the Battle of Waterloo two centuries ago and which is being commemorated in Belgium this year.
• and the First World War one century ago which reached a terrible stalemate in 1915 with both sides suffering huge losses and little progress.
• and also in 1915 in Grahamstown the nuns building the beautiful chapel I mentioned last month.
I mention the chapel again because Richard Cock brought the Chanticleer Singers to the chapel for a concert by candlelight – ‘War and Peace’. There were songs, a couple which we all joined in, readings of poetry and prose between songs by the choir – they sing unaccompanied. The big audience were asked not to applaud but to treat the performance as a meditation. It was an uncanny, quiet candlelit tribute to all of our pasts. The choir sang ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ as they filed out – a song just as appropriate today when families are scattered around the world.A sad but moving, wonderful tribute.
Birds, Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important Things
Did you know? • The egg on the left (top) belongs to a Crowned Lapwing and the one on the left (2nd) is that of a Laughing Dove. Why should two birds roughly the same size have such different size eggs? Of course the lapwing's eggs are bigger because its chick (3rd from top) has to be more developed when it hatches than the dove. The young lapwing has to be ready to run around with its parents as soon as its hatches whereas the dove's chick (below left) is helpless and looked after by its parents for weeks after it hatches. • The red spot on the yellow bill of the Kelp Gull and the overseas Herring Gull is very important. The new born chick pecks at this red

Dear FriendsDo you play Bridge? Not? Then now is the time to learn! Both my wife and I play and it gives us a lot of pleasure and, hopefully keeps those brains cells alive. That is very important as you get older and there are many of us older folk whose bodies don’t work so well any more and bridge becomes a life-saver. Get somebody to teach you, you won’t be sorry.
Sitting on the StoepThe Knysna Loeries have been visiting us with a vengeance this year. We haven’t seen them for a couple of years but they should indeed be here – we live in Loerie Lane! We have two old pepper trees (alright I know they are not indigenous but they were there and by the time a new tree is that size I will be long gone!) one in our garden and one to our right in front of our neighbour’s garden across our common driveway. The very dense foliage seems to suit the shy bird but he often announces his presence with some loud squawks as though inviting us to spot him. Up in the branches against the light sky he looks almost black (which made it difficult to identify him) and only unfolds his radiance when he flies off. Our pepper tree is more stringy so the bird prefers the denser one next door. It needed some explaining to our neighbour why we were peering at her tree! Also we are gradually cutting back other trees to allow two indigenous Cordia caffras, which we didn’t plant but the birds gifted us, to take over and one day our pepper will go. Meanwhile it provides the needed shade over our outside deck off the stoep – an additional stoep place ideal for summer contemplation and chatting and quaffing. So the Stoep legend lives on!By the way the Symphony Concert at the Festival was magnificent with the US’s violinist Joanne Frankel paving the way in Tchaikovsky’s concerto with such joy. Talking of violins there was a lovely twist to the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra’s performance. A violin that was played in 1915 by a pupil at St Andrews School in Grahamstown ultimately went with a grandchild to Scotland and guess what? It came back to Grahamstown for this performance! Isn’t that a lovely story? For me the year 2015 has many historical connections:• one of the key dates in my history clock is 1815 –

spot until the parent bird regurgitates food for it to eat. Experiments have shown that when this spot was painted yellow, the chicks pecked much fewer times and often went hungry. • A bird's eye takes up very much space in a bird's head as can be seen by this illustration of an ostrich. Each eye is about the size of a golf ball. Obviously
this does not leave much space for a brain. Birds have sacrificed much intelligence for extremely good eye sight. Thank you, Wim, you are a veritable mine of most interesting information.

