When daylight savings time ended a few weeks ago, I really noticed it, as I do every year. It was getting dark, really early in the day. I don’t like it, but by 5:00 PM, the daylight is basically over. It keeps getting darker ear-lier and earlier in the day, until Dec. 21, which is the longest night of the year, the winter solstice. I’m not the only one who doesn’t like it getting dark so early: scientists have documented that in the population at large, there is a phenomenon called SAD (seasonal affective disorder). People are more prone to sadness when they get less sunlight.

Those who are grieving the death of a loved one, experiencing a serious illness, or mourning some other loss, can particularly feel the darkness of December. The holidays are bright and cheery for most of us, but we also acknowledge that there is some sadness associated with the holi-days. We miss loved ones who have gone on before us, even as we cherish wonderful memories of them. If you find yourself experiencing these kinds of feelings at Christmas, it is not unusual. But there is some very good news in the Bible that can bring us all great joy.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. The true light, which enlight-ens everyone, was coming into the world. (John 1: 1-5, 9).

John goes on to identify this light as Jesus Christ, the son of God, the one in whom God became human, took on flesh, and dwelt among us. This is good news! Jesus is the light that shall never be extinguished! John does not deny that there is darkness in the world, but what he affirms is that the darkness can never put out the light that is Jesus Christ. The light represents knowledge of and relationship with God. It represents healing and hope and peace.

In coming together to worship, pray, serve, sing, give, and receive, we experience more fully the light of Christ, the one who saves us with his overwhelming love. May the experience of that light flood your hearts and lives this Christmas and always!

Greetings, Church Family!

Please take note of the December events that are listed on the front page of our wonderful newslet-

ter. There is so much going on this Advent Season, and we all need to mark our calendars, so we will not

miss the special opportunities for worship, ministries of giving/helping others, and the music programs

presented throughout the rest of this year.

We will kick off 2020 with new chairs in the loft and new choir robes, as the robes are scheduled to arrive

by the end of the month. If you would like to contribute towards paying the final balance for the robes,

please make checks out to the church and include "choir robes" in the memo.

Entering into my fourth year as your Director of Music, I continue to feel immeasurably blessed in this po-

sition and am already excited about scheduling programs for the upcoming year.

Thank you all so much for your love and support of our music ministry, and I pray that you all have a very

Merry Christmas!

Our Bell Choir went to see the

Raleigh Ringers, a world re-

nowned and awesome bell

choir. We enjoyed their music,

‘bell-manship’ and stage

shenanigans.

F.U.E.L. Happenings We have had such a busy and amazing November. The youth vol-unteered at the annual church BBQ, helping to make it successful. We have served our community by having a cleaning day at the Neighborhood Care Center, raking leaves in the Smithville Com-munity and helped assemble Thanksgiving baskets after the Com-munity Thanksgiving Service. We also had a great time drawing near to God, each other and having fun at our fall retreat to TVR in Plumtree, NC. This retreat center is truly a hidden gem.

The summer ASP program focuses on making homes warmer, safer and drier. ASP is first and foremost a relational ministry with an emphasis on building. Mt. If you feel led to serve on this mission trip please go to https://registrations.planningcenteronline.com/events/318830/details for registration and more information.

Youthworks is our Middle School Summer Mission Trip. This is also open to those who cannot attend ASP but would like to serve in a similar community. Last year was the first year Mt. Zion participated in this ministry and it was such a blessing for all who served and were served. This year we will be ministering to the community of Beckley, WV the week of July 19th-July 24th. This year’s team will be working on painting and yard beautification projects as well as partnering with organizations such as Energy Express, School of Harmony and the Salvation Army. We will also be visit-ing the Exhibition Coal Mine. There will be fun activities throughout the week as well as tour-ing a state park, having a cookout and attending a local youth-led worship service. Priority will be given to those students who have completed 6th grade in spring 2020 through stu-dents who finished 8th grade in spring 2020. MISSIONS AND OUTREACH

Repairers of the Breach

This ministry helps families in need in our community and

are sent to us through Ada Jenkins Center. These families

all live in either Huntersville, Cornelius, or Davidson. We

put together boxes for 90 families, 215 children and pro-

vide each family with a box of food, winter clothing and

toys for Christmas. We do this to help them during the

Christmas school vacation time when many of these fami-

lies struggle to feed their children. It takes approximately

$150 per family to accomplish this. You can choose to

sponsor a family by making a monetary donation or an in-

dividual donation of new clothing or toys and food. No do-

nation is too small and at the end, any items left over will

go to either Ada Jenkins or Crisis Assistance. But, we

need your help! Since this is a ministry where dona-

tions come from our congregation, we rely on our mem-

bers to help with donations of items, monetary donations,

or their own time as volunteers to help process and deliver

to our families. We will need volunteers to help with need-

ed items, pack boxes, wrap toys and clothing and help at

the end with delivery to the families.

accepting where we really are and holding out for healing and hope. If you are living through troubling days,

Financial Update As we approach the end of the year, please consider making a year end financial gift to the church budget as we would like to be able to finish the year in a strong financial position. Active children’s and youth ministries, worship services on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights, excellent music ministries, and Bible studies are but a few of the programs that we make possible through giving to the church budget. As United Method-ists, we also honor our commitment to the connectional United Methodist Church through our apportion-ments. At this point, we have paid 83.3% of our yearly asking toward apportionments. When we join the church, we promise to support the church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. We invite you to renew all of these commit-ments in the final month of 2019. This will enable us to honor all of our commitments to programs funded in the church budget, pay 100% of our apportionments, and begin the year 2020 on a strong financial founda-tion. Thanks again for your generous support of Mt. Zion. From Pastor Angela and the Finance Committee

80TH ANNUAL MT. ZION BBQ A

SUCCESS

Thank you for all your help at this year’s

BBQ. It was a wonderful day in the life

of our church. So many of you came

out on Friday and Saturday to help

where you could. There was not a

space that was not filled. Records were

set in making the slaw, cooking the

meat, and running a fast and speedy

take out. Thank you to each person that

brought pies, cakes, etc. All people at-

tending commented on our homemade

desserts. It’s hard to pick just one.

Special thanks to all who bought BBQ

pigs in honor, memory, or celebration of

someone. That money went to offset

the cost of the meat.

Also a special thanks to Susie Crump,

Dale & Shelia Readling for heading the

making of the slaw, Roddy & Karen Oxi-

dine for heading the take-out line, Mike

& Tanya Knutson for heading the kitch-

en and dining room, Jimmy Grindstaff,

Ashley Goodrich, Fifi Ray for being at

the church all day working wherever

needed, Alice Caldwell, for taking ticket

orders all day.

Thank you for our night cookers John

Wiese, Christopher Westmoreland, Mat-

thew Westmoreland, Ben Goodson,

Landon Wiese, Sam Coker, and Wayne

Westmoreland.

Thank you to the office staff for their

extra work in helping me get ready be-

fore the event.

This year’s proceeds will go toward

church renovations and F.U.E.L. (youth

fund). The net proceeds of the BBQ

were $8,353.01.

This is my last year of heading up the

BBQ as I will be turning the reigns over

to the Journey Sunday School Class for

next year’s 81st year. Please give them

the support you have given me the last

two years.

In Christ’s Love,

Jan Horton
