We believe that sustainability goals and amazing design drive each other forward.

After a decade of experience in sustainable design, we have discovered that understanding and drawing design lessons from the local ecology has long-lasting value for land use planning and design teams. Our

mission is to deliver this value for the mutually beneficial effect of high performance design and land restoration.

We make ecological integration a reality.

Juan Rovalo, Biol., Certified Biomimicry Professional, MBA

Juan is the founder and key principal of In Site and a highly skilled biologist whose strength lies in his ability to work with interdisciplinary teams in diverse cultural and ecological contexts. His strong communication skills and deep knowledge of biological strategies and systems enriches the processes of design that are aimed towards innovation and high performance. His growing international activity in biomimicry related projects, including various locations throughout Mexico, the United States, and beyond, has positioned Juan as one of best specialists worldwide. The skills he offers are a key differentiator for the creative and planning processes of architects, engineers, landscapers, urban planners, real state developers and industrial and product designers.

Juan has been featured in Fast Company (Biomimicry Challenge: TOA Uses Fungi to Reimagine Sustainable Neighborhoods) applying biomimicry to the concept of ecodistricts for city planning. Juan also led the design of a biomimicry exhibit for the Asteroide B612 Diseño regenerativo y balances ambientales exhibit at the Modern Art Museum in Mexico City experienced by over 50,000 visitors.

Juan holds a Bachelors degree in Biology from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. During this course of biological studies, Juan worked in a variety of research laboratories, including neuroscience, biotechnology, ecology, botany and mycology. To deepen the opportunity to apply biology, Juan also studied an MBA at the Universidad Iberoamericana as well as holds the title of Certified Biomimicry Professional from Biomimicry 3.8 following the completion of their inaugural two-year biomimicry training program. This unique coupling of educational endeavors compels Juan to relay his scientific foundation and passion for the environmental topics in a way that is complemented with his sensibility towards social and economical dimensions for each project.

Locally-attuned strategies for site planning and land management endeavors

Our network of experienced biologists, designers, and process specialists collaborate closely with your team to understand, interpret, and ultimately draw design inspiration from the ecology of a project's site. Our goal is to empower land managers, designers, and engineers to do their best and most innovative work with key ecosystem insights drawn directly from the site.

The site analysis service includes on-site research and remote data analysis, which are critical to uncovering the design team's unique opportunity for ecological integration. Our deliverables are customized for client needs and include detailed ecological description of the site, accompanying photographs, GIS maps, and to-scale site models allow the design team to immerse themselves in the project context.

Driven by both the ecology of the site and the owners' intention for the project, our work effectively empowers the team to make a restorative impact.

A powerful synthesis of human intention and ecology

We integrate the intention for the project with the ecological potential of the site.  This is accomplished through a specialized process starting at the owners' level at the project onset along with the selected design team.

This highly customized service commences with an alignment session to harvest and integrate the human intention for the site and continues through the design phase to deepen the understanding of the stakeholders' intentions and incorporation into the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. During the construction phase, the design process integration service ensures that impact to the natural capital of the site is minimized and generate the construction phase activity guidelines.