Chairman's Note
Proposed re-development of The Fern Shopping Centre
JHB 101 has appointed NIB PROJECTS as the sole mandated Leasing Agents and Tenant Facilitators for the proposed re-development of The Fern Shopping centre on the corner of CEDAR AND GATESIDE AVENUE DAINFERN.
In conjunction with Richard Fowlds of NIB PROJECTS, and JHB 101 have identified the centre as being a strategically prime location for an innovative, traditional, suburban strip mall where convenience meets the desperately needed and sorely missed personal service of bygone years. The tenant mix will include the local butcher, baker, green grocer, wine merchant, apothecary, restaurants and takeaways-all vitally important, complementary line shops, providing a myriad of products and services.
The centre intends to offer good, old fashioned values of personal customer connection, communication
and service in a modern, upmarket shopping centre environment.
Many of the proposed tenants have been referred by local business owners and entrepreneurs. As the centre is not relying on the major big brand anchors, the tenants have been vetted and handpicked based on the basis of experience and commitment to the area.
The centre is planning its opening in April 2016 and is seeking an inspirational name for the shopping centre which will associate itself with the greater Dainfern community.

When your home loan is paid up
Property MattersAll your property related questions answered
The home loan account carries service fees and insurance premiums which are the banks costs in managing the home loan account and providing the home owners insurance. These costs, will continue running should the owner elect to keep the home loan account open and not cancel the bond.
A benefit of keeping your home loan account open, is the fact that you will have access to relatively inexpensive credit in that a new bond will not have to be registered, which will result in saving on registration costs, should you wish to apply for a further loan later on again. The bond process will also be faster than the initial bond registration process. Banks are obligated to provide annual statements and notifications of rate changes on home loan accounts, so the owner will be able to monitor the costs and compare this to other financing options.
The choice to close the account and cancel the mortgage bond, will include a bond cancellation fee (generally around R 3,000) which is payable to the bank’s bond
cancellation attorneys. If the client elects to cancel the bond, the bank will give instruction to its cancellation attorneys, to draw up the cancellation documents and lodge them at the Deeds Office. The Registrar of Deeds will place an endorsement on the title deed which serves as proof that the bond has been paid up and cancelled.
If the owner chooses to cancel the bond and at a later stage take out another home loan, this process would be regarded as a new home loan and a new mortgage bond will have to be registered with associated costs.
In summary you can keep the account open, continue to pay the service fees and insurance premiums, which could provide access to credit in the future as well as continued insurance cover over the property. Alternatively you can cancel the bond save on continued service fees and merely register a new home loan if and when the need arises keeping in mind that you have to go through the whole application and approval process again.
Where the full term of the home loan period is reached and the account reflects a zero balance two options arise:
1. Keep the account open and active should you want to utilize the bond again or
2. Close the account and have the existing bond cancelled

Everything you need to know about wall paperInterior Decor & Design has a long and proud history of being a retailer of choice for those wanting to wallpaper their homes. Wallpaper is once again at the forefront of home decoration.
Interior Ideas
continue on page 18
From adding interest in a hallway to creating a bedroom wall so enticing you want to stroke it, wallpaper has come a long way since the statement wall.
So you have spent time exploring the different options, either on line or in a showroom, but are overwhelmed by choices...
whether you're drawn to traditional floral, a majestic damask, dark drama or a bit of wit and whimsy, there's a wallpaper for you. But there are a number of other factors to be considered. On the following pages we hope to not only get you inspired but help you in making the right choice for the areas you have in mind. And if you still believe that wallpaper may be nice to look at but "not for you", we hope our fun "10 reasons to love wallpaper" will get you thinking otherwise!
10 Reasons to Love Wallpaper!1. Because paintable wallpapers, allow you to change
the colour so you will never get bored2. Because a little bit of bling goes a long way. Metallic
wallpaper makes a sophisticated and fashionable statement.
3. Because you can "travel" everyday.4. Because you can bring the outdoors in.5. Because art should not be confined by frames.6. Because you can give your home a calm and coherent
feel by pulling out a colour from a wallpaper and use it to create matching accents.
7. Because it is never too late to have a happy background.
8. Because wallpaper is a timeless decorating feature.9. Because the colour, design and texture options are
endless.10. Because wallpaper adds personality to your home
like no other decor element. There is more to choosing a wall covering than the colour and design. Most importantly, you need to consider and choose the type that works best for the intended area. The cheapest patterned wallpapers you can buy are very vulnerable to stains and physical damage. So, when choosing always check the characteristics of the covering.
Wallpaper Know How:Vinyl Coated:Generally, a pattern is printed on to a thin layer of vinyl with a paper backing. These wallpapers are classified as scrub able and strippable, and are suitable in most areas. These papers are better resistant to grease and moisture than plain paper.
Vinyl:Vinyl wallpaper is tougher than vinyl coated papers as the vinyl on the front of the paper is thicker. Vinyl wall coverings are tough, washable and suitable to use in areas like kitchens.
Washable:Not to be confused with vinyl's. Washable wallpapers have a thin layer of transparent coating covering the patters printed but the base is pulp paper.

