WORLD MUSIC FILMS ON TOUR

After a successful WOMEX 2011 with 13 thrilling movies screened, we are happy to announce the first two being added to the World Music Films on Tour :

Dharohar (A Legacy):

In 2007 the Jaipur Virasat Foundation, which supports traditional arts and music in Rajasthan, India brought together seven folk musicians from different castes and

religions, who would never normally play together. It invited Jason Singh, a beat-boxer from Manchester and Bex Mather, a guitarist and song writer to join the

musicians. Other artists from England came out to join the band from time to time. This is the story of a unique collaboration, which transcends cultural and

religious divides, and toured India bringing its exuberant blend of traditional folk music and contemporary rhythms to rapturous audiences.

My Sweet Canary

Roza Eskenazi sang the way she lived, with passion, fire and love. This is the story of three young musicians from Greece, Turkey, and Israel, who embark on an

exciting musical journey, to tell the story of Greece's best-known and best-loved rebetiko singer for the first time on film. It’s a journey that will take them from

Istanbul to Thessaloniki and to Athens, following the musical trail she left behind. Most of all, it’s a journey into a world that has largely vanished, but whose sounds

continue to echo throughout the Mediterranean Basin. See the trailer here

HAYDN FESTSPIELE EISENSTADT

24TH INTERNATIONAL HAYDN DAYS 2012

„Haydn & Italy“ will be the big issue

of the 24th International Haydn Days in

Eisenstadt. On 6 – 16 September

2012, classical music stars from all over

the world will perform at the festival.

Italy has always been a place of longing of

the great artists. Whether painter,

musician or composer, they travelled

south. Although Haydn never travelled to

Italy, he had a strong affinity to this

country: He loved the music and spoke

perfect Italian.

The Programme of the International

Haydn Days 2012 moves Eisenstadt in the

vicinity of the great Italian music centres

such as Venice or Naples. Artistic Director

Dr. Walter Reicher has invited the most

celebrated Haydn experts to Eisenstadt:

These include the Haydn expert Adam

Fischer and his Austrian-Hungarian Haydn

Orchestra, Giovanni Antonini and Il

Giardino Armonico as Orchestra in

Residence, Mischa Maisky, Patricia

Kopatchinskaja and the Academy of

Ancient Music with Bernard Labadie, to

name just a few of the illustrious artists

and ensembles of international renown.

NEW PRODUCTIONSPREISER RECORDS

The Monks Of Stift Heiligenkreuz

NEW CD

With their choral CD Chant – Music for Paradise (US title: Chant – Music for the Soul) the Cistercian monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz, in the Vienna Woods, landed a huge hit. "All this hype was a challenge for us. After all, we want to be monks and not pop stars. But with God's help we have remained normal. Our community has by no means been weakened by the success, but rather strengthened!" declares Father Karl Wallner, the abbey's press spokesman.

For the monks, Gregorian chant is "sung prayer", and as such it should not become a plaything for commercial interests. For this reason they came up with the idea of creating their own music label. They called their new label "Obsculta Music", a reference to the first words of the Rule of St. Benedict: "Obsculta, o fili!", Latin for "Listen, my son!"

The monastery chose the venerable Viennese label Preiser Records, a company that has enjoyed an outstanding reputation both in Austria and abroad for decades.

"We are very conscious of the importance this new CD has for the monks. The monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz are burning with enthusiasm to spread the beauty of their spirituality out into the world. We are committed to handling Chant - Amor et Passio completely in accordance with the wishes of the Heiligenkreuz monks, and we consult them about all activities related to this production," explains Martin Pusch, Preiser Records.

Kurt Weill reloaded

A film by Theo Roos

ZDF/3sat 3 December 2011, 8:15 p.m.

The life and the art of Kurt Weill just continues to fascinate, even more than half a century after his death. His music mirrors the various artistic, moral and political contradictions of his time and generation.

In Weill’s lifetime his work was most associated with the voice of his wife Lotte Lenya. The “wild” relationship, a succession of deep friendship, separation, marriage and new beginnings, influenced his life and his work. Lotte was the pervasive, propelling energy behind him. And she will be the main person, the narrator, in the documentary by Theo Roos about Kurt Weill.

In an extraordinary, unconventional way, Lotte Lenya will show us the journey through the life of this unconventional composer: his way as a leader of the German avantgarde just to his success as American composer of musical theatre on Broadway.

Andreas Vollenweider – Meister des sanften

Widerstands (Documentary)With his signature blend of world music, jazz and classical music, Swiss

harp player Andreas Vollenweider achieved the inconceivable, a

successful career with an instrument that seemed simply too exotic for

the music industry. In fact, Vollenweider sold over 10 million albums

worldwide, won a Grammy Award and two Grammy nominations,

Since he first picked up the harp in the mid 1970s, Vollenweider has

helped to define the term «world music» collaborating with a wide

range of key figures in the scene, such as Bobby McFerrin, Milton

Nascimento, Abdullah Ibrahim or Luciano Pavarotti, to name but a few.

The documentary Meister des sanften Widerstands will be the first full-

musical voyage and exceptional career that has often taken him beyond

music, right into philosophy and political non-violent activism. The film

RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

From 2011 to 2013, Clasart Classic is recording a series of

concerts of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the

direction of Mariss Jansons. In a survey by the trade journal

Opernwelt, fifty international music critics voted Mariss Jansons

the “Conductor of the Year 2011.” But not only the ensemble’s

principal conductor was honored: the British periodical

Gramophone hailed the BR Symphony Orchestra as one of the

world’s best orchestras. The BR Symphony Orchestra is thus the

sole radio orchestra in the world to make it into this top-ten list.

The main focus of the media cooperation with the Bavarian Radio

is on the recording of a Beethoven cycle in Tokyo’s Suntory Hall.

As part of a Japan tour, the orchestra is performing all nine

Symphonies there in November/December 2012. The recording

will be made in conjunction with the NHK. The special Beethoven

focus will be supplemented by Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3

performed by pianist Mitsuko Uchida.

Further recordings reflect the ensemble’s busy tour

agenda: In addition to the concerts from Suntory Hall

and the Munich Gasteig, the orchestra will also be

performing in Salzburg, Lucerne and Vienna.

Crowning the cooperation: a live recording of Verdi’s

Requiem from the Golden Hall of the Vienna
