What is a Slum? A slum is an overcrowded area of a city

where the living conditions are difficult and unsanitary.

Slums are caused by the immigration of large numbers of poverty stricken people into a small area.

Dhavari is a huge slum in Mumbai, India.

Dhavari Dhavari is the largest slum and it’s in the

heart of Mumbai. It is sandwiched between two major cities,

Mahim in the West and Sion in the East. 600,000 to 1 million people occupy the

slum.

How the Slum Started Until the 19th century, Mumbai was a

swamp. There was once a big fishing market,

but once the swamp filled with waste, they couldn’t fish anymore.

They turned to the cotton textile industry and thousands of people migrated to Dhavari to work.

Economy in the Slum The population has increased twelve

times in the last century. They are expected to have 129

million people in greater Mumbai by 2012.

46% of residents are Indian Migrants. The lower class makes 15% of what

the higher class makes.

Geographical Facts Dhavari has dry, dirt

ground. It is located between

to main railways (Western and Central Railways).

To the north is lies the Mithi River which doesn’t contain clean drinking water.

Dhavari covers an area of 535 Acres.

Both its locations and poor drainage systems make Dhavari particularly vulnerable to floods during “wet season” (a period of time where it rains almost everyday for 2 months.)