Anaglypta:This is actually a trade name but seems to have become the generic name for plain embossed papers that can also be painted in the colour of your choice.
Grass Cloth:These wall coverings are actually made from weaves of grasses so has wonderful texture. But as a natural product, variations are inherent and you will always see the joins.
Flocks:Probably the oldest type of wall covering, where the pattern consists of fibres which feel and look a bit like velvet. Due to their tactical quality, people love to reach out and touch them so they can get easily marked. They also need to be installed with great care as the adhesive will most certainly leave a mark.
Metallic & Foils:They have a large percentage of metal on the surface. These papers can react to the alkalinity in the walls which is very difficult to detect. Great care therefore must be taken when preparing the walls and doing the installation. If you are using these papers, lining paper is a must.
Lining Paper:This is not finishing paper but is often used for the following two main reasons:1. To cover imperfections on a surface to be prepared
(wallpaper does not hide all imperfections).2. In the case of walls being without imperfections you
can also choose to paint the wall a similar colour to the wallpaper background.
Hot Tip: Always check the information and symbol in the wallpaper sample book and on the product labels in the roll of wallpaper!
Are my Walls ready for Wallpaper? A successful application depends on three things - Preparation, preparation, preparation! Walls need to be as smooth as possible, painted with a single colour primer and PVA, and free of mould or dampness. It's always a good idea to choose a PVA in a similar colour to the paper so joins are less noticeable.
Next Month:Do you have left over wallpaper from all your decorating jobs? Let us help you add a little colour to your home with a few bright ideas!

Paint Effect - RUST
Paint Ideas
Rusted Statue Transform a new moulded cement statue by combining oxide powders with Plascon Wall & All to create a rusted, antique-looking finish. For added inspiration and authenticity, study objects that have rusted naturally in the elements before attempting to reproduce the effect.
By Karen Schaefer Louw • www.interior-decor-design.co.za
TIP: Mix 1 (Brown mix): Use a Fitch to mix the brown powders 3:1:1 with the red powders and fine play-pit sand in a container. Add to the Wall & All Underground to form a thick paste. Mix 2 (Yellow mix): Use a Fitch to mix the yellow oxide powders 3:1 with the red powders in a container and add to Wall & All Beeswax Candle until double cream thickness is reached.
Materials• A cement statue• Plascon Wall & All: Underground (01-E1-1)• Plascon Wall & All: Beeswax Candle (Y1-B1-1)• Brown, red and yellow oxide powders• 3 mixing fitches• 2 mixing containers• Fine play-pit sand• A 50mm Laying-on brush
Method
Step 1Prepare the surface of the statue with one coat of Wall & All Underground, and leave it to dry. In your first container, use a mixing Fitch to combine three parts brown oxide powder, one part red oxide powder, and one part fine sand.
Combine this mixture with Wall & All Underground to form a thick paste. (We’ll refer to this as the brown mix.)
In the second container, use a Fitch to mix three parts yellow oxide powder to one part red oxide powder. Add Wall & All Beeswax Candle to the powders, until the mixture attains the thickness of double cream. (This is the yellow mix.)
Step 2Use the 50 mm brush to stipple the brown mix onto the prepared surface of the statue. Apply the mixture thickly in areas, and add extra texture by sprinkling on some brown oxide powder and stippling with the brush to achieve a ‘prickly texture’. Use the yellow mix to add lighter patches. Allow both colours to set. Use a clean Fitch to re-stipple the surface, creating a finish that is quite lumpy in places.
Step 3Using a smaller Fitch, paint lighter yellow areas into the crevices of the moulded details. Stipple and wipe off the raised areas with a damp cloth. For an even greater aged effect, first dip your brush into water and then press it into the crevasses to allow the paint to run down the surface. Allow it to dry.

