Bellew, [email protected].

Godly PlayAGES 3 – 3RD GRADE, 10:20 – 11:05 A.M., UPSTAIRS IN THE EDUCATION BUILDING

Godly Play is a Montessori approach to teaching Bible stories, the Sacraments, and sacred time to children. It utilizes a discovery method of teaching with well-designed, developmentally appropriate story-telling materials in a child-scale classroom. Th e goal is that children come to know God—not just about God—and prepare to participate more fully in parish worship and service as they grow older.

NOTE: Children must be potty-trained to participate in Godly Play. To register, go to

www.incarnation.org or contact us at [email protected].

I-454th & 5th grade, 10:20-11:05 a.m., NEW LOCATION! Downstairs in the Education Building, east hallway

I-45 is an exciting ministry program exclusively for fourth and fi ft h graders, designed to introduce them to a deeper level of Christian discipleship, as well as help prepare them for the unique challenges and opportunities they will encounter in young adolescence. Sunday mornings will include relevant teaching, small group breakout sessions, and fun activities and games. Th ere will also be opportunities for fellowship and service outside of the classroom.

To register, go to www.incarnation.org or contact us at [email protected].

Kingdom Kids Worship for Young ChildrenPOTTY-TRAINED 3 YEAR OLDS – 1ST GRADE 9 A.M., DOWNSTAIRS IN THE EDUCATION BUILDING, ROOM 112

Family worship is very important at Church of the Incarnation, but we realize that our youngest members may have a diffi cult time sitting through an entire service. In order to assist parents, we created Kingdom Kids, a Sunday Worship option for children ages 3 (and potty-trained) through 1st grade. For parents who would like to utilize this ministry, children are dropped off at the Kingdom Kids classroom, located downstairs in the Education building on the east side of the Great Hall. Th ey will enjoy playtime, music, a short Bible story, and will then be led into the church & chapel services so that you may worship together as a family during the celebration of Holy Communion.

have a Student Ministry program is to use it as a vehicle to help accomplish our purpose. In accomplish-

ing our purpose, it will always be necessary to focus on our primary values when designing the weekly,

monthly, and various other activities. We also believe that parents are an integral part of the program

and there are a variety of ways parents can be involved in the Student Ministry at Incarnation.

We welcome you to The Student Ministry at Church of the Incarnation.

There are many ways to get involved during the Weekly Program. Some of these programs include: the

Sunday Morning Class, an EYC or Chi Rho group, Student Leadership, or a FOOT Group (service team).

A perfect way to build positive relationships, have fun, be challenged and be encouraged is by taking

part in any type of activity and trip (year round)! Some of these include: Beach trip, Mission Trip, Fall &

Spring Retreats, Ranger Games, Service projects, Ski Trip, Leadership development, Backpacking and

Summer Camp.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the fi rst and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39)

At Incarnation, we believe that the heart of the Christian life is a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. And because God fi rst loved us by reaching out to us in Christ, we reach out to others in love as well. Jesus taught that when we serve our neighbors—even something as small as giving a child a cup of water– we’re serving Christ too, and growing closer to Him. As the body of Christ, we seek to be God’s hands and feet in the world, putting the love of Jesus into action all around us.

Our NeighborhoodOur church has a longstanding legacy of serving needs right here in our own neighborhood. We’ve partnered with local agencies and schools, and started several projects ourselves. Find out more about what we’re doing and how you can help serve the world right on your door-step by visiting our website at www.incarnation.org!

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSESOn the Canterbury Trail Great Hall Dining RoomFr Th omas Kincaid and Fr Matthew OlverSeptember 11 – December 4Adult Baptism and/or Confi rmation Preparation  Th is class, taught by two of our parish priests, looks at the basic teachings and beliefs of the Christian Church (what it means to be a Christian) and also provides an introduction to the Episcopal/An-glican tradition. Th e semester is divided into two portions. Th e fi rst half, taught by Fr Th omas Kin-caid, looks at the basic questions that lots of people have about the Christian Faith: the trustworthi-ness of the Bible and Jesus himself; the relation-ship between the Old and New Testaments in the Bible; the teaching that God in a Trinity (one God in three persons); and how to receive what Jesus off ers to us in his death and resurrection.

Th e weekend of October 1-2, we will take a short weekend retreat, one of the highlights of the se-mester. It will be a time to relax, to get to know the group better, and to worship in a more intimate context. Th e two talks that weekend will serve to transition from Part I to Part II of the course, as we look fi rst at the relationship Jesus off ers to us, and how He sustains that through our weekly worship in the service of Holy Communion.

Th e second half of the class (taught by Fr Matthew Olver) looks at both the worship life that is cen-tered on the Sacraments and provides a more in-depth discussion and explanation of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. Th e last two sessions of the class will be some practical help about how to develop and maintain our relation-ship with Jesus.

Our Bishop Suff ragan, the Right Reverend Paul E. Lambert, will administer the Sacrament of Confi rma-tion to adults on Sunday, December 11 at the 11:15 am traditional service.

We will discuss the cataclysmic gap between “American religion” and discipleship (or, “fol-lowing Jesus Christ,” as Bonhoeff er puts it).  Our American experience urges us to build Christless catacombs (we sometimes call them “our prin-ciples”) in which we take refuge from all that threatens us.  To complicate matters, we adorn our Christless catacombs with God-language, Jesus-language and church-language, which makes them ever more deadly.  Th ese catacombs can be politi-cal, economic, religious, or racial.  What are they?  How do we rightly diagnose them on our way to faithful discipleship?

