PORTÅSEN, WILDENVEY’S WORLD www.portaasen.no At the age of three, Herman moved to live with his father, Lauritz Portaas, on the farm Portåsen, located on the edge of the forest overlooking the village. Living within close proximity to forest and fields he developed a joy and fondness of nature which is clear in a large proportion of his literary works. It was under the name of Portaas, that Herman published his first poems. As a grown man, however, he took the name Herman Wildenvey, and quite quickly became one of Norway’s most beloved poets. In his own memoirs Wildenvey explains most vividly his childhood at Portåsen, and how the encounter with nature, the tranquility of the forest and the sound from the stream Veia, played a part in shaping him both as a person and as a poet. Trails: Walking the marked trails along clover filled meadows and a foray within the forest, and up to the stream, is a “must” during the Portåsen visit. Who knows; perhaps your own son or daughter is the kingdom’s next budding poet. Or perhaps it is to you yourself the words will pay a visit during your walk in the poets footsteps along the meadows.

LAUVLIA, TH. KITTELSENS, ARTIST’S HOME www.lauvlia.no Th. Kittelsen bought the place in 1898 and built the home “Lauvlia”. The studio was designed exactly as Th. Kittelsen wanted. Through the studio’s window he could see his Soria Moria. As time went by a storehouse, wash house, woodshed, chicken house, barn and boat house all came into existence in the yard. Lauvlia was run as a smallholding with different animals. The family grew their own potatoes, vegetables, fruit and berries. The large family experienced their happiest years while living here and their spirits were brought very low when they had to sell in 1909. All the houses except the barn stand as they did then. Your guide will allow you to become more acquainted with Theodor Kittelsen both as an artist and as a person. The place is open, with guided tours included, throughout the summer months, and one can book for group tours all year round. Gamleveien trails: Discover the cultural landscape that inspired Kittelsen to work and live in Sigdal by foot. The trail goes along Gamleveien to Lauvlia, where the famous artist once during the 1890s, was so infatuated by the view that he decided to build a home. Signposts can be found along the walk telling you what you are viewing whilst on the walk. The road takes you, amongst other places, through the croft Sø-Hellerud. Benches and tables have been placed to give people a break along the way. A shelter can be found just before one reaches Lauvlia. The walk is approximately three kilometers long.

HAGAN, CHR. SKREDSVIGS ARTIST’S HOME www.skredsvig.no

Hagan is one of the countries best preserved artists’ homes from the golden age of Norwegian art. This is where the painter Christian Skredsvig (1854 - 1924) lived for 30 years. Skredsvig was, in his time, the most famous of the Norwegian painters in Paris. He lived in Paris for 6 years before he moved home to the farm Fleskum in Bærum. It was Skredsvig and his first wife Maggie Plahte who were the hosts at the farm during the famous “Fleskum summer” of 1886. He started the sketches of Seljefløyten here and finished the painting in 1889. In 1894 they divorced and Skredsvig moved up to Eggedal. He had been to Eggedal on study trips before with Harriet Backer, Gerhard Munthe and Ernst Josephson. Skredsvig became infatuated by its landscape, which with its wide view could make any national romantic start to sing the national anthem “Ja vi elsker”. Skredsvig bought the place Hagan high up on the hills. First he remodeled the barn to become a studio and after a while the house was extended to house the family. With all the extensions the house became very unique and is in itself worth experiencing. Skredsvig drew the house himself and partook in the construction. Both the house and its interiors have stood untouched since Chr. Skredsvig and his family lived there. New gallery with Skredsvig’s art. Guided tours all summer. Group bookings all year. Hagan, forest and culture trail: At Hagan one can walk in the footsteps of Swedish artist Ernst Josephson round Åsfossen. This is where he painted “Strømkarlen”. Harriet Backer and Gerhard Munthe also painted in Eggedal. There are many information boards about the art and nature here, along the path, and the view across the artists’ valley has inspired painters for centuries.

TRILLEMARKA AND THE MADONNA STATUE

http://www.ut.no/tur/2.5479/ The statue “Madonna and the child” is situated on Bjønneskortanatten in Eggedals western mountain, and stands at 1020 meters above sea level. The statue is situated 100 meters outside Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell’s nature reserve, and from this spot is a grand view overlooking Storvatn, Buvatn and Gaustadtoppen to the west. Skodøl and Nedalsfjellet can all be seen towards the south, and Sølandsfjellet towards the east. In 2016 the trail was reorganized and stone set by Sherpas from Nepal. When you arrive above the forest belt the landscape opens and there are views overlooking the vast mountain areas. It’s a steady climb all the way with a few gentler stretches underway. A pleasant walk for all ages. With a steady pace one can reach the top in just over an hour.