Dean MartinSunday, 12th July is definitely a date that Dean Martin will not forget very soon. This is the day that Dean walked away with top honours at the Limpopo Open played at Koro Creek Golf Club. With a big field of 120 players, Dean had his work cut out for him. After an opening round of 68, Dean was tied with the lead with another Dainfern member Matthew Spacey. Dean followed up his first round with another 68 and went into the final round with a one shot lead. Leading by just one shot from Matthew, Dean kept his nerves and turned with a 34 for his front nine and kept his lead by one playing the last 9 holes. Matthew didn’t have the best of starts and Dean soon opened up a 3 shot lead going into the last two holes. With a 3 putt on the 17th hole his lead was reduced to only two shot playing the par 5 18th hole. “Matthew had a long putt for eagle on the 18th and the only thing I can think of is what happened at our Club Champs this year where he eagled the last hole to force a play-off”Matthew made his long eagle putt and Dean had 4 foot left for his birdie and for his maiden win. Dean kept his cool and made his birdie to finish on 10 under par, 1 shot ahead of Matthew. We would like to congratulate both players for keeping Dainfern’s name high and great to the top honours went to them. All 5 members from Dainfern made the cut, the other players where: Keegan Steyn (tied 39th), Gareth Sargent (44th), Shaun Berstein(tied 53rd)Dean improved his ranking to number 56th in the Men’s Open Amateur rankings after starting the year outside the top 150. Matthew is currently ranked 3rd on the SAGA men’s Open Amateur Rankings.

Looking for some interesting races to inspire you?The South African road and trail running circuits are renowned for being packed with frequent, varied and interesting races. Some of the highlights of the year for our members are the Two Oceans and Comrades ultramarathons, which we have previously featured in this publication.
If you are starting to plan your race calendar for the coming year, here are some others you may want to consider.
The Big Five Marathon takes place toward the end of June in t he scenic Entabeni Game Reserve. It is rated as one of Forbe’s top 10 Races Worth Travelling For. Offering a 42,2km and a 21,1km option, there is ample opportunity to take in the splendor of the bushveld.
The Knysna Forest Marathon, true to its name, takes place is the beautiful and historic Knysna Forest. It is usually held in mid-July each year and there is also a full and a half-marathon option. To top it off, the race coincides with the Knysna Oyster Festival.
For a unique opportunity to run amongst the game of the Kruger National Park, the Skukuza Half Marathon, run in early August, is your ticket. Only a small field is able to run every year due to the lottery entry system, but entries can be also be gained by donating a fee to wildlife conservation.
All three of these races are highly sought after and if you are interested you should enter as soon as possible. They each have a website so keep an eye out online for when the 2016 entries open.
Health & Wellness
Not uncommon to many other life-changing inventions, Acoustic Wave Therapy for the treatment of cellulite and skin tightening was discovered by accident. It was during a treatment process for female athletes that the improvements in cellulite appearance were discoveredA number of female athletes were undergoing treatment for torn and strained hamstrings with Acoustic Wave Therapy and despite the original complaint being successfully resolved the patients kept returning for further treatment, it was during these follow up sessions that it was revealed to the practitioner that they were noticing a remarkable improvement in the appearance of cellulite and skin tightening
Through continued extensive research it was discovered that the technology could also provide excellent results in pain management for calcifications and soft tissue issues, such as: Shoulder pain, Tennis or Golfers Elbow, Patellar Tendonitis (jumpers knee), Shin pain / Tibial Stress Syndrome, Achilles tendon pain, Heel pain (Heel Spurs), Chronic neck, shoulder and back pain and muscle tension caused by painful muscular nodules (trigger points).
Unlike many cosmetic treatments, AWT does not destroy any tissue, but allows the body’s natural healing process to accelerate the recovery from the multi-fold problems that are the contributing factors of Cellulite. Some clinics in the USA are reporting an impressive 98% success rate, with results lasting six to twelve months before limited maintenance sessions are required. Acoustic Wave Therapy is equally effective on Scar tissue and Stretch Marks. International music Celebrity Madonna was so impressed with the treatment results that she purchased her own treatment equipment. Come and experience this amazing non-invasive technology in the ambience of our calming, relaxing and healing Africology Urban Spa Environment.