Join us in this in-depth study of Christian disciple-ship.

Th e Sacramental Life: A Look at Spiritual Forma-tion Th rough Scripture and the Book of Common Prayer

What do the things that we do as Episcopalians each Sunday have to do with my life from Monday to Saturday? Where can we connect with God? And how? What orders the structure of our daily lives? In a fragmented and individualized soci-ety, what does it look like to return to a holistic lifestyle? Th e sacramental life, given by Christ and practiced by every generation of the Church from then to now, off ers time-tested answers to these questions. God has given sure and certain ways that we can connect with him and receive grace: sacraments. But Christ and his Church have viewed the sacraments not just as things to be done, but as a life we can participate in. In this class, we explore both the Scriptural foundations of the sacraments and how the Church, Christ’s body, have fl eshed out this sacramental life by listen-ing to the Book of Common Prayer. Join us each Sunday as we connect with friends, new and old, and have a conversation about these important, foundational questions. Anyone in the 20’s and 30’s is welcome to join.

Families Living a Sabbath Life Family Ministries RoomCynthia Krause

It has become the standard greeting everywhere: I am so busy. Today, the model of a successful life fi nds us:• more unavailable to family and friends• unable to fi nd time for the sunset (or to know

it has set at all)• whizzing through obligations without time

for a single mindful breath And so we miss the quiet that would give us wisdom, connections that would give us joy and a relationship with God that would transform us. Is it possible to fi nd rest, renewal, delight and greater spiritual discipline, for ourselves and within our families, in the relentless busyness of modern life? Th is class will explore why the answer is “yes”, guided by scripture, appropriate resources and conversations with each other.

Biblical Survey Memorial ChapelRobert Perkins

Th is class will be a year-long survey of the entire Bible from Genesis through Revelation within the perspective of how God works out His plan of redemption.  Emphasis will be placed on main characters, historical environments, time sequenc-es, and major themes and doctrines.

A course notebook will be prepared to assist those at-tending, and will be available for a modest fee of $5.

Rule of Life and a Life of PrayerFamily Ministries RoomTuesdays at 7 a.m., September 13 – October 25 (no class on October 11)Fr Matthew Olver

Th is six week class will look at the following topics, taking as our foundation the Rule of Life outlined in Th e Book of Common Prayer:• What are the parts of the spiritual life?• Th e absolute centrality of prayer to the suste-

nance of our Christian Faith• How liturgical (written) prayer makes pos-

sible a life of spontaneous, internal prayer• How the Lord’s Prayer orders and guides our

own prayer life• Praying the Scriptures and lectio Divina.• Spiritual Disciplines• Creating and maintaining a Rule of Life, a

deliberate and conscious ordering of your spiritual life

Lectionary Bible StudyGreat Hall Dining RoomWednesdays, 7:30 am (begins September 7)Th e Rev’d Canon Dr. Chris Seitz

From earliest times (inherited from the synagogue and Christ’s own practice) the Church has had the Bible placed before it in an orderly way. Concern for understanding the Bible’s own internal rela-tionships; hearing it in a comprehensive way; and guarding some sense of the narrative line (espe-cially of the Gospels) have been the hallmarks of how the Bible has been presented in the Church. Preaching in the context of Sunday worship takes its bearing from this presentation, but the lessons as chosen refl ect certain important relationships that are best understood through teaching and explication. Join us Sunday for a time of study of the Bible in the Presentation of the Church. All are welcome and please bring your Bibles (RSV translation preferred).

Page 21: Incarnation Guide, Fall/Winter 2011

XPFamily Ministries RoomWednesdays at 7 a.m.Fr Greg Methvin

XP takes its name from the fi rst two Greek letters in the word Christ.  Early followers of Jesus used it as a short-hand to identify themselves as followers of Jesus.  Th is abbreviation works as our course title as we learn what it means to follow Jesus and to become like him.

In this two semester course, we will study and apply the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).  Th ese chapters deliver the best one-stop study of Jesus’ understanding of the spiritual life and guid-ance on how to live it out in the ordinary relation-ships of our life.

In XP, we do more than study Scripture.  We off er an opportunity to build lasting, faith-centered friendships as we share and pray with one another while applying the lessons of the Sermon on the Mount.

Th e group meets for a weekly study on Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. at the church, breaks into small groups with 4 or 5 other guys to refl ect and share, and fi nishes no later than 9am. Men may choose to be part of the study and small group discussion, or just the teaching piece as their schedules allow.

If you have any questions contact Fr. Greg Methvin at [email protected] or 214-521-5101.

Propers ClassWelcome CenterWed’s. at 1 p.m.

To enhance your Sunday morning worship, join this group of parishioners as they study the Scripture lessons ap-pointed by the lectionary for the coming Sunday. Hearing familiar lessons allows you to listen more carefully to the sermon and enter more deeply into the experience of worship. Th is class is lay lead and all are welcome.

Faith in Jesus Christ – A Study of GalatiansFamily Ministries RoomTh ursdays at 9 a.m.Robert Perkins

St. Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia is an encouragement to them to stand fi rm on his teach-ing that they are made righteous before God by their faith and not by works of the law. Th is will be an expository and in-depth study.  It is open to all.  Come join us as we grow together through the study of the Holy Scriptures, given to us through the Church. Please bring your Bible.