Tennis Update
Is Serving a Weapon
Armstrong Tennis Academy (Pty) Ltd • Duane Armstrong • 082 456 5441 Professional Tennis Coaching from Beginners to Top
National Players
Serving is the stroke most players hate to practice, it’s boring, difficult and without a doubt the most complex stroke in tennis. As a child, my coach made us hit 200 serves every day and we ducked and dived to get away from it like naughty kids. It is so much more fun hitting balls and playing points. All he said is that if
NOT FOR SALE TO PERSONS UNDER THE AGE OF 18. ENJOY RESPONSIBLY.
we want to win we need to serve 200 serves per day, and if we don’t we must not cry if we lose.
Many players see the serve as a means to start the point and get into the match. Others see it as a means to win and to dominate. The serve is the most important stroke in tennis and if you can keep all your serves you have won half the match. All you need to do is to break your opponent once in each set and the match is yours. It seems simple, but takes years of training your serve.
If we look at Wimbledon these last two weeks and how the big servers impressed us, the competitors fear them. The big servers might not have the best games or be the most consistent but they keep winning. Have a pressure serve opposed to huge power is also a weapon. Power is not everything as long as you apply huge pressure. Get high percentages in, move the ball and vary the spin and pace. As I said the serve is very complexed.
Let us look at how brilliantly Anderson did in Wimbledon and was 2 sets to 0 up on the number one in the world. Not many players can do that and our own fellow countryman achieved it. Anderson has one of the best serves in the game today and he makes it incredibly hard for his opponent, including Djokovic to break his serve. Losing in the 5th set to Djokovic and had a chance to beat him, how amazing.
I played in the ITF senior’s tournament in Durban a few years ago, and the tournament referee was close to my court for a few matches. I did not recognise him at first until he came to greet me. It was Mr Borsboom that I knew from childhood. His son Eddie is a pro coach working with professional players. Mr Borsboom congratulated me on an amazing pressure serve and is impressed how I vary my speed, spin and placement. He was watching all my matches and truly enjoyed watching me compete. That meant a lot to me since his son was one of my junior rivals and I have great respect for Mr Borsboom. That made my day.
The irony is that the better your serve is getting the more you like to serve and enjoy the challenge. It’s just to get to the level where you believe in your serve and can win with your serve.
At an early age the serve is not a weapon and therefore gets neglected, don’t fall for that trap. Train your serve and master the most difficult stroke. Let your competitors fear your serve and keep winning.
Happy training your weapon.

Flavoured Water Recipe
How to make tasty and healthy Flavoured WaterSay goodbye to soda, juice, and bottled water with these refreshing, healthy flavours! Keeping 2-3 flavours of this "spa water" in the fridge may motivate you to drink more water.
Enjoy a variety of cold drinks, without worrying about any nasty ingredients. These are so easy and tasty and your whole family will love them.
These aren't sweet waters, so they'll be disappointing if that's what you're expecting. This is water with subtle flavours infused into it. Many spas serve fancy waters like these, and it turns out that they couldn't be simpler to make. And, they are oh-so-refreshing.
You will need:1 litre bottle of sparkling water or still waterHerbs, Fruit, Essential Oil – according to taste
Flavour Ideas:Leaves of lemon geranium / grass, lemons cut into chunks, including the rind,
1 whole vanilla pod – great way to use pods, once you have scraped out the seeds,
Leaves of rose geranium, with a single drop of rose essential oil,
1 drop mandarin oil, with a whole orange cut into chunks, including the rind,
1 drop peppermint essential oil, with a sprig of garden mint,
1 stick of cinnamon and 1-2 cloves, with apples cut into cubes.
How to make:Use water as your base and select one or more of the flavour ideas above and let them infuse overnight in the fridge. (As easy as that).

Nature Trail UpdateAs usual the Dainfern Nature Association and Turfnet have been busy. The proceeds from the In Focus magazine has allowed us to continue enhancing and maintaining our estate for the last 13 years. Here is an update of what we have been up to.
A big clean up of the reeds took place recently in Saw-grass. Our Nature guys started pulling out weeds, but due to the time spent on cutting of the reeds we had to move to our other Nature Area’s in order not to get behind. The Wooden Barge which is used to clean out the reeds from the Dams has been broken for a while, so Gary Whitford kindly sourced 4 empty Oil Barrels so that we could get the barrage mended. A BIG THANK YOU TO GARY FOR GOING OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP OUT. The Barge is presently been mended and should be back on the Saw Grass Dams soon.
Dead reeds have been cleared out at the 6th Dam and the Area’s around the small Dams have been cleaned up, and invasive Privets cut and poisoned off. Particular care
has been taken around the Dam Areas, keeping in mind the sensitivity to birds and ducks. The Grass was cut but not too low so that there would be enough coverage for small creatures. These Areas are all looking good and are now just waiting for the first Summer Rains, which is still a little way off.
Whilst in the same Area, there is a lot of Kikuyu invasive grass in the top end of Rocky Ridge, behind the 6th Hole. We are looking to kill off the Kikuyu so that we can remove the dead grass and plant Natural Grass, which would look much better and stop the grass invasion.
The 16th Bank has been cleaned up, and more Aloes have been planted in between the Cotyledons which were planted a couple of months back when we layered the Mulch down the path. Irrigation is in the process of been
by OLIVIA DENNY (landscaper for the Dainfern nature Association)
June 2015: 1 & 2: No 16 berm (Cleaned up, watered, applied mulch to the pathway) / 3: Repaired irrigation in Hampstead, Hertford, Riverwood, Sherwood, Woodlands entrance and Gateside Avenue. / 4 & 5: Cleaned up and replanted Nature walks in Willowgrove, Woodlands Villages. / 6 & 7: Installing irrigation into Highgate to supply park and dams from the river pump. / 8, 9 & 10: Riverwood river frontage being cut and maintained. / 11 - 14: Trent stream cut back reeds and cleaned up. / 15: Carmel entrance – Replanted entrance and planted annual colour.

installed, and so once and for all with good watering, the trees should grow really well in the future. The Bank is coming along really well considering we have taken slips of things from around the Estate.
The reeds have been cleaned out of Trent Dam, again leaving some reeds behind for bird and duck coverage. If anyone noticed the team working in the Dam area, one would have noticed, the huge amount of work that this involves, cutting the reeds, moving them to the bank and then having to have them removed out of the area by tractor. This takes time and energy, and we need to give the guys some praise for this hard and tedious work. On behalf of us all, thank you to the Nature Team, on a job well done.
Whilst we were in the Trent Area, The Nature Team, cleaned up the bed around the Bench and replanted and upgraded the flower bed which was looking a bit sad. The paths have been swept and the leaves raked. We have also upgraded the Beds at the back of the lst Hole, and are looking much better. We just have to sit on the watering of
these beds, until it is possible to get water into this area as well, and that is on the cards.
The grass at Olive walk has been cut and the paths are now clean.
Aloes and some grasses are on order, and will be planted, in the New Triangle at the 9th hole .We are still waiting to catch up on the Trails and for the weather to warm up a bit, but the preparation of the bed should commence soon.
Whilst in that area, we are hoping to put irrigation into the Liverage Bank, at Willowgrove also at the 9th T, then we can spruce up the bank again, once we have water.
Two new Paths along Poplar Marsh have been laid, one joining up with the Glades Road and the other path joining up with Galloway Village, and is looking a lot neater. Some work is still to be done in that area in the next few weeks.
Butterfly Walk needs some attention. There has been no water in that area for a month or two. The new connections should take place shortly which will put us back on track. We will then rehabilitate the beds, where necessary and put fresh compost down and fertilize the lawns. Aloes and Red Hot Pokers are in flower, which are attracting sunbirds and is lovely to see.
July 2015: 1 & 2: Olive Walk – Cut back and cleaned entire area including pathway / 3 & 4: Rocky ridge – Cut back an cleaned entire area including pathway. / 5 & 6: Hole No 6 – Cut back and cleaned up area including dams / 7: Cleaned entire perimeter fence / 8 & 9: Hole no 1 – Replanted flower beds behind green and cleaned up rocks and pathway. / 10: Planted up new flower beds along Trent stream. / 11: Stand number 1084 requested permission to get his trees removed because they are damaging his wall and paving. / 12: Stand number 853 requested permission to remove conifer tree. / During June [13 & 14] the Dainfern compost site was cleared up / 14: Stand number 1547. We cut down the tree and removed dirt.

Bush Baby along the Stein City Pipe Line, is now also in need of a huge clean up. We envisage our guys going into that area, as soon as they have caught up with Saw Grass.
Maintenance, have painted the Nature Signs and others, which were in need of some attention, so thank you Tony for that.
The small Wooden Bridge at the 4th Hole Dam has been repaired and also the small bridge along Willow stream to Poplar Marsh has also been repaired and painted.
Irrigation has been installed up into the Highgate Dam
Area. In the future; upgrades can at least then be watered. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DAM WATER AND IRRIGATION WATER IS NOT MUNICIPALITY WATER - it is from the Jukskei river and is not fit for human consumption. It is advised not to touch this water or allow your dogs to drink and bathe.
Finally, we would like to create a new Landscaped Marsh Wetland Area, to the left of the 7th Fairway, where the huge pile of Sand was. This is the perfect time to get this job done, so we will keep you updated on this new project.

Plants for birdsGardening
Life is a garden filled with a healthy population of permanent and visiting bird species, so why not entice these lovely creatures into your garden this summer by planting the plants they love?
A garden without birds is unthinkable; their song, constant comings and goings, feeding patterns, and most important of all their activities as a genuinely organic pest control brigade make their presence an essential part of a garden's life.
It is not that difficult to increase the number of birds that reside in or visit your garden. The first step is to grow the plants that provide sustenance in the form of food, shelter and nesting sites. The second is not to kill the insects in your garden. South African farmers who are now using softer chemicals on their crops are finding that the birds are coming back in great numbers into their orchards, vineyards and fields.
The following is a short list of indigenous plants that will ensure there is bird life in your garden:
Aloe species (above left)The flower spikes of aloes are loved by sunbirds. These succulent plants should be planted in sun in well composted soil.
Buddleja auriculata (weeping sage)(4m x4m) Placed in the sun, this plant's beautiful deep green glossy foliage perfectly offsets the spikes of sweetly scented cream, orange or lilac flowers. The weeping habit makes it a most attractive shrub. Whilst providing food for nectar loving birds it also provides good nesting sites.
Bauhinia galpinii (pride-of-De-Kaap)(3m x4m) Evergreen with bright green leathery leaves and bright orange flowers, this shrub is not fussy about soil but does much better if planted with plenty of compost. Occurring in woodlands, it is a natural for nesting sites and nectar feeding birds.
Carissa macrocarpa (big num-num) (above centre)(3m x 2m) Fast growing and perfect for coastal conditions, this plant has green foliage and star-shaped, scented
white flowers. The large red fruits are rich in vitamin C and much loved by fruit-eating birds.
Cassinopsis ilicifolia (orange thorn)(4m x 4m) This is another shrub that the fruit-eating birds enjoy. It is a thorny, scrambling shrub that has a moderate growth rate. It thrives in light shade under trees and has attractive glossy foliage and bright orange fruit.
Halleria lucida (tree-fuchsia) (above right)(4m x 2m) This plant forms a shrubby tree with bright green leaves and red/orange flowers that grow directly on the branches. The flowers are full of nectar which draws many insects, sunbirds, white eyes and weavers. Later the berries which are black, sticky and sweet are irresistible to the fruit eating birds.
Orthosiphon labiatus (pink sage)(1.5 m x1.5m) This is a fast growing shrub with soft, hairy leaves and pale pink-mauve flowers. It is suitable for use as a ground cover in the shade. Bees and many other insects enjoy the nectar which in turn delights the insect eating birds.
Plectranthus verticillatus (gossip plant)(10cm x 50cm) A fast growing ground cover with dark green and maroon foliage and white purple marked flowers, it does very well in the shade. Most Plectranthus species are host plants to an amazing number of butterfly larvae which are relished by many birds.
Tecoma capensis (Cape honeysuckle)(1.5m x 2.5m) This sprawling shrub is a fast grower with tubular shaped flowers that range in colour from yellow to salmon to orange. Not fussy about soil, it makes a good hedge plant as it is quite happy to be clipped. This plant should be placed in a sunny spot. The showy flowers are sought out by the nectar-eating birds.

Why Eat Organic
Organic Food
Organic food was the only option for thousands of years. Now, with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and genetically-modified foods, organic is still the best option. Here are some reasons to eat organic food:
1. Genetically-modified foods were unleashed on the environment and the public without prior testing to determine their safety.
2. More and more research is coming in about the health threat of genetically-modified food. The results range from intestinal damage, allergies, liver or pancreatic problems, testicular cellular changes, tumours, and even death in the experimental animals.. Eating third-party certified organic foods or those that are guaranteed to be grown from organic seed helps protect you from the health consequences of GMOs.
3. Fruits and vegetables - Eighteen percent of all genetically-modified seeds (and therefore foods that grow from them) are engineered to produce their own pesticides. Research shows that these seeds continue producing pesticides inside your body once you’ve eaten the food grown from them!
4. Toxins are damaging to brain and nerve cells. A commonly-used class of pesticides called
organophosphates was originally developed as a toxic nerve agent during World War I. When there was no longer a need for them in warfare, industry adapted them to kill pests on foods. Many pesticides are still considered neurotoxins.
5. Children’s growing brains and bodies are far more susceptible to toxins than adults. Choosing organic, helps feed their bodies without the exposure to pesticides and genetically-modified organisms, both of which have a relatively short history of use (and therefore safety).
6. In study after study, research from independent organizations consistently shows organic food is higher in nutrients than traditional foods. Research shows that organic produce is higher in vitamin C, antioxidants, and the minerals calcium, iron, chromium, and magnesium. (For more information, check out The Life Force Diet).

DNA Feedback
Capture of DikkopSean (from Turfnet) and Beatrix were able to catch this Dikkop (see picture) and cut the twine off it’s legs. Poor little bird, the twine was so tight that it had become embedded in its legs and the one was actually bleeding. Thank you both.
Well done Beatrix for your commitment to nature and your caring action!

Marsh OwlAsio capensis
By André Marx
Bird of the Month
A stealthy resident bird species that often goes unnoticed – that’s the Marsh Owl. This species is able to exist in urban areas as long as there are greenbelts and areas with marshland and damp grassland, which thankfully Dainfern Estate still manages to provide, although it is a habitat biome that is very threatened in developed areas.
Like most owls the Marsh Owl is mostly brown with a lighter buff face and dark brown eye sockets with the eyes also being dark brown. It is a medium sized owl, slightly larger in size than the Western Barn Owl that many people may be more familiar with. Unlike the W. Barn Owl and the Grass Owl this species does not show a two tone appearance with an all-white face and pale underparts with darker upperparts. Rather, it is more uniformly coloured than the aforementioned two birds and also has small ‘ear’ tufts that are only really visible from close range. If you come across an owl sitting on a dirt road at night rather than on a fencepost it will probably be this species you are seeing.
As a nocturnal species the Marsh Owl is mainly seen at night, becoming active at dusk, and sometimes can be seen even into the early morning well after sunrise. It
makes a harsh ‘quarrk-quarrk-quarrk’ sound when out and about, often circling about after being flushed.
This bird will feed mainly on small rodents but will also take insects, other small mammals as well as birds. As such it is a useful bird to have around considering we have a rat problem in some parts of the estate. But it is also vulnerable to the effects of rat poisoning and residents should be aware of this.
If you are out walking in the estate in an area of grassland near a stream or river in the estate in the early evening and you see an owl flying in circles above you chances are it will be this species. We trust that wetland and grassland habitats in neighbouring estates will continue to be preserved so that birds like the Marsh Owl will persevere and continue to delight us.
